I said in a WoVCon thread I won't be able to make it to Vegas this year due to an ongoing family emergency and a tax problem. This is all true.
The emergency is this: my father collapsed two weeks ago and has been in the intensive care unit since. First the doctors thought there a metastasis from a cancer that was successfully treated into remission four years ago. Then they thought it might be a different type of cancer. Fortunately cancer is not the problem, but he's still in delicate condition and, when he does get better, will require a great deal of physical therapy and support.
That's the main reason I can't leave on vacation this year. I live close to my parents and am perfectly suited to help out, even given my erratic work schedule. conceivably he could be ok by June, but that's not likely. In any case it would be irresponsible of me to make vacation plans for then.
The tax problem is complicated but it boils down to this: I had to pay again taxes I'd already paid in the past year. If I didn't I'd get fined. My accountant says I'll get my money back in three or four months, but that if I were fined, even if he could prove the screw-up lay in the tax agency, I'd still have to pay the fine (and the fine would show up on my credit report).
Even so I could have afforded a trip, had I not changed my aging Nissan for a new Toyota a few months ago.
A bad set of circumstances, but a temporary one. And so, I can't make it to Vegas this year.
Quote: heliciousHow nice of you to show the need to save face after JL2, in such an UNARMED way, made you explain yourself so you didn't feel any smaller than you already are. I'm sure your parents are so proud of their freak.
And yes, this is JL2, aka Jerry Logan you bunch of geniuses! At least EvenBob got something right while he's bored with the wife each night getting home from work.
BTW--hod'ya like that PM you just read?
Wow Logan, like we didn't know it was you. I wonder how your boss there at 55th would like knowing that his night time $15 an hour call taker is wasting time on the internet insulting people. Must make you feel good. Of course, since this is all the enjoyment you get out of life, you will continue. I wonder if a phone call to your boss would make a difference, but then again, I would hate for you to lose your little, worthless, pathetic job all because you can't control yourself. Keep fighting the good fight man, but it won't place the blame for your failures on others. They still belong to you.
edit: and he'll stick around because people talk about him all day everyday on this board regardless of the content of his posts
I have to admit that I used to enjoy reading the JL1/JL2/RS silly rhetoric and weak attempts at argumentation, it was fun to a point.
But that point seems to have passed. I feel dirty by having looked at the page polluted by the junk spat by this clown.
I have pretty high tolerance for stupidity, and for poor ability to reason, I find ignorance and arrogance cute and amusing, I understand and forgive excited utterances, and "crimes of passion", I welcome attempts at sophistic, and provocative or non-tradition argumentation from opponents, I realize that most people don't even read the responses they get, and keep arguing for the sake of the argument, I understand and accept that for most people being "right" means more than finding the correct answer.
But insulting people on purpose, without a provocation or even a hint at a reason, and not as a side effect of a poorly formulated argument, but as the primary line is where I draw the line, and conclude, that there is nothing to be had but dirt from interacting with such a person. Ever.
Even if forum engine lacks the feature, you can always shun the subnet via web server configuration. I would be happy to assist is there is any need.

Oh, and with all that portrayal of web-intellect, you seem to be forgetting those of us with means have multiple devices, and most of them are WIRELESS.
Like I said, if there are any technical problems implementing a reliable ban of a particular user, I am happy to help. Even people who have discovered wireless technology in their limited wisdom can be shunned.
Quote: gofaster87I don't understand the need to ban anyone. Everyone posting about the topics pertaining to RS and JL just fuel the fire and give him something to post about. If he bothers you that much just don't answer him or start topics discussing him. For as intelligent as most people seem on this board I don't understand why everyone plays into the game. Ive had a few emails in the past with Singer and he has always been civil so I can only assume he enjoys "messing with you" and you keep fueling it.
Yes, that was exactly my position up until today.
As long as he was spitting his insults "in the heat of a discussion", to those, who had knowingly engaged into conversation with him, it was fair game in my book. They (and by "they" I mean "us", including myself) knew exactly who they were talking to, and what they could expect from him, and knowingly subjected themselves to it in exchange for ... I dunno ... perhaps, the slight amusement of a conversing with an inferior being.
Things changed today, after he went berserk, and just started spitting his crap everywhere, including PMs. I think, this has to end before it escalates to the next level.

