I just bought an impromptu plane ticket to Vegas. Prices finally dropped. Yay.
However, I was planning on staying downtown this trip... so that leaves me with a precarious situation. Do you think this strike would affect my trip in an adverse way? I say adverse, because crossing a picket line is something I greatly enjoy doing. I ask this because I hope that some of you old timers can remember one of these... It's the Culinary Union 226 which includes "cooks, cleaners, bartenders, cocktail waitresses, porters, and others".
I see that Nevada is a Right to Work state, so my guess is that service will just be slow and possibly subpar because of the temps?

The last time this union went strike on it lasted
6 /12 years.. Soooooo...

Anyone know what is the timeframe for picket lines to start forming downtown at other properties?
Not sure about the downtown Grand, but remember, Nevada is a Right to Work state so there is no compulsory union membership for these employees. I'm not sure how Canada handles these matters, but I have to believe it's more liberal than the US when it comes to labor issues on average. Doesn't Canada even have an issue with replacement workers? I remember a MLS issue some time ago.
Could a hotel run on 50% of its employees from this union plus temps? Probably. 20% plus temps? Probably not. I'm staying at MSS in a couple of weekends so hopefully I won't find out.
They pay housekeepers more than Union wages. What about bartenders and line cooks?

Ya but if casino x is offering 2:1 blackjack I'd trample over chef boyardee and guy fiero
- Golden Nugget agreed to a 5 year deal, only casino to "deal" so far
- Picketing last Saturday to draw attention to the matter. From the way it's written it sounds like they aren't actively striking, just trying to intimidate... so far.
If anyone has better information, I would appreciate it.

Correction: GN is the only DOWNTOWN casino to deal so far. Other casinos that were having issues already have.

I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Why? I wouldn't give it a second thought either. Should I just automatically assume that because some employees are upset about something, they are automatically in the right?
I am not a union guy, have never been a union guy, and don't particularly concern myself with unions.
If I had a trip booked and was staying at a hotel that was being picketed, I would not cancel my reservation. I'd go about my business as usual.

14,999 and then 6 /12 years until 15,000 ?
Quote: TerribleTomIf I was a union guy, maybe I wouldn't. Like UPS & the Teamsters refusing to deliver to these casinos while the Culinary Union is picketing.
