I’m sorta new-ish to blackjack and know the basic rules, but I am starting to want to learn it more in detail

One question I have the crosses my mind a lot is if there is a Max number of times you should take a hit? For example: say you’re showing 12 and dealer is showing 9...you keep getting small cards so you don’t bust and maybe make it to you keep hitting and risk the bust or should you stop after a set number of cards?

Thank you.

Hi Denise and welcome.
For any combination of dealer upcard and player hand, so far, there is an absolutely optimum way to play. In it's simplest form, it's called basic strategy, and this site and sister site WizardOfVegas has all the answers.
It's not about the quantity of cards that you take, but the running total value. E.g, if your cards total 17 or more, you always stand: If your cards total less than 9, you hit.
It's all here...
https://wizardofvegas.com/guides/blackjack/

If you play decent basic strategy, the house edge is less than 1%. But fail to play Basic Strategy, you could face a house edge of 10s of percent.

I think she is asking about extreme examples. Say you have a six-card 14. Do you factor the number of cards in your hand as well as your total or do you treat a six-card 14 exactly like a three-card 14?
Suppose you hit your six card 14 and get an Ace. Do you go for another card?
The older I get, the better I recall things that never happened

I doubt she was asking anything so subtle...But I could be wrong.

Hi Denise. There are often slightly different rules casinos make re the game of BJ. Generally speaking though, as OD wrote, you keep hitting till you get to 17, if the dealer is showing a 7 through to an ace.

If the dealer is showing a 2 through 6, then you usually only hit till you get to 12.

The number of cards dealt is normally irrelevant. It’s the total value of the cards, that count.

That said, if you want to keep hitting, you can. The dealer is not gonna stop you hitting till your total card value exceeds 21. Once that happens, then you’ve busted and the dealer will take your cards and your bet.

As OD pointed out, there are blackjack charts that give the best responses to many of the different scenarios encountered in the game, and he provided a link to help with that. 👍

I was asking about extreme examples as billy mentioned. Thank you! Should you keep hitting based on the rules of my cards vs dealer regardless if I’ve already bitten like 3 times??

Some of the true experts will deride me for this, but I really suggest you ignore those edge cases until you are at least completely au-fait with the use of basic strategy. As Wellbush indicated there are a few minor variations for different rule sets, but just find the strategy card for the rules you actually encounter. Incidentally, casinos don't mind you having and referring to a printed card at the table.
If you are playing with single or double deck, your extreme cases might change your strategy a little, but with typical 6 or 8 deck games, really don't bother. You are almost in the realm of card counting and index variations, which are not beginner topics.

yes, keep hitting till you get to the total that you are not supposed to hit anymore. that total is the one pertaining to the strategy chart of BJ (the strategy chart particular to the slight rule variation of the BJ game you are playing). there is no limit to the number of hits. once you've busted though, you can't hit anymore.

I hope you left the table right after.

There may be some casinos that pay you once you've hit a certain number of cards, but I think most don't. You would need to check with the casino/s you intend playing with.
