I was reading an article about foods that Americans no longer eat and was surprised by some.I was never a fan of liverwurst, but it was everywhere when I was young. I had no idea Boars Head no longer even makes it.
Sloppy Joes were a staple, both at home and in school. My HS used to cut one end of an Italian roll, scrape out most of the brading and pour the sloppy joe into it. At home, we mostly had it on hamburger rolls
My Mom surprised me once with an olive loaf sandwich- a mixture of bologna and some other suspicious processed meats, with olives and pimentos pressed into it.
Tuna casseroles were reserved for Fridays, as my parents didn't eat meat that day.
Many of my friends' moms used to mix jello and fruits
Last and perhaps least, we used to eat banana sandwiches, sometimes even toasted.
For some unknown reason, Spanish nuts used to very popular

In the 70s and most of the 1980s, every NY pizzeria used to sell an item that some called hippie roles, others called eppie rolls and it had a few other names. It was sausage, pepper, and onions cooked in dough.

Sloppy Joes, tuna casserole, and jello with fruit were always staples in our house. I think liverwurst was more east coast.

Liverwurst was definitely popular "back in the day". It's still easy to get anywhere around Wisconsin. Apparently most people mix it with butter or cream cheese, then spread it on toast or crackers. I prefer to slice it into patties and pan fry it.

Every once in a while, I get a hankering for Franco-American canned spaghetti. The Campbell's replacement just doesn't seem quite the same. (The sodium would easily overwhelm me.)

I haven't seen anyone dining on liver & onions in a long while.

I used to love 7-11 Nachos and cheese - I guess they're still around

really salty corn chips smothered with chili made with low grade beef byproducts and then you add some low grade liquified American cheese on top

now, more health conscious I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole

The only candy bar I really liked was Butterfinger. Until a rumor went out in elementary school that a rat had fallen in the vat. A lot of kids ate "Now & Laters" but I didn't ever like them.

Oh, Jaw Breakers, which my mom wouldn't buy. And the gum with the comic.

Most of the gums were hard as a rock then.

Way too much candy. In the late 50s the lady next door would give me 35 cents to go to the small store a few blocks away and get her a 25 cent pack of cigarettes. The 10 cents was mine and I spent it on bags of candy. In those days stores had a big selection of candy for just a penny one scoop in a small paper bag for a penny. I would get like five bags of it and spend the rest of it on bazooka chewing gum. Luckily I haven't eaten sugar since 1972.

Speaking of candy, does anyone remember the Marathon(r) Bar? Braided chocolate and caramel. They were good but eventually vanished.

It sounds a lot like a "walking taco". As I understand, a Frito Pie is very similar, but never (seldom?) uses the bag as a dish, and is often baked to melt the cheese.

I gleefully admit that I am not supposed to eat either Frito Pie or walking tacos.

I had only seen the Frito Pie done up family style, and baked in a pie dish.

there used to be a restaurant chain in the DC area called Little Tavern

they sold little burgers - they were sliders but didn't call them sliders then - they were quite good - very juicy

their slogan was "Buy 'em by the bag"

Besides potato chips Fritos might have been the earliest snack chip. It came out in 1932 and Frito pies were around in the 1930s in Texas. I never liked Fritos they were way too salty and way too dense, almost hard. And you could smell people who had eaten them when they were walking down the hall at school. They gave you Frito breath.

Frito's were probably one of my least favorite chip snacks until they came out with the Honey BBQ flavor. I do like those. Plain Frito's do have a smell that is not pleasant.

Twinkies? Ding dongs? We weren't allowed to eat those my mom would not allow junk food in the house, other than soda. You'd think I would have grown up to crave junk food but other than what I could trade with the other kids to get my hands on twinkies at grammar school I never got into junk food, and stopped drinking soda by the time I was about 11 years old too.

Are twinkies and ding dongs still au courant or are these now considered "What did you used to eat?"

Well here is one that 'I used to eat' that I would still be eating if I could get it, even though it's going to scandalize Bob!

I've noticed a lot of things disappeared during Covid, never to return again it seems. This is one of them, though I checked and it is still made. No store around me carries it anymore, though, and they all used to. I could get it at the deli counter sliced fresh for a while, but that's gone now too

So why would I eat something so full of fat and chemicals? For old times sake, and also I just like it. Why not just eat bologna and put some relish, pimentos, pickles and such in the sandwich? It just ain't the same!

