Quote: RonCOne of my two favorite George Strait live concert songs...
Ok, that right there is a good example of a modern artist keeping it country. It is possible; I wish there were more like him.
To continue on this modern vein, you have to include Alan Jackson. Any good song usually takes a good 3 or 4 listens to draw you in and get deeper. This song had me by the third verse, and by the time the bridge played, I had tears in my eyes.
Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down to Georgia
Willie Nelson - On the Road Again
George Strait - All My Exes Live in Texas
Reba McEntire - The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia
Clint Black - Better Man
Johnny Cash - Boy Named Sue, Ring of Fire
Randy Travis - Forever and Ever Amen
David Alan Coe - You Never Even Called Me by My Name
Alabama - If You're Gonna Play in Texas
Kenny Rogers - Coward of the County (and The Gambler, of course)
George Jones - Ol' Red
Tim McGraw - Don't Take the Girl
Now, I need to start making a Pandora station :)

Is there a difference between, "Folk" and "Country"?
Country makes you sorry you're a drunk who
beats your wife. Folk makes you sorry you
dropped out of school in 8th grade and married
your 1st cousin.
Quote: rainmanI don't do country but here is my selection. :)

I don't have this in my car, but it reminded me that his album Some Gave All is one of my favorite albums of any genre. Give it a listen if you have a chance.

Sometimes one's personal life provides the inspiration.
Only 7 George Strait songs, and ZERO Vince Gill? I realize Vince may not be everyone's choice of listening though, but man I loved to hear him sing.
Interesting that George Jones and Waylon Jennings both have Ramblin' Man songs. Technically, I think you owe one more song, unless they are two different songs with the same title?

There's always that one guy... ;)
I may have doubled a song. And I know I included songs where the cover is my favorite version and omitted it from the creator's list. And I know I skipped and/or missed a ton of greats. Hell, I don't think I included a single female artist except for Reba. So that "one more song" could include Dolly, Loretta Lynn, Tanya Tucker, Tammy Wynette, Barbara Mandrell, Wynnona, Jo Dee Messina, Lee Ann Womack, June Carter, etc and so on. Trust me, I got a lot more than one ;)
But I did try to include as many B sides and rarities as I could, hence listing so much that you'll never hear on the radio (Hank III, Corb Lund, Drive By Truckers). And many songs are super famous but I dislike them (Ring of Fire). But if you pop these into your iPod, you'll get a full picture of everything country music is supposed to be. They're songs that tell a story. They keep to format. It's everything that you, personally, can relate to. Dog dies? Sure. Wife left? Sure. Want to beat the S#$% out of someone? Yes. About to die from drug abuse? Yup. Found the woman of your dreams? You bet. Proud of your son? It's there. Love your country? Value hard work? Do you enjoy the gift of all that's around you, the gift of life? It's all in country music. Good, bad, fun, silly, it's there.
It's just better. All that's coming out now is substance free, sugary, pop music. Pop is fine. But it should be in addition to, not in place of.
You want one more, I'll give you two. Two weeks ago I lost a cousin and childhood friend within days of each other. And country music just #$%^ing nailed it.
And I am a big sucker for any song with a slide guitar. Love the sound they make.
