This is not surprising. People are deadbeat losers. Plus, they will play the role of a victim and refuse to take personal responsibility for their situation.

And it's going to get worse.

Biased report. North Dakota has a higher per capita income and a smaller percentage of people below the poverty level than Nevada.

I too, think this is misleading. Although I didn't read the whole report, I suspect a lot of people look at the numbers and say well, of course.....gambling. Although gambling may play a part, I would tend to think it is less about gambling and more about Nevada and particularly Las Vegas, being among the worst hit areas during the economic downturn. Nevada and Las Vegas were near the top in two critical categories, foreclosures and unemployment rate. That is going to mean a lot of people in debt.

Whatever you might want to think it is, it can't be about being "poor" as that term is defined by any common metric:

List of U.S. states by poverty rate:

Quote:

United States average 12.6%

17. Nevada 10.6%

20. North Dakota 11.2%

Here's the totally scientific DrawingDead metric, which I assure you is 100% reliable, because I just told you so:

About eight or nine years ago (during the middle of a historic boom period) I was looking for a second vehicle and went shopping for a used car in the Las Vegas metro area from private sellers. While they still had their cars to drive and look at (for the time being) and they were out of any initial purchase financing, none of them had the title. All of them would need to complete any final deal at the car loan sharking joint to get it out of some month-to-month rollover of a payday loan type hock. When I say "all" I mean each & every, with exactly one exception out of more than a dozen I checked out. I've been around the block more than a few times with used car shopping before, never have bought new & I'm not a young guy, but never ran into so much of that before in other places.

And every single one of the sellers I met (save one), who were generally in fairly "nice" houses (if you like suburban cul-de-sacs) and were apparently reasonably well employed (as they were quick to insist on telling me), had some stupid three minute bullspit story they were eager to make me listen to about how this really wasn't at all what it obviously was. Annoying because I really didn't and don't give a scat about their issues and had heard the story six times already... But they apparently just had to do it, so whenever I went as far as getting the info to run a CarFax I had to pretend to listen to the horsepucky while they did this weird little mental/verbal gymnastics routine to convince themselves that they were convincing this stranger that they weren't what they so clearly are.

But, I think this is great, because it makes Southern Nevada a great place to shop for a used car and stuff, if you don't mind just a little extra legwork & you bring your MP3 player & earbuds.

And if you listen to our Governor here in Texas we have the strongest economy in the nation. Texas sure is dark on that map. The collections map and the poverty map. I don't think he gets out much.

Believe it or not, but those two idiots moving from other states are still raising the intelligence level of the Nevada. Sadly, with all of the decent paying service jobs in the state, there isn't a big incentive for many people to try and educate themselves.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

There are some similar comparisons that pop up where I'd join in complaining that it is likely to be at least somewhat misleading. I think this sort of thing gets funky when the "rate" of something that includes a lot of visitors doing it is compared to the number of residents, especially when a non-trivial fraction of those many visitors come with the burning desire to do lots of douchey things that defy not only the ordinances of Clark County and the statutes of Nevada but also the laws of Galileo & Isaac Newton, after they've been told everything "stays in Vegas" and they've been enjoying the complimentary cocktail service enough that they've come to believe in the magic immunizing properties of neon lighting. Not likely to be terribly relevant to the daily life of someone in Summerlin or Spanish Hills or even a working class part of east Las Vegas.

But this one I buy, comparing residents to residents, and because it happens to agree with what I'm already inclined to think about a significant number of my salt of the Earth neighbors.

Irresponsible people move a lot and one
of the places they move to is Vegas. When
I lived in SoCal my neighbors were constantly
changing, never had the same one for more
than a year. I've heard the same said about
Vegas.

Those kind of people tend to abuse credit and
move on, where people in the East tend to
stay in one place for great lengths of time.
The map confirms that they are lower on the
poll. Texas has a lot of transients also, a lot
of people moving there.
