I cannot figure out why
3-3-4
is not a valid option.

Thoughts?

I suggest providing a link to the weekly logic puzzle you are referring to, otherwise this post is likely to be buried in a shallow, unmarked grave.

If the answer was 334, then the logician's age is 10; when the wizard says that the sum of the digits equals the logician's age, the logician would have known that 334 is the only possible solution at this point (it is the only one with non-decreasing digits where the digit product is 36 and the sum is 10), rather than saying that they still needed more information.