What's the next level, tracking people down and harassing them in person?

I don't know what will be the next level. My very point is that I don't want to find out.

That's not how it usually works. The troll, whoever he is, starts out posting something controversial but reasonable. He then either gets nasty or highly UNreasonable. The latest Singer thread is a good example. Jerry started more or less honestly asking what's the problem, then used rhetorical tricks (quite skilfully , too) to try to make Singer a victim of everyone else.
By this time he has pissed people off big time (sorry for the language), and quite anturally everyone wants to bring him down a notch. Of course now everyone's angry, too, and anger is an emotion that demands satisfaction. Jerry also gets nastier as he's getting even more unreasonable. At this point he adds the teflon brain feature: facts can't stick to his brain.
The obvious and simple solution is for everyone to ignore the troll. Like most obvious and simple solutions, this one won't work.
Apparently what works against him is his own fears and prejudices. For someone so skilled in rhetorical tricks to make Big Brother feel inadequate, he gets terribly childish with his insults when it comes to a transsexual woman. But we can't rely on that, especially since he's reading this and now he knows that we know.
So it's better to ban the troll and move on.
Quote: NareedGoing by past experience the banning of JL2 will attract at least another troll soon. Also going by past experience, I'll wind up in a battle of wits with an unarmed person. So, to spare the next troll some embarrassment, I'll explain a few things about a recent comment I made.

I wish your father a speedy recovery. I always say a problem that can't be solved by throwing money at it is a real problem, and that seems to be the case here. :(
We won't even talk about taxes. I spent last night and this morning gathering up the expenses for the annual trip to the accountant. Ugh.

Thank you. but no, that's not the problem here. Not this time anyway. Friday before last he had high levels of lactic acid and that caused blood acidosis. I wasn't worried about that, but about the fact the levels were not coming down despite agressive treatments. Since then he has been getting better, only very slowly.

Lucky you. I used to have to see the accountants once a month. Thank God that's changed (an atheist thanks God only for very LARGE favors, you know). Anyway, good luck with the accountant.
To everyone, please just stop responding to obvious trolls. I admit I've succumbed to the temptation, so am in no position to point fingers. As someone pointed out to me earlier, the opposite of love is not hate, it is apathy.
Also, don't hesitate to make use of the "flag post" feature. If enough users flag a post, it will get removed. There is a point system, where the longer one has been a member the more post busting points you earn. To be honest, I forgot the details, but will explain them in a separate post after JB refreshes my memory.
Meanwhile, I busted every post by helicious.
Quote: WizardNareed, my sympathy about your dad. This close to April 15, we Yanks can empathize with your tax troubles. I just did mine, hopefully correctly.
Thank you, on both counts.

I'll try, but you know it's not easy, my patented method to the contrary notwithsanding.
Long story short, at first the trouble seemed to be metastasis of an earlier cancer to the lung and stomach, or lymphoma. These were ruled out and there was some recovery. The problem lay in three opportunistic infections, and the fact that his immune system simply didn't respond. Throughout he required dialysis, as his kidneys decreased in function. There were ups and downs, too, but finally about three days ago he began to deteriorate. His kidneys simply didn't work, his immune system might as well not have been there, he was very weak, his blood pressure kept dropping and yesterday the blood acidosis returned so strong it interfered with his pacemaker.
For the past near seven weeks he was mostly not there. He had some periods of consciousness and awareness, but only briefly and anyway the tube in his throat prevented him communicating much. We all hoped he'd pull through, but I don't think we really expected it.
I'm angry because his lungs were mostly clear and his heart was in relatively good shape all things considered. It just seems so absurd to succumb to a few bugs.
Also over the past ten years he was hospitalized five or six other times. Even if he had survived these infections, I kept worrying how long it would be to the next crisis.

Nareed, your circumstances are strikingly similar to what mine were some 10 years ago right down to the diagnoses and subsequent anger. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.
