Any pointers appreciated!
Quote: tuppHere is a guide to some non-Greyhound buses.
I'll probably try the American Lion or Tufesa services for $20-$25 each way -- they might have WiFi.
There are others buses, but these were the cheapest I have found.
Thanks. I was hoping for some trip with bennies, like coupons for food or whatever. Often you get that sort of thing out of tour buses, especially from asian carriers/operators.

Megabus. I am shooting their commercial this Saturday. Some of my viewers called me and told me about it and they were attracted to the price and the four trips per day.

I'm planning to use Megabus on my next trip up to Vegas contingent on two elements: I can convince the rest of my party not to bring a dozen suitcases for an overnight trip and they won't get knifed on a public bus. (Hyperbole, but...)
If you plan on carrying more than one bag or checking more than one bag, buy two tickets -- they only allow one carry-on and one checked bag (no heavier than 50lbs).
I bought two tickets each way, as I was carrying extra camera and lighting gear for a Vegas shoot. Each ticket was $8, so the total for each leg was $16.50 (two $8 tickets each, plus a single 50-cent booking fee).
I'm told its a snap to qualify for a buffet there (perhaps more difficult to eat it) and most of the bus programs give you a buffet coupon that is in Spanish.

When traffic is good, this will be a very serious competitor for the Las Vegas Railway Express which is going to have a five and a half hour ride from Fullterton (no stop in downtown LA) and will have a more limited schedule. But you wouldn't want to take Megabus or drive during holiday travel periods or "holiday rush hours."
I like the idea of the midnight trips when there is less risk of severe traffic jams even during holiday weekends.
Quote: FleaStiffI know you are a "pitchman" but do your videos really have to open up on such a high volume setting?
Explain this to me please. Our videos are hosted on YouTube and we don't control their playback. This is the first I ever heard about a "high volume" setting. We upload to YouTube using the same volume settings for broadcast TV. If you can give me some more info, I will try to find out. Thanks.

I read the article and I am interested. However, do they offer $1 fares?
I tested their site over the course of two weeks and found I could book trips less than two days away at $10 and $12 with one night in Vegas and never more than that.
24 hours of parking in the underground garage at the bus/train station in downtown LA is $7. I figure that puts an over night trip to Vegas at $31. It costs me way more than $31 in gas for one way and does not include wear and tear on the car and would allow me to sleep since I'd be up all night.
The bus scheduled trip is 5 hours which is about the same time if I drove myself considering I would make a rest stop at least once.
As long as I wasn't traveling during a peak travel time, this is a viable option. But when there is a traffic jam on the 15, the bus will be sitting just like all of the cars.
Which are believed to be rather high. Certainly when I played this using FireFox it seemed so loud I instantly hit mute.Quote: AlanMendelsonWe upload to YouTube using the same volume settings for broadcast TV.
I imagine travel by bus would have some advantages but it seems strange to associate such low class transport with a fun vacation.
I think the bus company is in a cream skimming situation. It takes only a few timeslots and tries to fill them up completely.
The Megabus low fares will occasionally attract "interesting" passengers, but the "class" notion is all in your head. I know that the "red-eye" trips are quiet, clean, convenient and comfortable ways to go back and forth between L.A. and Vegas.Quote: FleaStiffI imagine travel by bus would have some advantages but it seems strange to associate such low class transport with a fun vacation.
I think that the Megabus has four daily trips both ways between L.A. and Vegas, and the red-eye had lots of space.Quote:I think the bus company is in a cream skimming situation. It takes only a few timeslots and tries to fill them up completely.
The other cheap option is mid week flights on Spirit, when you buy your ticket in advance at the airport to avoid the $17 "passenger usage fee". Even with the garbage fees Spirit charges, you can get as low as $18 one way flying midweek, without any need to sign up for the "$9 fare club". Of course, you have to make two trips to the airport - one to book the ticket, and then to fly, since those tickets are not going to available on the date of the flight.
