I'm saying that if you took the average 13 year old kid form the 1940's and put him VS a 13 year old kid from 2014. the kid from 2014 would run circles around the kid from 1940 and have him pissing in his pants in every aspect.

Kids (and people in general) today have unprecedented access to information, but they don't use it to make better decisions. Instead, they continue to smoke, believe in God, and vote imbeciles into elected office. Our technological advancements have been incredible, but people are still people.

the 2 things you mentioned other then, vote imbeciles into elected office, have went down.

I know kids are far more savvy and know more about life in general then kids from the 70's and before.

I'm not entirely disputing your contention, I just think it's overstated. I view human progress as cyclical with a slight, almost imperceptible upslope.

I will sit down with anyone of you and tell you more about the u.s than you can tell me about canada. your education system sucks.

Canada wants to come in talking smack about the United States? Please tell me that's a joke.

You are pratically an American territory to the north. If we decided to invade, I'm pretty sure your horse mounted police, and navy made from canoes couldn't put up much of a fight against our jet fighters and real soldiers who don't consider maple syrup a viable energy drink. But don't worry we won't, cause frankly we aren't dumb enough to want to move north to colder climates. Skiing to work isn't the American way of life, we like our cars fast (sorry, bobsleds just don't do it for us), our woman toned (no polar bears please), and our liquor good (without the taste of reindeer piss).

In all seriousness, go USA in hockey today! The women's gold medal prelim ended badly yesterday, so the men need to capture the gold today!

It's only the semi in the men's today. Winner plays Sweden or Finland.

As for a previous post, ontariodealer, claiming that Canada won the war of 1812... I think you'll find that was a tie (no over time or shoot outs). Except the Native Americans lost.

You are correct, I was getting ahead of myself. In the USA v. Canada skirmish, it seems like a lot bigger than a semifinal.

Oh, it's pretty huge up here regardless. I know people who'd be happier beating the USA than winning a Gold.

Judging by the reactions to the come back win yesterday in the Ladies final, it'll be insane if it happens today:

That would be like going up to Bill Nye and saying you're better/smarter than him because you know more things about his life than he does about yours...

On the education argument, it's clearly a case of "standing on the shoulders of the giants that came before". Of course we could run circles around our grandparents in science and technology. Most of this stuff hasn't existed for the majority of their lives. But I hardly equate that with "intelligence".

Our forefathers took a rough and rugged landscape and created an industrial, economic, and military superpower the likes of which the world has never seen. They made that. From nothing.

We can't even maintain it.

Who's the dummy?

And concerning US v CAN,...

B9, this I believe was your original post (as it pertains to current vs old smarts):

With the access to information we have nowadays. I have a feeling kids will far exceed the intelligence of the kids in the "good old days". They also won't remain stuck in the "good old days" Fatter yes dumber no.

In theory, they should, but in reality, they don't. It's no different than people repeating the same mistakes throughout history over and over again.

Here's part of an 8th grade test from 1912. I doubt anyone on this forum would ace the complete exam.

This test is made artificially difficult because it is about a century old. What is important today will, for the most part, be unimportant 100 years from now. This test is focusing on memorized facts and lacks any critical thinking. In the current world there is much less value in memorization than knowing how to find the facts and combine them in critical thinking. That is why your comparison is invalid. We don't teach children how to use whale blubber for oil anymore because the skill is obsolete. It is nonsensical to say that folks who know how to do antiquated skills are "smarter" because they have those skills. Similarly, virtually no one who took that test in 1912 ever knew how to use a smart phone, but that does not inherently make them less smart.

This is often how many old people feel, that's probably due to getting old and bitter or being stuck in the past. They think EVERYTHING the young do is dumb.
kids then played with a stick for hours, now they play with I pads and the internet. I wish some oldies would find a stick again and leave the internet to the kids they bitch about, but no they are doing what they complain kids are doing.

If you do some research you will in fact find that kids are smarter today then years ago.

I would guess that in raw intelligence kids today are smarter because there have been advances in prenatal and postnatal care. Historically, large numbers of pregnant women behaved in ways we now know reduce intelligence in kids (smoking, drinking, and lack of vitamins). There are far fewer kids who don't go to school today as compared to the past. These are incontrovertible facts. While we don't have a controlled study, I would wager for the reasons I stated, on average children born since 1990 are in fact smarter than those born before 1950.
