I wish Nevadans would simply say "OK" to accepting the country's nuclear waste for final burial at Yucca Mountain.

The current lack of a final resting place for spent nuclear material is delaying our once again embracing nuclear power.

The technology has improved quite a bit since the old reactors / facilities were designed and built; we could drastically limit our dependence on oil and gas if we converted en masse to electrically propelled vehicles.

Sure, the technology is primitive for electric vehicles now, limited primarily by battery issues, but that will change.

Nevada IMO was not the place to try to do anything that required public approval, since the folks there had started to regret being nuclear guinea pigs.

I'm very much pro-nuclear power. But fission is a limited source. it's good, but complex, expensive and produces too much dangerous waste. It's a good stop-gap measure til we develop practical fussion power, if we ever do. Fussion will eb as complex, expensive and produce some wate, but the fuel will be cheap and unlimited.

Batteries, now, are a pain in the neck. Sure, they've inproved, a lot. Just lok at cell phones now and comapre them to the bricks we used to carrya round as recently as 15 years ago. But they ahve other problems.

The future for ground transportation, and possibly sea transportation, lies in hydrogen fuel cells.

If I get any time off work I'll post in detail over the weekend.

Washingtonians should simply say "OK" to accepting the country's nuclear waste for final burial at, say, Mount Rainier.

Pshaw.

Washington is a nest of volcanoes.

Hello, Mt. St. Helens.

Things are geologically stable in Nevada.

Look, we have to put it somewhere ... Yucca Mtn. is remote and as safe a place as we will find.

Can't we just ship it to Chernobyl and dump it there?

"Nuclear waste" is a tough sell. They should call it something else if they want someone to take it.
There's no secret. Just know what you're talking about before you open your mouth.

Vegas had Miss Atomic Bomb contests in the 50's.

"To lighten up the mood many of the casinos advertised Nuclear Bomb picnics (Miss Atomic Bomb would hand out the sun glasses and eye shades that everyone had to wear even if they weren't going to look directly at the blast.) to be held out by the swimming pools and a big Miss Atomic Bomb Beauty contest would top it off with the winner to win $250 and preside over the picnic which was going to be broadcast on local TV."
