To some of you, this ride is nothing. I weigh 275 lbs and not in the greatest of shape. This ride was very grueling for me. I am proud that I was able to do this and not die. However, being a couple of fat guys we did stop in a costco for free samples and we each grabbed a roll of sushi from grocery store. The app that I use stops timing when you are not riding so the total time is ride time and not trip time.

Hehe. That would be like burning 3yrs of caloric intake in 2hrs.

yeah I am not sure what that is all about. I think it is because I didn't have a weight entered into the app. I didn't know I could add it. I just did but cant figure out how to get it to resend it to my email.
fwiw, I feel like I burned that many. I can not believe people run more than this. That is just crazy talk.
it also says 17.3 oz burned fat and 207 gal of oxygen used.
That's gotta be a wash, amirite?

I believe that the reported dietary "calories" are kilocalories, or thousands of thermal calories.
So I guess for all intents and purposes kcal is just a cal.
That means based on the app I burned 3782 calories today. I ate approx 890 so I am still -3000. Sounds like enough room for Mcnuggets and still be negative.

I'm 6', 204, and a lifelong athlete. I rode my bike 20 miles two weeks ago and it killed me. And those 20 miles were over the span of 5 days =p
Keep it up.
Quote: onenickelmiracleHate to say this, but one thing about bike riding, it's bad for men's health and you should buy a wide seat if you don't already have one.
ohh yeah my ass was hurting at the end. I told my bud I was going to end up with hemorrhoids by the end of this ride. We rode by a sporting goods store and I was going to look at seats but we were 14 miles in and I just wanted to keep going. I will gladly DRIVE a car to the place.
Quote: beachbumbabsTrust me, those racing seats hurt women, too. I didn't have a car of my own til I was 24; rode my bike everywhere.
I told him today that I was going to get a small bucket seat with a back. I am sure they have them. If not, shark tank here I come.
He said it was easy.

I would guess your neighbor has calves like a 5 year old oak tree.
Does your tracking app have a name?

Hehe. That would be like burning 3yrs of caloric intake in 2hrs.
Which is 2200 Calories ... or avg dietary intake in USA for one day.
Fat burned? Your body decides that. I don't know of any "switch".
Oxygen ? More important is perentage of oxygen saturation as you exercise and while resting.
The little infrared thingie they put on the contralateral index finger when taking your blood pressure.
It only costs about twenty bucks and you used to have to have a pilots license or a third class medical certificate to get one, but no longer.
And cycling to go buy donuts is better than driving to get donuts. You are entitled to relaxation and rewards in life so don't punish yourself for not being constantly exercising and eating nothing but sprouted mung beans or something. Normal diet, normal exercise, normal alcohol intake...the weight will still come off. No need to obsess about it.

I am not sure I would even want to watch naked people on bikes.

I wanted to stop watching but was hooked
and endured it to the end. It was like watching
a car wreck in slow motion. Leaves nothing
to the imagination. Over 200 pics in the slideshow.

OMG!! That just made me laugh out loud at my desk. Keep up the good work.
I also almost got into a fight or got shot. We were riding down a narrow side street in Homewood. Anyone from this area knows that a white guy on a bike in homewood is pretty risky. Some guy pulls up behind us pretty close. We were going about 20 on a 25mph road so it's not like we were going super slow. We came up to a stop sign with no cars coming the other directions so we rolled through it. I know we are supposed to stop and I generally do but since we could see all directions we just went through. He also rolled through the stop sign right with us. About 50 feet past the stop sign there was some extra room for parking so we moved over so he could pass. He gunned it past us and slammed on his brakes right in front of us. My buddy almost ran right into his car. He was in a.. wait for it...........
So anyways, he starts yelling at us how bikes should be outlawed and we were all clogging up the roadways and taking away lanes. I yelled back a little until you could tell he was really angry. We decided it was best to just turn around and ride the other way. We peeled out while leaving the scene. I was trying to get my phone to record everything but that was fail.
ETA: I don't know why my image won't copy with the route. Makes no sense to me.
Quote: onenickelmiracleI would try riding in a park. It's too dangerous riding on roads with the possibility of being hit by a car. Get a brand new helmet too if you don't have one.
Most of our ride was on trails along the rivers but we were stopping at a bike store to see about getting a new seat.

hey wait, was that a jab at me or ONM? (assuming from the driving thread)

It was at onm from the driving thread discussion with axiom.
Congrats on your bike rides btw. My longest was a few months ago at 35 miles. I've ridden to work every day but 2 days this summer. It's 6 miles each way and only takes about 5 minutes longer than 5 miles driving! After you start riding more your butt will become used to it and it won't hurt anywhere near as much when you go on longer ride.

OK I thought so, just wanted to make sure it wasn't to me cause then I would have to have a comeback and I didn't have one.
I was reading a lot last night about the set up of the seat. I am going to play around with that tonight. I never really adjusted it so I won't be surprised to find it completely set up wrong.

I've noticed this on short trips. If you can go off road, you can make a shorter trip by bike than car sometimes.Quote: wudgedIt was at onm from the driving thread discussion with axiom.

I did a 31.9 ride on Sunday. I was very happy that my ass did not hurt at all.
Our first leg was from my house through Pitt campus and into Schenley park. It is only 4.6 miles but by car at 5pm it takes 25 min. We did the bike ride in under 25 minutes.

Hey GWAE, let's start a gamblers' biker club here :-) :-) I too did a ride on a bike path (see map below), which is a very small section of the Delaware & Lehigh Path (165-miles-long).
When you drop by my neck of the woods, I'll show you around where the good bike paths are, such as the above :-)

I just read about the accident outside Vegas. 5 killed.
So sad.
Its dangerous out there. I used to be a bicycle commuter. Many close calls because cars are always in a hurry

What’s the deal with many bikers thinking of they’re driving on the road that road signs (namely stop signs and frequently red lights)do not apply to them?

I followed all rules
Biggest danger during my commutes is major intersections. I would get off my bike and press the button to cross walking my bike.
I had a lot of close calls because drivers ignore pedestrian right of way when making a right turn on red.

I’ve been in Vegas for 10 years. When I first arrived I planned on getting a bike. After a few weeks of navigating the roads in my car...the idea of biking went into the dumpster. Between the bad drivers, inattentive drivers, IMPAIRED drivers and a fairly large population of reckless drivers...no chance am I sharing the road with them on a 2 wheel.
This was a BAD tragedy. God speed to the victims. It’s too late now, but I also would question the wisdom of being on a 75 mph highway while biking. It’s legal here...but I don’t think it’s a good idea. This crash actually occurred pretty far outside Vegas on 95 south going toward Searchlight, NV.

They tried to be really safe. They had a chase car protecting them. Unfortunately the winds were high so they got behind the chase car to cut down on wind
