Gordy
I've been contemplating asking if it would be possible to hang together for a bit when I come in September, but I didn't want to be pushy, or put you on the spot, whatever.
Hell YEAH! I'd love the opportunity. I'll even buy the coffee!
If need be, and if possible, I'd adjust my travel plans to fit into your schedule.
One catch on the casino visit afterward might be finding the right kind of table(s). Some of us are admitted low rollers while others are perhaps more serious gambles. Might be hard to hang in the same locale.
Yeah, and the gambling thing could get awkward with peoples' different bankrolls, etc.
Quote: WizardThanks for all the encouragement. It looks like there aren't enough people to make it a regular thing yet.
Id say you did damn well considering the post has only been up 3 hours :P
But if you wanted to get together and have coffee this weekend, I'm buying... (as the value of the free advice you've provided is pretty much priceless.
You know how to reach me...
I'd like to suggest possibly hosting a small meet and greet conference, you'd be the guest of honor.
Quote: WizardThanks for all the encouragement. It looks like there aren't enough people to make it a regular thing yet. However, I'll do my best to come down if any active members are in town. If I'm running very busy, and have no other reason to come to the Strip, I may invite you to come out my way on the west side of town.
I am interested as well.. I live in town, but do work a day job during the week :)

I think DJTeddyBear said it best with "WOW". This is above and beyond anything that I would have wished for. Having got that out now...
For many of us Las Vegas is a destination rather than a local stomping ground. It would be difficult for us to participate on a "regular" basis. However, When we are in town it would be an honor to meet "The great and powerful Odds" (that sounded corny, but was intended with all due respect to your moniker).
A regular coffee gathering for the locals would be fine, but for us out-of-town travelers a simple posting of regular appearances to which we could adjust our itineraries to accommodate a pow-wow would be more useful. This brings me to a suggestion for the forum... Please add a "Member Meet-N-Greet" topic where members can post their tentative trip dates and then based on that others can propose a meeting if they're there at the same time. I have read many posts over the last few months and thought "that person thinks the way I do, it would be nice to meet him/her". On the flip side there have been a few posts where I've thought "What kind of person thinks that way? I would be interesting to meet them and see if they are like that in person or just when they have the luxury of anonymity."

these are my thoughts exactly. obviously the wizard has a huge following who would jump to the chance of meeting him and others who have similar interest. but the difficulty would be for the out of towners who can't make these get togethers on specific dates and times. something like a 'calendar of events' to help with planning might help.
When I finally make it to Vegas, I HAVE to meet the Wizard! No clue when that'll be.

Hey Wiz, where do you hang on the west side of town? I live on the north west side and I would like to meet you sometime. I usually play at the Rampart which is close and easy for me, but I am flexible.

I can up this party by at least one if you don't mind a third wheel and want to make it a true Forum Members Meet 'n Greet? I will be flying in around 5pm on the 17th and available anytime after checking in (at Monte Carlo) until around noon on the 20th.
I'll have a car so travel will not be a problem.
Thanks.Quote: SplittingAAI think DJTeddyBear said it best with "WOW".
I couldn't think of a better way to phrase my state of mind when I first read the about the idea.
I really thought that if someone other than the Wiz had suggested it, it would have died a quick death. After all, on the main site, not long before the forum started, the Contact Me form was turned off, and the Wiz requested that no email inquiries be sent. Seemed reasonable enough. It's not hard to believe that the Wiz gets inundated with all sorts of questions and requests.
To be frank, the creation of the forum kinda surprised me initially. But I see now that with everyone talking to each other, questions can be answered without the Wiz' involvement. That seems like it could also reduce the direct questions.
It couls also achieve a separate goal of distancing himself from his fans.
Apparently, that was not the goal. Indeed, it appears to be just the opposite. The forum helps identify the fans to allow the Wiz to get to know us, and we get to know him.
And naw he wants to meet us, and allow us to meet him.
I'll say it again. WOW. I still feel that way.
I'll be coming in September. I know that's a long way off. But, I don't want my typical habit of procrastinating to cause me to miss out on my chance to meet the Wiz.
Sunday 9/19 thru Friday 9/24. My convention is 9/21 thru 9/23. I'd REALLY like to meet late on Sunday or Early on Monday. If that doesn't work, any evening Monday thru Thursday is OK.
You're right. That DOES sound corny. That's why I stick with "The Wiz". Of course every time I do, I can't help but think of the Broadway show and film featuring an all black cast. I mean, unless the Wiz uses a stand-in for the occasional photos he posts, we all know he's white....Quote: SplittingAA"The great and powerful Odds" (that sounded corny, but was intended with all due respect to your moniker).

With a wife and three kids, I don't really "hang out" anywhere. About the only place I'm seen in public on a regular basis is shooting baskets at my community basketball court, and working out at the 24-hour Fitness on Town Center Drive. I used to go to the Red Rock on a regular basis for my mailers, but they suddenly cut me off months ago. Sometimes I do the "neighborhood partner's" promotion at the Rampart. I could meet you there just about any Tuesday or Thursday morning for a cup of coffee.
Quote: DrJohnWould love to meet the man who taught me how to play Pai Gow Tiles, the greatest casino game. You've made me an anomaly: a white guy who plays dominos!! I'll be in town April 17-19 and again June 19-22. Just let me know a time and place. I owe you big time!
Thanks! I think I've taught lots of pale-faces to play pai gow tiles. When I first started playing that game I never saw white guys playing, and now I think we make up about 20%. I'm going to be in Alaska those June dates, but April looks good.

