George is one of my oldest friends. We met when I was freshman in college and he was in art school. We both loved comics and in those days that was enough for a friendship to form. To no ones surprise, he found work as an artist and rose to the very top of his profession. Recently, he'd been forced to stop drawing due to vision problems brought on by diabetes but he was optimistic that his liver surgery scheduled for right after Thanksgiving would give him back a decent quality of life.
So when I got an email addressed to his friends and family, I knew something was wrong.
Turned out the liver operation was a success, but that they discovered pancreatic cancer. They say he would have six months if he undergoes treatments but he has decided to forego any treatments and spend the time with his wife and kids. He thinks he has six weeks to do the things he wants to do, and will be face-booking his last road trip.

The older I get, the better I recall things that never happened

So sorry, billryan.
The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; but that is the way to bet.

I am so fortunate. I have still never had anyone close to me die. Not a friend or family member. The closest would be my college roommate of five years. He passed about four years ago but I hadn't communicated with him in over 20 years.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

George did a follow up for his friends and fans. Although he can no longer draw, he can still sign his name so he is hoping to do one last charity signing.
He ended with this....
"I also hope that I will be able to make one last public appearance wherein I can be photographed with as many of my fans as possible, with the proviso that I get to hug each and every one of them. I just want to be able to say goodbye with smiles as well as tears."
