What time is it? 3am or something? I don't think I will make a special trip. I stayed a couple nights at Clarion during one of my Vegas trips before I relocated. There was a free night or a 2 for 1 coupon in ACG. If it was some casino property that I had some real connection to, like I played there a lot, I might make the effort. Clarion isn't that big. Like 8 or 10 floors right? I don't think it will be that spectacular.
I'm as much a fan of blowing up stuff as the next guy, but you know the Clarion (formerly the Greek Isles, and the Debbie Reynolds, and the Royal Americana, and the Paddlewheel) has (soon to be had) about 200 rooms, and is smaller than most Strip parking garages. Maybe I'm just spoiled in the destructive pyrotechnics as a spectator sport department. Probably so.Quote: djatcAnyone going to the implosion of clarion tomorrow night? Is it worth the hassle?
Please call me when they finally get around to improving the rancid dump & pimp hostel with the psychotic clown theme (and upgrading the whole neighborhood) by making THAT into a hole in the ground.

Don't forget when Vince McMahon wanted to make it a WWF casino.
I used to pop in that place occasionally when it was the Royal. They had a few goodies occasionally.Quote: BozDon't forget when Vince McMahon wanted to make it a WWF casino.
I wanted WWF casino to happen, it could've been fun, if they set it up as I imagine it.

Probably would have went over as well as his WWF restaurant in Times Square (it was at the current location of the Hard Rock Cafe, back when HRC was up just south of Central Park)

To give Vince credit, the All Star Cafe and Race Rock didn't exactly set the world on fire either.
Quote: kewljOn the local news, they had reaction from Debbie Reynolds, who is upset the building is being imploded. I have never heard of the Debbie Reynolds Hollywood hotel and casino am sure I am showing my younger age here, but I had no idea who Debbie Reynolds is or was. Never heard of her. I looked her up and I guess she was an singer/actress. Actually it looks like she is still acting. The pictures I saw didn't look familiar to me at all. So, I still don't really know who she is or was famous for.
Ok, really, you have to watch "the Unsinkable Molly Brown" followed shortly by "Singin In the Rain". (In that order, because there is no musical better than SITR, but Molly Brown will disappoint overall if you don't see it first.) She's the female lead in both of those, very funny, great singing, pretty good dancing. I don't think there's anything else that's must-see of hers, though the experts might pick out a few more, but she made at least 50 movies.
She's known for 2 other things. She was the wife Eddie Fisher dumped when he ran off with Elizabeth Taylor (all 3 of them huge stars at the time). Probably THE gossip rag scandal of the 50's.
She's the mother of Carrie Fisher, Princess Leia of Star Wars fame. Carrie blames all of her many substance abuse and mental issues in large part on Debbie, has written books about it. Who knows.
wiki the rest if you're interested, but she has what is reportedly the largest private collection of real movie props/costumes/memorabilia in the world. She's done a lot of work towards charities for movies, movie oldfolks, animals, mental health, all kinds of stuff. She's losing it now in her 80's but was a girl-next-door who became a great Dame for decades, mostly behind the scenes.

What I do know is the business history: that she went busto on this joint like everyone else who ever had anything to do with it. Actual "Chapter 11" total liquidation type personal bankruptcy. Maybe what she was upset about was to be reminded of it again?
NY Times blurb on her bust-out.

At least they opened. Magician David Copperfield's best act was to make millions of dollars disappear without ever even opening his planned Times Square restaurant.

The most important fact about Debbie Reynolds is that she is Princess Leia's mom :).

Face palm. Had me have to think about that one for a second.
