Some would argue that a patty melt isn't a hamburger. Those that make the argument would say a hamburger has to involve a roll, not bread. Just like Salsbury steak isn't a hamburger, just cooked chopped beef.
I envision a world where the hamburger embraces all these varieties. If a burger can be served on a bed of lettuce, why not on bread. Be bold.
I've never had a Sonic patty melt but always felt their burgers had too much bun to beef. I do like their tater tots.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction is supposed to make sense.

Huge, single patties. I ordered rare, and that’s how it was served. I know, I know! Now even my steaks are at least mid-rare, and burgers are at least mid-well. My gut just can’t do what it used to do.
