I think the purest measuring stick is, "who is the fastest". Even kids know that. Therefore, the greatest athlete has to be Usain Bolt, world record holder in the 100m at 9.58 seconds.

I always wondered why winning the 100m made someone the fastest human. Why not 50m or 200m or 1km?

Fastest over 100m, maybe... but well, what about fastest over 10,000m? Or even longer distances. I'd think consideration of Haile Gebrselassie would be in order for long distance runners.

Fastest average speeds are in either the 100m or 200m. I'm not sure if there's a record for the fastest top speed a human has achieved, but it'd be pretty close to the end of one of the sprints, I suspect.

Also Bolt, something like 27mph.

I got clocked at 19mph when I was 12. Hadn't even hit puberty yet.

I coulda been a contendah.

records are broken in most sports by ones and twos or by fractions. In an age when the average defenseman scored 6 goals bobby orr scored 46.

It's not even close.
