With the Wizard of Odds 5.0 coming out soon I thought I would do some touching up of the banner. The background color had to be changed anyway, and I like a change from time to time. DJTeddyBear has done some great work with all of these -- thanks Dave! So, please vote for which one you like the best. The basic choices are whether you like the green chip "Emerald City" or the more realistic looking one, plus the issue of the rainbow. Remember the song.

So, what do you think?

Everything but #8 is beyond cheezy. The chips
are over the top fantasy. The Wiz of Odds with
just the Emerald City and no rainbow suggest
professionalism with no over the top expectations.

Unless you're promising something you can't deliver,
subtle works well every time. Whats the message
you're trying to convey to people on Wiz of Odds?
That reading your advice will net them piles of
green chips? Hardly. You're telling them the truth
about gambling, that its all about math. And the
chances of you getting piles of green chips is slim
at best.

The subtle suggestion that you're whimsically
connected to the Emerald City from the Wizard
of Oz works to that end. No rainbows promising
something you can't deliver, no piles of green chips
you can't make good on. You make no promises,
the readers have no expectations.

You're very welcome.

Obviously, I'm biased, so I won't vote. Nor will I divulge the thoughts behind the genesis of these changes.

But I'm as eager as the Wiz to see the results, as well as the comments.

Thanks for the comments thus far. As I hinted at in my OP, the rainbow is supposed to allude to the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." I'll leave it to you guys to decide whether it is too over the top.

I went with #4. I like the way the chip stacks look like some kind of histogram for a simulation or trial. I think the pale rainbow and the chip-stack allusion to the Emerald City provide a humorous touch without promising any riches -- those could be the chips you lost! Wish there were some simple and clear way to suggest that knowing the math is akin to being the man behind the curtain, or at least having significant impact on your future.

I like #8. #7 is second; I think the rainbow is more realistic and not so in-your-face bold like the other ones.

I voted for #1. Those who get the Oz connection will still get it. Actually adding a rainbow and Emerald City makes me think that the site is somehow connected to the MGM Grand. I also think the chipstack transfers to the other sites better than the City. Imagine the same icon the Vegas site... It doesn't work as well for me.

What about bringing back the caricature with the Wizard hat?

Would there be any issues with the emerald city look? Are there any liscensing issues with either the Wizard of Oz or with the slot maker I believe it is WMS?

Book has been in public domain since 1956. (One of the reasons "Wicked" got made). MGM protects its trademarks from the film but I don't see any similarity there.

What about the slot maker though. They probably paid someone a pretty penny for that liscense and the graphic on the banner looks awfully similar to the graphic on the slot machine.

It doesn't really matter. They use the movie characters which they paid MGM (now Warner's) for. They aren't entitled to enforce the trademark as just a licensee.

Don't worry about the license issues.

These are just drafts.

For the final version, if we use an Emerald City, I'll probably re-draw it from scratch. Heck, that's the only way I can improve the resolution....

a pot of gold at the end of it. Thats only true for
the casino, not people reading the site.

If I go with the realistic Emerald City I'll ask DJTB to redraw it so that it isn't a blatant copy and paste.

I'm certainly not one to say there is any easy way to make money gambling, and I wasn't trying to imply that with the rainbow. It is supposed to be an homage to the "Somewhere over the Rainbow" song. There is also often a rainbow surrounding the Emerald City.

However, due to the dimensions of the banner, I can't draw a rainbow around the Emerald City.

Bob -

Yeah, I checked out those images. One of them has the Emerald City I used.

You'll note that some are radically different. Some have a double halo instead of a rainbow. And some aren't even green!

Ever tried to get to the end of the rainbow? It's always just out of reach...

My parents believed that they drove through the end of a rainbow once.

I voted number #4 followed by #7. I like the histogram over the Emerald City.

The Wizard ought to register the trademark though. There are (were) other folks using the, "Wizard of Odds" or "Wizard of Vegas" monikers on the web. Remember the in home massage guy? There's also a listing for a "Wizard of Odds Gaming Consulting" on Sienna Vista, but this may be our patron's.

I think I did register Wizard of Vegas and Wizard of Macau. Wizard of Odds I didn't because it was used before me, for example by a game show starring Alex Trebec, preceding Jeopardy. I used to live on Sienna Vista Drive.

I voted 8 as I think it looks cleaner and I like the more realistic Emerald City graphic. I get the Rainbow reference and the fact that often it is present in pictures of Emerald City, but I think you get the point of the Emerald City without the rainbow due to the yellow brick road and the realistic image of the City.