Ooh, interesting.
I used to see a lovely Olive Loaf (close cousin of P&P) from a regional manufacturer at one of the little grocery stores I like to stop at, but I haven't seen it in a while.

Delightful cold, but it seems way too salty when I warm it up.

I still eat Ding Dongs and Ho Ho's. I do not remember eating them as a child, but today I will buy a box every month or two.

Stores around here sell Hostess Suzie Qs, a product I thought was long gone. I had to buy a pack and even sprung for a quart of real milk to enhance the experience. They weren't terrible, but they were much messier than I recall. Other than an occasional ice cream, I rarely eat desserts.

They are getting better and better at this. There's a new study that is being quoted everywhere that if you eat just one hot dog it takes 39 minutes off the end of your life. If you eat some fries and a coke with it it's 90 minutes. Whereas if you ate a handful of almonds or a can of sardines you would actually add minutes to your life. This Olive loaf has got to be right up there with a hot dog. It's super processed super salty super full of crap that humans should never eat. It not only takes years off your life it takes quality of life off the end of it. I'm 75 and believe me quality of life means everything eventually. Who wants to get up everyday feeling like crap with no energy, just basically waiting to die. That's what eating this food will do to you. Oh Bob, you're such a killjoy. It's like if you were hitting yourself in the head with a hammer and I told you to stop you would be grateful. But not food, people eat what they want to eat when they want to eat it and screw everything else. Then in the end all they do is piss and a moan.

But seriously, I'm finding more and more often that I want a snack, but I don't want chips, fries, or something from a fast food vendor. About half the time, looking over the menu turns my stomach sour.

Fixing up a salad just doesn't seem to hit the spot. (Neither does a handful of nuts. I've tried it.)

Hopefully the apples are crunchy enough. I have a bag of Ambrosias I'm working through, but they seem to keep getting bruised (they're a bit delicate) - I may need to figure out a better way to cushion their ride.

I always keep a Ziploc bag of almonds and walnuts with me all the time in the car. Almonds and walnuts are very filling and they're extremely good for you in ways you can't even imagine. I eat them everyday along with two or three other kinds of nuts also. But nuts are expensive, avocados are expensive, a small can of sardines is somewhat expensive. Healthy stuff is hardly ever cheap that's another reason people don't eat it.

Walnuts are a food that gags my wife. She seems fine with every other nut but when he finds a walnut in something she gags and vomits.

I add a scoop of Super Six seeds to my breakfast smoothie and a splash of olive oil.

Organic brown flax, golden flax, sunflower, sesame, black chia, and pumpkin seeds.

To a modern person everything is good if it's heavily salted because that's basically the only spice that they know. You could heavily salt a dog turd and people will think it's great. Once you give up salt and start eating things as they naturally are in a very short time your taste will change and you will really appreciate what food is supposed to taste like. I gave up salt 2 years ago this month and I was really scared that I would hate everything and very quickly the opposite was true. I didn't miss salt at all and still don't.

I love eating walnuts! Only thing is, apparently I don't digest them.

If I have more than just a couple, they bind together and block my anus, requiring manual extraction. One time I ate several handfuls, and after a couple of agonized hours in the bathroom trying to pass them, I had to resort to this process, leaving both brown and bright red residue on my hand. After washing I collapsed in bed for a few more hours until the pain and shock subsided. I am fortunate this happened at home and not in a public toilet. Now I do not eat more than 1 or 2 walnuts. This doesn't happen to me with any other kind of nut.

I really enjoy limburger cheese, but almost never see it in the store anymore. I buy it when I see it. Smells foul but tastes good.

I rarely see the candy called "Chunkies" amymore - maybe occasionally in a Cracker Barrel restaurant store.

So many better men, a few of them friends, are dead. And a thousand thousand slimy things live on, and so do I.

Chicken Chow Mein. Perhaps it was a regional thing but until I was in my twenties, it seemed like all Chinese food was chow mein, or lo mein, egg rolls and fortune cookies.

Smorgasbord. Before buffets, there were smorgasbord. Dozens of items, of all variety of cooking all in one place. A salad bar where everything was a main dish.

In the early 70s, a fondue craze swept America. People had fondue parties, and many fondue places opened, then transformed into wine and cheese parlors. For a few years, they were a real threat to the bar scene, but they mostly faded away by the mid-80s
