Quote: onenickelmiracleAre you a member of planet fitness? Are you able to use them just fine travelling, is there anything they don't tell you? Is there anything you need to know about taking a guest, limitations, etc.?
I would read the fine print first. My Mom told me that Planet Fitness or something like that claimed she would get a free month for signing up, and charged her credit card the full price for that "Free Month," She had to get a doctor's note to get her out of that mess. I told her she should have reported them to The Better Business Bureau to get her out of that mess instead. She said something like,"You're being kind of naive, "
I would really like to lift wights....but they are kinda heavy.

A quick google search shows about 12.
Google please. And BTW, you can lift chips instead, $5000 chip is pretty heavy I heard.Quote: AxelWolfDo they even have a Planet Fitness in LV?

1. Member: No, but was.
2. Yes, but you have to have the Black Card which is $19.99/month (at least when I had it) plus some annual charge that they don’t really tell you about upfront, so make sure to figure out how much it is and when it comes out.
The $9.99 membership, at least at the time, only let you use your home gym.
3. The facilities are fine, lots of the locations are less than a few years old.
4. With the Black Card, you can take one guest anytime you want. Again, that’s going back to when I had a membership.
1) No squat racks
2) No deadlifts (that's right, putting weight on the ground, bending over, grabbing it and standing up is NOT ALLOWED)
3) Possibly no benches suitable for barbell bench press
Instead you have treadmills, ellipticals, smith machines, stack weight machines for (not) working a single body part, dumbbells up to 50lbs and possibly a set of plates somewhere for doing anything other than loading a bar.
If your goal is to get hot and sweaty you'll be fine. If your goal is to get stronger then look elsewhere.

A good friend of mine has a four year membership to Las Vegas Athletic Club ending this summer. He pays $29 a month and has not visited since the day he signed up. He is going to have a celebration after his last payment.

Why would someone sign up for a four year contract and never go?
Because that person understands sunk costs?Quote: TigerWuWhy would someone sign up for a four year contract and never go?

That has nothing to do with understanding sunk costs. The purchaser can still benefit from the spent money. He is just refusing to do so. Regardless of what is or isn't a sunk cost, I'm just curious why someone would sign a four year contract and never take advantage of it.

Well...then
I was being tongue in cheek. I know lots of people that wouldn’t use a free gym membership.Quote: TigerWuThat has nothing to do with understanding sunk costs. It gets pretty big laughs when comedians make jokes about people not using gym memberships. I believe that many people recognize how often that happens which is why they react to it.
Quote: TigerWuWhy would someone sign up for a four year contract and never go?
I can't answer that. I assume he had great intentions and then changed his mind. I know I would gladly pay $29 a month to not work out but of course I would never have signed up in the first place.

Spandex is expensive?

because us fat guys have delusions of grandeur that we will work out 4 times a week and get awesome and then a weekend goes by and we eat pizza and wings and say F it. Then realized that we have committed to a long term thing but still dont go. However I would never agree to 4 years for anything, but I have done a 12 month one once that I went 4 times.

I am a current black member. You will need a black membership to not have any problems using any location. It is currently $21.99 a month with a $39.99 one time fee. You also get unlimited use of tanning and massage beds and chairs with that.
The only thing I didn't like is having to give them checking account info to debit once a month for your fees. You cannot use a credit card. You also cannot pay the whole year up front.
They are all well run. At least here in Vegas. They have free weights at some locations.
For anyone close to one, I highly recommend Lifetime Fitness. More expensive than most, but worth it if you go.
Quote: WizardI've never seen the attraction to gyms, except if swim or something else that you just can't do at home. Whether you go for cardio or muscle, you can accomplish either by yourself. I suppose some people go because they enjoy exercising more with other people, which is fine. Personally, I prefer the outdoors.

That is exactly why I joined. I'm also going to start doing scheduled bike rides with a group for the same reason.

A large portion of the US can’t expercise outside for half the year.
Not everyone has space for indoor cardio equipment.
A decent treadmill costs several years worth of a gym membership.
Quote: TomGIt's been well documented that these chain gyms make a lot of money on people who sign up, but never use their membership. One of the most mind-opening business models I ever heard of was a gym that charged reduced rates for customers who went frequently and higher rates for customers who rarely checked in. What ended up happening is that not many people changed their exercise schedule. The ones who didn't go would keep telling themselves they'll go next week and not have to pay, but instead just continued paying and not going. The ones who did go regularly would still eventually find themselves busy, travelling, sick, and still pay the higher rates on occasion.
My local PF is absurdly busy at peak hours. You can barley get a parking space.
These places would be crippled with high member utilization.
This is why they sign you up for a year and take your checking account information. Very hard to cancel.
They charge it to my Visa automatically.
I've been to a fitness club with an indoor track. I much prefer that to any treadmill.
Yes I did. Unfortunately, after multiple stomach surgeries a few years back I don't get as much exercise as I should. You hear that old saying, I'm lucky to be alive. Well, that's an understatement in my case. Rumors went around the LV AP community that I had actually. I remember running into an AP after taking time off. He was seriously shocked and thought for sure I didnt make it.Quote: WatchMeWinHave you ever worked out or played sports in your life? If I were a betting man.....
I never gave up, whined, cried or complained about my situation I just did what I had to do and moved forward.
I seriously doubt Someone like yourself would have ever survived what I have been though and rebuilt everything he lost.
I will hand it to my now wife, she never wavered one bit.

If they're not taking out life insurance on you, it's usually a good sign.
Quote: MintyI wish I could find a gym that had a raquetball court that isn't crazy expensive. They're hard to find and I know Planet Fitness wouldn't have em.
I don't know what you consider "expensive" but I've heard of people signing up for one online class at a community college just so they could have access to a decent gym for "free." The college I was at about ten years ago had really nice racquetball courts, b-ball courts, weight room, and sauna and it was just some podunk college in the middle of nowhere.
The disadvantage is that you obviously have to take a class every semester but if you like learning or it can help your career it's worth it. You also get a lot of other student benefits; some colleges even have decent health insurance plans as long as you're a student.

That's almost worth it for the massage beds alone...
I can see a shower facility also being useful if you're traveling on the super cheap/ultra efficient. I've been told you can get a shower at a truck stop for $8-$12, that's pretty expensive.Quote: TigerWuThat's almost worth it for the massage beds alone...
1 min 16 seconds for planet fitness review
Quote: MaxPenThere are shower facilities in every one that I have been to. There are alot of homeless people living in their cars that use gyms for the showers. You can't necessarily tell inside the gym who they are but you see alot of vehicles in the parking lot with an inordinate amount of stuff inside. As well you will see camper trucks and vans in the parking lots of these places, at least here in Vegas.
I already have my homeless days planned out. I will make sure I can get a $20 gym membership where I can maybe get out of the elements plus shower. I will roam the hotels for left out room service. I will also sneak into some buffets and grab some food.

I don't have room for a power rack and a set of barbell plates in my house. That's the absolute only reason I go to the YMCA to lift.
Hopefully in our next house, there will be some space. Fkn dense New England...houses are small and expensive here.
