Most of my friends went. I passed.
Back then, you could rent a school bus for little more than the cost of a driver in the summer and two buses left from my neighborhood for the show. Many missed the return buses and ended up getting back on their own. Most agreed it was a fantastic show.

First real concert I went to I think was FOGHAT and/or BLUE OYSTER CULT, maybe a double bill. ~ 1977-78 or so.
There's emptiness behind their eyes There's dust in all their hearts They just want to steal us all and take us all apart

Mine was Jethro Tull, Spring of 1975.
Blue Oyster Cult was a local band and their main guy Eric Bloom owned a bar where he'd bartend Sunday late night when he wasn't on tour. I was lucky enough to have been there on a few slow nights so we got to bullshit a bit. His bar was right next to the legendary My Fathers Place in Rosyln so if they had a Sunday night show, Bloom's place might be packed, but if there was no show they'd be a dozen locals.

I think Live Aid (although this may apply more to its "predecessor," Band Aid) is almost as well known for its after effects than the concert itself.

Apparently, most of the relief consisted of (a) buying food and other supplies, (b) pretty much dropping it off on docks in affected countries, and (c) letting their governments sort out the details - some of whom used it to implement forced relocation.
