In my mind it would be a quick way to spread the word whilst costing little in terms of time and effort. To direct traffic to the Odds site for instance, you could post the questions from the Ask the Wizard column, making people visit for the answers. For the Vegas site, post hot topics and encourage people to post comments here.
Ultimately it is up to the Wiz himself, but does anyone else think its a good idea?
And I know there are other Social Networking Sites, but I thought Facebook and Twitter would do for the purposes of this poll?
EDIT - My own poll, and I misvote. I meant to vote for the Seperate Odds/Vegas sites without Twitter, mainly as I never tweeted in my life. Dont suppose anyone knows how to change polls?
So, pay no attention to me, I'm sure it is a good idea.
edit: I didn't vote!

Last September when I was in Vegas for a convention, one session was about social networking and keeping in contact with potential clients.
During his 45 minute session, his presentation was interruped half a dozen times by some social media posting alert.
During the Q&A, I asked "It used to be MySpace. Then it was FaceBook. Now it's Twitter. Who knows what it's gonna be next. And your own presentation was interrupted several times. So I gotta ask, how the hell do you keep up?"
He didn't have a good answer.
P.S. Happy Birthday to me, this coming Sunday. I'll be 51.Quote: DJTeddyBearCall me an old fart if you have to...
Does that qualify for 'Old fart' status yet?

i have to. Happy Birthday for Sunday you Old Fart.
The thing behind social networking, is peoples need to feel popular and important. So they compete to see who has the most "friends", leading to easily accesible groups of people that generally share at least some common interests. From a marketing perspective, that kind of database could take ages to compile, and Facebook does it all for you.
I dont know why people strive for the most friends, I just use it to keep in touch with people who I dont see much due to working the strange hours.

Yes, you too are well into your Farthood.

Some people I used to work with got on a discussion of this topic a few years back. They concluded that while being "popular" seemed to be an extremely important thing in high school, the concept, or at least the term, tended to vanish from our thinking as we got to be 20 or 25. The notable exceptions to this were politicians and entertainers. Most everyone else, once they matured a bit, seemed to be more interested in compatibility and acceptance.
I didn't vote in the poll: I have never tweeted or read a tweet, and I neither have a facebook page nor have ever looked at anyone else's. The whole subject seems irrelevant to my life, so I have no input as to how anyone else should or shouldn't use it. I sorta think it would be great if businesses pushed their marketing programs through those channels and stopped bombarding me with their messages in other forms.
I swear, all I get about Facebook is that "it's a place where you can list your friends." I do ahve a subscription in Tweeter, but I've yet to find a use for it. I mean, something it does that you couldn't otherwise do with tools already available on the internet.
It bugs me because I was using the internet as far back as 1992, long before most people even knew it existed, and so far I've kept up with it.

in the late 80s when i was a little kid, i was using the internet on our amiga 2000 :)
it took like 12hrs to download a game that couldnt have been more than a couple mbs.

You win. In the late 80s I was struggling to get a computer.

More than a couple hundred kbs, you mean :)
Well if all you're interested in is a new way to promote the sites, I think those decisions are for the Wiz and JB alone to make - unless you're planning on volunteering to do the work.Quote: CroupierI think I phrased the question poorly to start with. What I meant to be asking was whether or not it would be a good idea for the Wizard to promote the site via Facebook and Twitter, and if so which method would be preferred.
i remember this being my favorite game on the Amiga back in the day.
i wonder how much memory this game took up.

Naw, I think he probably meant a couple millibytes. Games were really small back then.

I think it's amazing that any program so small could run, much less do something.
BTW I once owned a Radio Shack Color Computer with 4 KB RAM and a tape recorder for storage.

And thats why was asking. If some of the regulars here thought it was a good idea then maybe the Wizard and JB would consider it.
AS for who was to do the work, I wouldnt be averse to it. I would happily set up and run Facebook groups to promote the sites, but I would only do it with the Wizards permission.
i would also be interested in hearing from some of the people who voted for No Wizard social networking, and why the dont think its a good idea.
Me.Quote: CroupierI would also be interested in hearing from some of the people who voted for No Wizard social networking, and why the dont think its a good idea.
But that's because, as I already pointed out, I don't "get" social media, and would be wary of the implication that some of the activity here would migrate somewhere else. That exact scenario happened to one of the DJ forums I used to be active in.
The poll said "Social Networking", not "Social Marketing", etc.
If your plan is to use it just to direct traffic here, then, ahem, I'd like to change my vote.
As the Wizard said this site was not doing as well as he had hoped, It could be a place to post snippets of articles here and encourage people to click to this site.
I missed that post.Quote: CroupierAs the Wizard said this site was not doing as well as he had hoped...
If that's the case, yeah, do the social marketing thing.
But I'd also throw in the idea I had a couple months ago of business cards.
I would also like the Wizards and JB's thoughts on this if they see it, to see if we are barking up the right tree with these kinds of idea.
