I have 100 year old general store ledgers, a
pile of them. They tell the price of everything
a patron bought. Food was not cheap 100
years ago if you consider their wages. For
instance, oleo (margarine) was 35 cents a
pound. You can find it today around a dollar
a pound if you buy the 3 pound container.
Sugar and flour, same thing. $1.30 for 1
pound of sugar, you can buy it today for
$1.50 a pound in 5 pound bags.

Same with utilities, very expensive 100 years
ago compared to income. So much for the
'good old days.'

"Coffee shops" (pot shops) are closing and the term is being eradicated though pot is still freely available.
.

Yes, the legalized dope thing backfired bigtime.
Just like it will here.

I know, I KNOW, I shouldn't, but:

Do enlighten me, please. How exactly did it backfire big time?

Health is good since children do not go to school at young ages and mix germs all over the placce.

This sentence is absurd for all kinds of reasons. Let me leave it at one fact: School is manadatory from age 5-6, mean years of schooling is >12.

The rest of your musings are anecdotal, over-generalizing and wildly inaccurate...

Why do I even bother?

" So much for the
'good old days.'

My Dad lived thru the depression. Told me he rented a house and had no money for firewood so they burned all the inside doors, the bannisters, every other step, even every other basement rafter. When I asked what they did next, he said " We moved "

I was teenager in early 50's. Ever time some old fart would say something about the good old days, liver was a nickle a pound or some shit like that, Dad Would say. YEAH I did not have a nickle then, and neither did you. These are the good old days. He was right about that, well if you were a white Dad, that's for sure.

Get you son a high school diploma or an honorable discharge, a union job at the shipyards, auto plant, grocery store, etc.. Then , if he handled his money, he could a house, new car, wife could stay home and raised the kids. Boy, are those days gone forever !

My dad joined the Navy in 1933 and got
out in 1945. Ask him about it and he'd
say 'What Depression?'.

Think of all the fun he missed :
In the U.S., recovery began in early 1933, but the U.S. did not return to 1929 GNP for over a decade and still had an unemployment rate of about 15% in 1940, albeit down from the high of 25% in 1933.

He sent 90% of his pay to his parents, the
Navy took care of everything else. It was
a deal lots of guys had. Stay home and work
the farm or join the service and send the
money home. My dad was one of 4 brothers
and they all joined the Navy, 2 of them became
career officers.

My dad used to brag he had a medal not even Eisenhower had. It was for hand-to-hand combat with the enemy.

That's why I was not that afraid of jail as a kid. Because I knew he would be waiting to kick my ass when I got out. LOL
