Running Wizard's BlackJack Basic Strategy Calculator, I get a peculiar label/heading just above the actual hand chart (I tried to upload a screenshot here, but cannot get it right, sorry).

My inputs are:

  • Decks = 4 or more
  • Soft 17 = Dealer Stands
  • Double After Split = Allowed
  • Surrender = Allowed with any dealer upcard
  • Dealer Peek = No peek/no hole card (European)

Now, in the result, under the heading "Blackjack Basic Strategy" everything seems fine, except the last line indicating "Late Surrender Available".

The way I understand it (again, sorry, I'm just starting out learning BlackJack), there cannot be a late surrender when the dealer does not have a hole card, i.e. there is no card to peek at before surrender, so, especially from my last input, how does this "Late Surrender Available" indication work? Is it just a matter of a "hard" coding mistake for the output, or am I missing something?

Clearing up this anomaly is very important to me, as there seems to be quite a difference in optimal strategy between early and late surrender.

Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Good catch. The strategy heading should have said "early surrender available." Otherwise, I believe the strategy to be correct.
