In New Hampshire, at the Seabrook Dog Track, they have side bets on their Black Jack table in the Poker Room. For a $1.00 bet they pay 3 to 1 for a match (6 of diamonds in player's hand matches dealers up card, like a 6 of clubs), 7 to 1 for a suited match and 20 to 1 for a pair in the player's hand matching the dealer's up card.

At first blush, these side bets don't look like they are worth the risk. The cards come out of a 6 deck (I think -- it could be 8 decks -- I didn't ask) shoe. Does it make any sense to place these wagers? What are the odds?

Thanks

Here's the Wizard's page about BJ Side Bets:

Is the bet worth it?

Here's my simple rule of thumb regarding side bets: Avoid them.

Whenever the casino offers a bet at a price lower than the table minimum, there's got to be a reason. And the reason isn't to encourage a small bet due to high payouts. It's to encourage any betting at all since they have low payouts.

By the way, this logic also applies to the "junk in the middle" at a craps table.

22% house edge for 6 decks, 20% for 8 assuming those are the only payouts and I don't have any brainos and/or typoes.
