unJon,
Does wordlebot have a "hard" setting that requires all guesses be possible solutions?
I noticed today, for example, that the wordlebot suggestion for guess 2 could not possibly be the correct solution.

In other news, the Wordle editor sent an email. Somehow I’m on the email list. I think it’s a partial apologia for the blowback in the befininning of her tenure. I’ll put it under the spoiler for length reasons.
By Tracy Bennett
What does it mean to be “editor” of Wordle?
It’s a worthy question, and one that I asked myself in my first weeks as the game’s inaugural editor. Wordle Editor is a new title, and a new responsibility. The game is beautifully designed to be mostly self-sustaining, but there are times when a light human touch can steer the ship past trouble spots. Fortunately, there were some precedents to look to, in Spelling Bee and other Times games, which helped establish some guiding principles.
In the first month, I experimented with random and nonrandom methods for choosing answers, ultimately settling on a system that uses a random generator combined with some editorial organization of the word sequence through the week. In this system, I research and test each word for usage, familiarity and solvability before scheduling.
I’ve gained valuable insight by reviewing Wordler comments since The Times acquired the game in 2022. I’ve learned that Wordle lovers are a passionate community. We care about each word: how challenging it is to solve; what a word means, primarily and secondarily; whether an answer is fair and familiar, or too obscure, or too topical; and whether the solution comes down to a lucky guess or skillful deduction.
In my opinion, Josh Wardle and Palak Shah were Wordle’s true first editors. They created and curated a perfect game for today’s online puzzlers. It’s a privilege to be carrying their vision forward into 2023.
Assume your starter word was the word CRANE. Assume the feedback clues provided were a green C and a green A.
Row 1: 🟩⬜🟩⬜⬜ CRANE
Row 2:
Row 3:🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
There are 13 possible answers, based upon the original 2,315 word dataset: CHAFF, CHALK, CHAMP, CHAOS, CHASM, CLACK, CLAIM, CLAMP, CLASH, CLASP, CLASS, COACH, and COAST.
(For the sake of this problem, assume that yes, all 13 answers are possible, even though one or more of them may have been used before in prior puzzles and one or more possible words that fit might have been added to the dataset.)
Question: What's the one word that you can play next, on Row 2, that will guarantee you will be able to solve the puzzles on Row 3?

Excellent puzzle. I tried a bunch of things by hand. Gave up and tried a bunch more on a Wordle solver online.

Good work!! HOLMS is indeed correct and I believe the only word that guarantees a solution in four rows.
If the answer is CHAFF the feeback from HOLMS will be Y----
If the answer is CHALK the feeback from HOLMS will be Y-Y--
If the answer is CHAMP the feeback from HOLMS will be Y--G-
If the answer is CHAOS the feeback from HOLMS will be YY--G
If the answer is CHASM the feeback from HOLMS will be Y--YY
If the answer is CLACK the feeback from HOLMS will be --Y--
If the answer is CLAIM the feeback from HOLMS will be --YY-
If the answer is CLAMP the feeback from HOLMS will be --YG-
If the answer is CLASH the feeback from HOLMS will be Y-Y-Y
If the answer is CLASP the feeback from HOLMS will be --Y-Y
If the answer is CLASS the feeback from HOLMS will be --Y-G
If the answer is COACH the feeback from HOLMS will be YG---
If the answer is COAST the feeback from HOLMS will be -G--Y
As you can see, in each case the feedback received is unique, thus guaranteeing you will know the answer no matter what it is.
CHASM, for example, a valid possible, is a pretty good try. But let's say the feedback received from CHASM is GGGxx. The answer could be either CHAFF or CHALK. Or, let's say the feedback clues from CHASM is GxGGx. The answer could still be CLASP or CLASS.
Only HOLMS guarantees a solution in 4.

Not only did I see it, and enjoy it, I enjoyed the follow-up video, where he, because of a small bug he found in his code, he corrects his conclusion from the initial video.

After playing the opener TRACE, the feedback received indicates the R is green and the C is yellow.
T R A C E ⬜🟩⬜🟨⬜
From this feedback, there are now 11 words still possible, based upon the original 2,315 word dataset. They are CRIMP, CRISP, CRONY, CROOK, CROSS, CROUP, CROWD, CROWN, CRUMB, CRUMP, and CRUSH.
As before, for the sake of this puzzle, assume these 11 words are indeed the only words still possible. (Additional words that fit this feedback may have been added to the list, as the exact composition of the word list is not known.)
Question: Is there a word you can play in Row 2, to guarantee a solution on Row 3?
For example, the word BONUS is a pretty good try. Alas, the feedback received from BONUS might be xYYxx and if so, the answer could be either CROWN or CRONY.
MOUND is also a pretty good try. Alas, the feedback received from MOUND might be YxGxx and if so, both CRUMB and CRUMP still remain.
