While I don't officially play in Hard Mode, I typically play using the Hard Mode rules. The reason I don't put the game into Hard Mode is for cases like today. After #3 FROND, there were 4 possibilities that I could see (SOUND, WOUND, MOUND and HOUND), and only 3 guesses left. So, I popped in a probing word for #4 to see which it was.

In my mind "Hard" should mean "more mentally challenging," not "how well can you guess a random letter?"

"Dealer has 'rock'... Pay 'paper!'"

Lot of yellow. I was trying random things on guess 3, as I was pretty confident there was a Y. I was surprised it was a word.

Thump is an example of onomatopoeia. I had to look up the spelling of that one.

After CLOTH, I knew the answer was either O__T_ or ___TO, with I as the only untried vowel. I spent about two minutes trying unsuccessfully to find a word for the first pattern, but as soon as I began to consider the second, the answer popped into my head.

I spent about four minutes solving this one.

Funny story about today's word: back when I was in high school, ditto sheets were still in regular use. i can still remember the purple color and the smell, as well as the way the sheets would stick together, resulting in the occasional blank page.

in my Algebra 2 class, Mr. Rowe was distributing the dittoed test papers by moving to each column (not "row" he would insist!) of students and handing five sheets to the student at the front, who would then take one and pass the rest back. One student, upon receiving his test sheet, held it aloft and exclaimed, "Mr. Rowe, my test sheet is blank." Without missing a beat, Mr. Rowe calmly replied, "I figured YOU were going to guess at the answers anyway, so you might as well guess at the problems as well."

I wonder how many years he was sitting on that zinger, just awaiting the chance to deploy it.
