When I first saw this, I thought the bowling alley is a good idea, but it's something of a "Keeping up with the Jones'" sort of thing - Foxwoods added an upscale bowling alley a couple years ago.Quote: 1BBMohegan Sun in Connecticut has just announced a 200,000 square foot expansion. Plans call for a Johnson & Wales cooking school, Marquee Cinemas 14-plex Premium Cinema, a retro bowling facility and more shops.
I also question the wisdom of adding a cooking school. Then I was flipping thru my collection of casino hotel door keys. I have a key that sale retires the cooking school at Harrah's AC. I didn't realize they had one - not that I was looking for one...

Maybe they can keep up with the Joneses but how about "Keeping up with the Kardashians"? It was Kim who opened the bowling alley at Foxwoods by rolling the first ball in her skin tight dress and stiletto heels.
Quote: IbeatyouracesAnd I'm sure she got paid at least six figures to do so.
I'm sure. A bunch of saps paid fifty bucks each to be in a VIP area and then whined when they couldn't even see her.

Kims the highest paid porn star ever since her fame derived from her pornography. She didn't overcome it, she schemed from it.
Quote: TankoThey should spend some of that money on Blackjack Dealers.
Arrived at Mohegan yesterday (Sunday) at 2PM to play Blackjack. Their games $10 an up are all six-deck, late surrender, S17. Lots of closed tables. Went through all three casinos before I found an open seat on my second orbit. Six players at every table, except $50 min. Lots of people standing near tables hoping to get a seat. Got up after two hours and never found another seat. Went home. Not what it used to be, but Mohegan Blackjack rules are better than Foxwoods.
If you are a counter, Foxwoods' H17 eight deck games are playable due to the deep penetration. I'm not saying to run over there and bet the farm, just that it is another choice. Be patient, avoid negative counts and remember that the 0.21% house edge for H17 shrinks when the count rises. That's when you have the money up.
I don't go to casinos during crowded hours and avoid them like the plague on weekends. For those who do go at those times it is a great disservice to have to fight for a table. Save a buck and lose hundreds seems to be the mentality and it just makes no sense.
Not necessarily.Quote: onenickelmiracleBowling is just to get the kids used to coming to the casino, so the seed is planted and they when legally able to gamble, one day sooner or later, they just wander in just to see it.
The one at Foxwoods is very upscale. It looks more like a trendy night club than a bowling alley. I'm not sure but I don't think they allow unattended kids in.
Quote: TankoWhy bother counting, or even playing an eight-deck, H17, no-late surrender game at Foxwoods
The 8-deck games at Foxwoods allow late surrender, unless they changed it recently.
Brother Steven, the tribal treasurer if you can believe it, is charged with stealing $700,000 and is awaiting trial. No one familiar with the antics of this bunch is surprised.

All the TV stations here covered this but they didn't say what game he was playing. I'm told it was Mississippi Stud.
Quote: HardAcesIf anyone wants a potentially risk-free advantage play at one of these casinos, private message me. Don't want to post in public but willing to share.
If there's no catch and you just want to share out of the goodness of your heart go ahead and PM me. I can get to the casino anytime to have a look but I do not meet up with people or otherwise make myself known.
Who rolled the other one? Another "celebrity"?Quote: 1BBIt was Kim who opened the bowling alley at Foxwoods by rolling the first ball in her skin tight dress and stiletto heels.
Quote: SanchoPanzaWho rolled the other one? Another "celebrity"?
Kim's first was a gutter ball so she rolled a couple of more. I didn't notice if any of the other "boobs" in attendance took a shot after that. For the record I did not go to the casino just to see her. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :-)
Quote: onenickelmiracleBowling is just to get the kids used to coming to the casino, so the seed is planted and they when legally able to gamble, one day sooner or later, they just wander in just to see it.
Mohegan has a whole game room/arcade area that serves teh dual purpose of being able to dump the kids off (child care is provided) and get the kids going on their first bit of "gambling"
I can understand the argument that America was discovered by someone before Columbus. I can also understand teaching that, if true, Columbus wasn't a good guy.
But the fact remains that SOMEONE discovered this continent, along with the natives. They were on a voyage of exploration. 'Discovery' of something is an expected result.
If the natives had made the voyage first, they would be correctly credited with discovering Europe.
Quote: TankoAccording to this article all of that is true:
Columbus
Thank you for the link, Tanko. Several Mohegans are descendants of the Tainos mentioned in that eye opening article. I've witnessed some terrible things but nothing compared to the allegations about Columbus which could turn the stomach of even the coldest person.
Foxwoods is still matching any slot play, free bets, match play and food from casinos in NY, NJ, CT and RI. Don't dally, it expires on Oct 31st.
Quote: 1BBHere's another comparison. No tribal officials from Mohegan Sun have been on trial recently for stealing from their own tribe. Not so across the river at Foxwoods where the Thomas brothers have been quite busy. Michael Thomas the former tribal chairman, was found guilty this week in U.S.District Court of stealing over $100,000 from the tribe. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 22.
Brother Steven, the tribal treasurer if you can believe it, is charged with stealing $700,000 and is awaiting trial. No one familiar with the antics of this bunch is surprised.
Michael Thomas was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison today. He had his supporters in court and others wrote to the judge on his behalf. Maybe she listened to them because the sentencing guidelines called for 21 to 27 months.
One supporter who wrote to the judge was none other than Patrick "Do you know who I am?" Kennedy.
The key to watching this show, for me, is to view it as entertainment or light fantasy rather than the ridiculous nonsense that it really is. The show was filmed last October so I know some of what's to come but I'm looking forward to seeing how one of my home casinos is portrayed. Enjoy, everyone!

