A large national credit card issuer has made a $55 error in my favor. Should I inform them of the error? Or should I keep my mouth shut?

To make a long story short, the bank was supposed to refund an annual fee for a credit card. A mistake was made and they never did, so I had to call them to complain. After the call, the refund posted to my account on my February statement and I was happy, case closed. But then the refund occurred again on my March statement.

It's possible that they'll notice the mistake and remove the credit. But this is one of the largest credit card issuers in the U.S., with millions of accounts, so it's very likely they won't notice. What should I do?

I think they'll see it and you'll see the $55 debited against the account in the next couple months. I'd give it a couple months to happen, and if it doesn't, then you might give them a call. They may also have credited the card twice for goodwill; I've had cable, banks, Telco, others credit my account for having to call and complain about their error or lengthy outage or something.

Had something similar a few months ago but measly amounts credited like $5 or $10 in comparison to bills $150 to $250 or so.

Been with Verizon for 14 years straight an then additional previously to that. Just went a nasty round with them and for the trouble they upgraded one of our phone and also waived the activation and other charges, value about $250/$300 range. Very interesting to note, when you threat hen on them to disconnect they have a special department you get transferred to called, "Customer Retention" dept.

Do nothing. Not because you want or need their 55 bucks but because you should not be inconvenienced by someone's careless mistake - twice. If they catch it fine, if they don't that's also fine. I'm sure someone will compare it casino errors but, either way, it is not your job. Are they going to reimburse you for your time correcting their mistake? Your time is worth something.

LOL

it's the right thing, but I sympathize with the reluctance to engage 'the system' and deal with a run-around

you could do this, and I have done this in other circumstances, call to 'discuss your bill' and of course get put on hold, wait a reasonable period of time, then hang up satisfied you have done enough and with a record you made a reasonable attempt

Dummy up and stack the chips.

Maybe they'll correct it later.

Don't feel bad about it, because they surely have a number of other annoying fees, and they probably let you listen to terrible recorded music for some time while periodically reminding you that your call was important, and a representative will be assisting you shortly.
May the cards fall in your favor.

Say nothing, or it's possible they will make the same mistake and debit you twice.

Put a reminder note in your calendar to contact them in about 30 days and change. Then, after the adjustment correcting it appears in your next statement you can tell yourself you would've done that, and point to the plan to do so in your calendar by way of evidence to yourself.

+1.

a) You didn't earn it;
b) More so, you know that it isn't yours;
c) Do you take what you know isn't yours, or
d) do you do like most base people, which is to just make a grab and take the stash until otherwise caught or corrected.

I'm betting on the latter, (concerning most non-exceptional average people), that Base human nature consistently wins over higher instinct.

Just about never fails.

My guess is that they won't catch the double refund. They were probably both input as a correction in favor of the customer. End of story.
