Opal Mining in Denio

Has anyone been to the opal mines near Denio in northern Nevada? Apparently, you can pay a fee and dig away. You get to keep what you find, like this 130 pound specimen pulled out of the Royal Peacock dig:



Is it worth the fee ($50 - $180 day per person)? Would it be fun for kids? Are there similar places closer to Las Vegas?