I'll probably record it. One of these days I'll get back there.
Quote: 1BBUndercover Boss will feature both Mohegan Suns tonight with tribal official Bruce "Two Dogs" Bozsum doing the undercover honors. I have met Two Dogs and have spoken with him a few times. I've always found him to be a really nice, interesting guy. He's no stranger to television cameras having done many interviews for all types of media from countries all over the world.

Here's a review from a Native American who previewed the episode:
The show delivered as was advertised, and after it ended our very discerning and critical crowd let out a surprising steady and appreciative round of applause. The episode was formulaic to a T, and Mr. Bozsum did a great job navigating that formula and seemed quite at ease with it. We applauded for a few reasons , but most important was that we had experienced a rare occurrence in Hollywood: a feel-good Native storyline and portrayal. We are so accustomed to seeing our people playing the stereotypical villain or second banana to a masked man, that we are awed by any depiction that breaks that mold.

Actually, I kind of see their point. Mascot race at the ballpark: Eagle, Panther, Bear, Redskin.
OTOH: Texan, 49er, (meat)Packer, Senator, Oiler, Steeler.
If Mohegan Sun would just give decent penetration for their blackjack games it would be perfect but they'd rather keep shooting themselves in the foot as they have been for the past 16 years.

You have got to read "Without Reservation" by Jeff Benedict. You can see a short summary of it on amazon.

I was going to spare you my disappointment, but since you brought it up ... yes, it was pretty bad.
Much of my own problem is just never liking Reality TV. My skin starts to crawl at the format. So the show had no chance with me and I should have known it.
Quote: 1BBHere in Connecticut the Mohegans are the real deal and are respected members of the community. The Mashantucket Pequots, who run Foxwoods, are another story.

If they had only worked a management deal with the Schagticokes over in Kent/Cornwall they might have staved off the declines. It would appear the other foot has a self-inflicted wound too.
Across the river, Foxwoods has begun construction on a $115 million Tanger Outlets with 80 upscale stores expected to open in late 2014 or early 2015.
Quote: 1BBMy apologies to anyone who went out of their way to watch Undercover Boss last night. It was just awful.
I beg to differ. For the first time in many years I have not been to MS for over a week. Feeling nostalgic, I pulled up the Undercover Boss episode tonight. It was what I expected and fairly well done, IMHO. Mr. Bozsum headed an organization of 13,000 employees. The organization and employees were the focus of the story, as I expected. Not the gamblers. Not the lives turned to shambles. Not the life fortunes lost. Not the marriages ruined. The reality show would not show the seedy underside of the gambling business any more than Walmart would show the third-world sweat shops they depend on. The MS employees are not permitted on the gaming floor, in the lounges or past the hotel lobby. I have heard of one employee being fired simply for having an out-of-casino social relationship with a gambler. So, I wasn’t really surprised that actual gambling wasn’t much a part of the show. (Full disclosure: I am aware that many of the MS employees scoot over to Foxwoods to gamble.) The work environment at MS is like anywhere else with its share of infighting and backstabbing, but I wouldn’t expect to see that portrayed on Undercover Boss. The theme of the show was the employees bust ass to do demanding jobs. No surprise there, except I thought it nice that they didn’t show what flaming assholes some customers are. My only disappointment was they seemed to have cut a segment where Mr Bozsum acted as a dealer. The promo photos had him in a dealer uniform with the vest that is only worn in the high roller pits. Okay, I thought the ending was over the top with Mr. Bozsum paying Fairy Godfather to the employees he had worked with. The image of MS portrayed by Undercover Boss was scripted to show the business in a very favorable light. I expected nothing different.

Pretty much the formula of every Undercover Boss episode. So predictable.

You certainly may differ and I'm glad you enjoyed the show. My issue is with the show and not with the Mohegans. I have always thought of and spoken of the tribe and it's members in a positive light. I know some of them and the Two Dogs that you saw on the show is the real deal and not an act.
Two Dogs never headed anything. He is finishing a position on the Tribal Council and is the ceremonial pipe carrier for the tribe. He has nothing to do with casino operations. He doesn't always get the facts straight, either, as evidenced by his statement implying that Mohegan Sun owns Resorts AC. Mohegan Sun is run by very savvy people with years or experience. Mitch Etess is the CEO of the Mohegan Tribal Authority and CEO of the basketball team. Bobby Soper is President and CEO of Mohegan Sun.
Two Dogs probably wasn't able to deal at a live table game because he doesn't have a license. I was wondering how the fake tattoos would be handled if he did deal because they must be covered up. It didn't make sense to have those finger tattoos if he was going to deal.
The show seemed to spend a lot of time in Pennsylvania just for the son, Jacob, to walk by his dad and not recognize him. It's the same scripted nonsense as all the other Undercover Boss shows. I'm glad to see Jacob is doing okay. He was a US Army Ranger and has two tours of Iraq under his belt.
Two Dogs did a nice thing for five people and I'm sure the other 12,995 workers are happy for them. Undercover Boss did a show on the MGM Grand in Vegas a while ago. Did you see it?

I have, maybe, watched four reality TV show episodes in my whole life, including the Mohegan Sun one. Feel free to bash reality show formats, I'm with you on that. Now that you have expanded on your objections about the Mohegan Sun show I agree with your points. I have already missed seeing Bruce Bozsum's portrait on the wall at MS along with the other Tribal Council members. Thanks for the insight on upper management. I was aware of the c-suite shakeups lately and speculated the cause as the year-and-a-half time it took to implement the new Momentum CRS after purchasing the software. I was not aware of Jacob's distinguished service. I'm sure Mr. Bozsum is justifiably very proud of his son. On a positive note, now that I've seen some footage of the Pocano casino I am much more inclined to Mohegan Sun's operation there. Excellent reasoning as to why Mr.Bozsum could not deal at a table due to licensing and tattoos. Thanks for sharing.
