It's something that's been f#$%ing with my head . When there is an Ace upcard we will be asked for insurance and then he draws the hole card over the machine but if the upcard is 10 that doesn't happen and the hand is played out like any other. As i understand it with you Americans the norm is that the dealer should do the same thing on 10 aswell (but without offering insurance)?
Is the change in basic strategy here that i don't double on 11 vs 10 aswell as hitting pair of 8's against 10 as opposed to splitting?

Dealers DO check for a blackjack first when a ten is the upcard, and if the dealer has a blackjack, the hit and stand phase is skipped, and the dealer takes the losers and pushes any player blackjacks. Insurance is never offered on a ten-upcard blackjack. This is standard Blackjack procedure in American casinos.

Yeah that's what i thought. But if he doesn't then the difference is not to split 8's vs 10 and not to double 11 vs 10?

It all depends on whether or not you lose all bets to a dealer BJ or just the initial bet.

So i assume this is a dealbreaker where i must adapt to dealers 10 upcard being risky and play slightly more conservative?
