Bet a sport you know and understand. Bet small to start. Learn the bets. Then you can expand.

I know it exists locally, in some places. I don't know whether or not there is a nationally broadcasted league anymore. I'd probably watch roller derby if I watched TV at all, was flipping through the channels and happened upon it.

It does. The Bombers still compete, although it's on a smaller scale. There are several All-Woman leagues, and a few mixed leagues.
The Bay Area Bombers have several matches a year at Avi, or at least they were doing so a few years ago. The old arena in the Commercial Center occasionally hosts roller derby.
The big difference is almost everyone plays on a flat track rather than the old banked tracks. It's just easier to transport and set up.
Believe it or not, it's become more theatrical. Each skater tries to adopt a personality, ala pro wrestling.
