I am thinking about taking a long weekend in Buffalo with my wife Feb 6-8. I plan to hit up the Stars/Sabres game on Saturday and also do a little action at this casino. Anyone been there? How are the table game odds and limits? How are the on site food and drink choices? Drinks comped for play? Cigar friendly?

If anyone is familiar with the area, I also want to know if it'd be out of the realm to say stay at the Courtyard Buffalo Downtown/Canalside, and walk to the hockey game and casino from there safely and realistically. Also any advice on places with good craft beer selections we could hit up within walking distance of that particular area? I love some craft IPA's.

Any other suggestions or things I must do as I life long Sabres fan, but first time Buffalo visitor? I love the Sabres, gambling, craft beer and a good cigar.

Never been there, but do believe your ticket will get you free play when you go. If I was you, I would visit Seneca Niagara as well. Alcohol is comped at the others depending on the order, so might be.

Table games are thin as it's a small casino. You'll likely find the old stand bys, but don't expect any iteration of Bac or Pai Gow. You should at least find 3:2 with rules generally considered OK. Smoking is allowed; how "friendly" is random. Drinks and food I'm clueless on.

Walking from the Courtyard to First Niagara is cake. It's pretty much across the street. When I go (like I will be tomorrow. Go, Leafs!) I park at the Century Grille way up by E. Huron St. Those 9 or so blocks are mostly nothing but cold. Even though the area is total sketch bags, game day will have it packed with people from kerb to kerb. You're not going to get shanked or accosted. I make that walk yearly and sometimes by myself, 100% of the time in a Leafs sweater on game day. All those years and all those blocks, I've gotten into exactly one verbal altercation. Had I not been by myself, that number will likely have been zero. You'll be fine.

The walk to the casino is longer, and through the same, run down garbage fest, but you'll be just as fine. It's like a 5 minute walk, it's pretty much right there.

Unfortunately, that's all I got for ya. Whenever I go to Buffalo, my number one priority is to get out of Buffalo, so I'm not much for things to do. I know the Harbor Center just opened with its 3 rinks, but other than just checking it out, I dunno what you'd do there. Pearl Street Grill is right there at your hotel, but I just go there to pound whiskey. I don't know nothin' about no craft beers and couldn't tell you what they serve outside of Labatt Blue and Crown Royal. I suppose, if forced, I would suggest you take it all in. As you bask in the omnipresent and overwhelmed shadow of the I-190 and the Skyway, marvel at the complete cluster we've made of our waterfront and ask yourself if you don't deserve better. Perhaps a wholesome, Canadian outfit like the Calgary Flames? I'm just trying to help =)

Send a line out to SOOPOO. I bet he could help you out re: things to do.

And enjoy! First Niagara is a nice joint. My pre-emptive apologies that the Sabres lost.

If gambling is high on your list for this visit, I'll second this opinion. They are many times larger and with a much broader range of games, including Bac, Pai Gow, and even Tiles. It's easy to get to (mostly a straight thruway shot with just two turns) and is only about 20 min away, depending on traffic.

And again, if you're looking for more info, SOOPOO would be your man.

Just to update, it's about 150 steps from the Courtyard's lobby to First Niagara's lobby. Granted I was wobbling back and forth, so you might be able to shave a few steps or so, provided you walk straight.

And here I am at the corner of the casino parking lot, looking at First Niagara (it's the dome bubble back there). You'll be cold, but it's an easy walk. I usually wear one or two thermals, a hoody, and a hockey sweater. It's just enough to tolerate the cold walk, while not being too hot for the mid 50's inside the arena. That way you don't have to worry about a bulky coat and can sport your gear.

I'm now a season ticket holder. I have a couple of guys I share with, and I already gave away the Stars game. Thursday they play the Blues, and Sunday they play the Islanders, so its a full hockey weekend. The walk from the arena to the casino is maybe 3 minutes. I haven't been inside the casino there, but have been told it is nothing special. The Niagara Falls casino, Seneca Niagara, is similar to most big Vegas casinos. It has a really nice steakhouse, a good 'Asian fusion' restaurant, and a tremendous variety of games. If you let me know when you are coming in, and leaving, I can make some suggestions. PM me at your convenience.

I'll definitely hit you up for some advice closer to trip date, SooPoo. Thanks for the insight.

As of right now it looks like I'll be leaving here right after work about 7pm Friday night. It's a 5 hour drive up so I plan to get there around midnight. Friday night I plan to stay at the Courtyard and visit the Buffalo casino for a bit, grab some Buffalo wings (where are the good ones at?) and have a few beers before the game. Then hit the game.

After the game, it looks like we will be driving to Seneca Niagara and spending Saturday night there. So we can get our late night gambling, drinking, fix. Sunday grab some food at the casino and visit the falls, unless the temperatures don't allow that, but if they do gamble some more. Then around 3pm start heading for home 5 hours away.

Should be a good time, hopefully theres not a foot of snow our sub zero temps then, but who knows that far in advance?

If you want 'buffalo' wings, you should probably go to the Anchor Bar at North & Main which claims to have invented the damn things. Can't guarantee they are the best you've ever had, but it's a pilgrimage trip.
