Going to Vegas and understand (from a friend who just returned) that Freebet Blackjack at my hotel now has an optional bet which is paid based on the number of gold coins (freebets) you have. Can't find an internet info on this bet, its payoffs or whether it should/shouldn't be played. Can anyone offer advise?

Which hotel? The guy who invented the game is on here. He will probably know what you're talking about, but he tracks things by installs.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

The D and the Golden Gate Downtown have this side bet. It is called Pot of Gold. The below is the paytable used at the mentioned properties:
1 Free Bet Coin - 3:1
2 Coins - 12:1
3 Coins - 30:1
4 Coins - 50:1
5+ Coins - 100:1

I assume this is fairly standard. Any thoughts if this is a good bet. Our friends advised us the dealers were advising all players to play it.

The house edge for this pay-table is 3.6% which is reasonable for a side bet. There is another pay-table, which pays up to 1,000/1 for 7 coins, which has a higher edge of 4.97% or 5.3% depending whether the 4-coin pay-out is 60/1 or 50/1 respectively.
There is one strategy change, if you play the 'Pot of Gold', and that is you should split 5,5 rather than doubling.

What a great selection of interesting plays are actually correct strategy. This one only needs you to have 5-5 (about 1 in 176 chance). I've yet to see the illusive doubling 9A vs 6 (needs 9-9 then 9A on a free one and the dealer has to have the right upcard).Quote: Switch...you should split 5,5 rather than doubling.