I must admit that is one reason I created a forum. Before I got swamped with direct questions by e-mail. I couldn't answer all of them, and felt badly about deleting those I didn't think worthy of a reply. It is so much easier to direct questions to the forum, and pick and choose which I want to respond to.
Quote: WizardWith a wife and three kids, I don't really "hang out" anywhere. About the only place I'm seen in public on a regular basis is shooting baskets at my community basketball court
i didn't know you like to shoot baskets. do you also get in a game if you can? i shoot baskets all the time. it's my way to relax and it also helps me to focus. do you take your kids with you? i have two daughters and started taking them to the park with me while they were still in diapers. they both ended up playing in leagues from ages 6 and 7 all the way through high school. the youngest is now on a college team. we still shoot baskets if they aren't busy. it's cool if we get in a game together. somewhere along the line they bypassed their dad and got better than me. but it was always a chance for us to stay close and talk about things, and while teaching them about the game relate it to life also.
in fact this is how i started going to vegas on a regular basis. they both went to vegas to play in those summer tournaments. i could never go on any of my oldest daughters trips and i regret missing that experience with her, especially as they usually did very well. i made it a point to go on every one of my youngest daughters trips every summer, and that's how it started. my friends who live in california would come with us and this became a yearly trip that we looked forward to.
while in vegas i always keep an eye out for a basketball court to see if anyone is playiing, but probably because of the weather everyone must be playing indoors. too bad the hotel spas don't have a court! i would definitely shoot some baskets before going to the casino. some physical exercise would be the perfect way to clear the mind and get ready to focus.
whenever i'm in town and you want to play a game of horse or need another player for a game let me know. maybe we can play for breakfast or something, but just to give you a little heads up, as i got older i've had to move my game out to the 3 point line. ;)

Do some of those cushion panels look like doors? They are. Open them and Murphy beds drop down.
I don't believe these accessories come with the room:

Cool, this is starting to sound like a definite maybe for a prime coffee time slot. I will be with some other gentlemen also and I know a couple of them would enjoy a chance to meet up with The Wiz. Especially since they were the ones that turned me on to the Wizard of Odds web site.
It seems like every time I'm at a casino I run into a novice who appreciates my advice. The last piece of advice I give him is to go to remember this name: WizardOfOdds.com
Every time I say that, I say to myself that it would be cool if I had a WizardOfOdds.com business card to hand out, and that if I ever meet the Wiz, I'd ask for a bunch.
Then it occured to me: You can get free business cards from www.vistaprints.com (They print with a small VistaPrint.com ad on the back, and you pay for shipping).
There aren't a lot of options for the free cards, but in just a few minutes, I designed these three versions:

www.djteddybear.com/images/wiz2.JPG
www.djteddybear.com/images/wiz3.JPG
They don't offer any choices for position, fonts, colors, etc. There are 45 pre-set designs. Select one, pop in the text, and that's it.
I like the first because of the money, the second because of the font, and the third because of the simplicity.
Waddaya think?
(Of course, I'd prefer nicer cards, complete with the logo and Emerald Cidy, but I ain't paying for them...)
I like 1 becuse of the money and the green background which resembles casino felt.
I like 3 as you said its simple, and says everyting you need to know.
I dont like 2 at all.
BTW: A piece of advice on business cards involving gaming is to but a basic BJ strategy table on the back. I told the Monte Carlo Night Company I work for to do it. Later they did, not sure if it was because of me or not. But I said for $.01 more now they will keep the card in their wallet.
Me too.Quote: boymimboWhy wouldn't you copy the logo on his Website? I'd happily distribute a million or so of his cards....
I was only suggesting them because they are among the FREE TEMPLATES that www.VistaPrints.com provides.
Like I said, I ain't paying. I was just offering the cheapest idea I could come up with. Althou Vista does them for free, like the saying goes, nothing is free. The backside has a small ad for Vista, and you gotta pay shipping. As far as I could see, there was no easy method to calculate the shipping without going thru the whole process.
If money were no object, I WOULD include the logo with the Emerald City, as well as a basic BJ strategy on the back.

great idea DJ! how could the wizard pass up an opportunity to shoot baskets at the palms! and the balls are supplied too! heck the place is so big we could hold our meet and greet here! first problem...how do we get this place comped?
I don't believe these accessories come with the room:
second problem...how do we explain this to the mrs.?
p.s. whoever said basketball isn't a contact sport, doesn't know the finer points of the game.

For the handicapped Palms has these special showers with a pole in the middle for easy gripping. Also includes safety windows to the living room so that you can see if the invalid has fallen.

I can only imaging the crazy kinky parties that go on in that suite when rented by people that aren't handicapped, but know about those features.
Makes ya wonder if they designed it with that in mind.

Well, dang! It looks as if I will be a week plus late for this party. My wife and I will be in Vegas from the early evening of Monday 4/26 until sometime the morning of Wednesday 4/29, then again from the afternoon/evening of Saturday 5/1 until late at night on Monday 5/4. We will be dropping down to Palm Springs for the two nights in between.
If anyone else will be in town on this later schedule, perhaps we could have a get-together on our schedule.
