Even if 99% of passengers are polite, all it takes is 1 loud idiot, and on a flight with 200 passengers, that means there could be 2 idiots. (Hopefully they'll be sitting next to each other.) Unlike a train, bus, or subway where a passenger has options to move about, an airline passenger is trapped in a seat, especially if there is turbulence.
On the other hand, airline passengers must endure a plethora of unpleasant indignities, so maybe this additional one won't matter much and there is a solution: just invest is some good headphones.
What do you think?
I'd be happy to see them relax the rules to only include those tasks since they are quiet and don't disturb other people.
Quote: AZDuffmanThey will not be able to chat for hours straight, I doubt the phones would work for more than circling the airport. The cell companies may disable this because one phone on a plane will lock on to a lot of towers and tie up the system.
It's likely the cell phones will have to go through an antenna or other constriction on the airplane rather than just roam. Any constriction point like that means a revenue opportunity. I believe the hope is that the airplanes will make it prohibitively expensive to use the system onboard, and the phones won't work otherwise. Possibly satellite phones will function independently.
Do you have a link to this information? It was to my understanding that they already relaxed the guidelines when it comes to be able to read e-books, play games and watch videos but not when it comes to talking on the phones.Quote: renoThe FAA is considering relaxing a ban on passenger cell phone usage during airline flights. The libertarian in me loves freedom and hopefully, most passengers will be polite and considerate of their fellow passengers. But the realist in me is worried about the idiot who chatters nonstop for 4 hours- loudly. (Seems like cell phone conversations tend to be louder than face-to-face conversations.)

I was under that impression as well.
LOTS of miss information going around here today.Quote: Beethoven9thI was under that impression as well.

Dose anyone know why you have to open your window shade while landing and taking off?
Quote: AxelWolfBTW.. I simply mentioned this to the stewardess the other day and asked when this would take affect on that particular airline, she was not to happy with me, and stated some regulations. I swear she was going to take away my phone and call homeland security.

The window shades are about checking the wings and airframe for ice, flap settings, or anything else unusual. It's for the co-pilot or flight engineer to come back and look if necessary, less likely a flight attendant asked to do it, without alarming people by insisting on the window shades up right then.
Is it possible to listen to ATC transmissions on every airline? I used to listen to these for class and it's great practice. Not that I'm a controller now... but I've been jammed up in the hiring system.
Why do you have to return your seat backs and tray tables to the full upright position?Quote: beachbumbabsThe window shades are about checking the wings and airframe for ice, flap settings, or anything else unusual. After reading your explanation it didn't ring true to me, however that may be part of it as well. So, I called and asked a friend who used to work as a flight attendant. He, yes I said, HE. In case your wondering, yes He is Gay, I think 90% of male flight attendants are.Quote: beachbumbabsThe window shades are about checking the wings and airframe for ice, flap settings, or anything else unusual. Anyways, He claimed the inside of the plane lighting should be the same as outside when taking off and landing. They even had to adjust the cabin lighting to the same as the outside when possible, bright during the day or off at night. so people eyes could adjust to the outside incase of an emergency. He also said if the shades were open and there was an emergency, crews would be able to see better if anyone was left on board the plane.
So the flight attendants don't have to do it ..lolQuote: teddysWhy do you have to return your seat backs and tray tables to the full upright position?
I'm sure thats for safety reasons, I doubt you want a tray table in your face during a crash
He probably has his standardsQuote: tournamentkingJust recently I took a cross country Delta flight, and the announcement said we could now use our Nintendo's and other electronic equipment, except phones for phone calls, while in flight, but not during take-off and landing. I don't think my male flight attendant was gay. He didn't try to adjust my seat belt.
The window shades are drawn up because in case of emergency evacuation the flight attendants, or for that matter the passengers, will be able to see outside and judge conditions. For example, if you see a solid wall of flame on the left side, you t want to exit the plane on the other side.

Now that I think about it, you're probably right. For desolate rural states with sparse population (Wyoming, Montana, etc.) there just aren't very many cell phone towers.
Quote: AZDuffmanThe cell companies may disable this because one phone on a plane will lock on to a lot of towers and tie up the system.
This seems unlikely. Suppose I'm downtown in a big city and my phone is within range of, say, 4 towers. I seriously doubt that my phone conversation is hogging bandwidth on all 4 towers. (I'm not an expert on mobile technology so if someone reading this can correct me, please do.)
Is that a bad thing?Quote: coilmanI sat on a flight from Calgary to WIndsor where the kid next to me text the whole flight ...from take off to landing

I was told by somebody don't remember who from the airline that the phone company's couldn't get the billing correct as the phone was no longer at ground level, something to do with gps coordinates. This was a while back though when the fee for long distance meant something.
I don't really want to hear people yacking on their phones, but it is comparable to babies crying or jet engine noise. I try to sleep on planes.
Of course the ones they had, where they charged $9 a minute, didn't seem to interfere with anything.Quote: petroglyphHave you ever been on a plane and the steward or a recording says you can't use your cell phone because it would interfere with the planes navigation or electronics? I have. So what happened did they change all the electronics or all the cell phones?

I love when parents let their kids kick the back of your seat repeatedly.
Some C was snapping her gum constantly right behind me on my last flight.
AHHH I get it, he would be annoyed louie was ignoring him for some other boyQuote: Beethoven9thThe texter was Louie Anderson...lol

I seem to be a magnate for the seat kickin little creeps.
Last time I got the red-eye, my plan is to try and be asleep before take off and low and behold there is no one beside me, internal grin.
All the little monsters are at least ten rows back and as I'm settling in here come two of the little monster's and they are packing there own little I-crap game boy noisemaking machines with them. My temperature starts rising and their dad comes up to tell them something?
Much to my surprise somehow I got two kids with manners. I was shocked, shocked I tell ya.
Wham, my head against the window, no seat kickers behind me and I wake up a couple hours later and this kid beside me is using me for a pillow.
They were actually so good, I just pushed him over on his brother and went back to sleep. What are the odds of that?

United usually has them on channel 9. Some other airlines may provide them, but most don't that I know of. However, www.liveatc.net broadcasts via the web pretty much any controller anywhere; you can be online now via wifi, go there, and change channels right along with your crew; they're instructed to do so by call sign each time.

The pinging of some cell phones interfered somewhat with some ATC frequencies; you could hear a nearby cell phone as kind of a low burring in your headset, but it had to be very close by (not the conversation; the electronic transmission of the signal). That's why we weren't allowed to have them turned on in operating quarters, even on vibrate. (Didn't stop management or facilities technicians from wearing them, though; common gripe among us.) The wires for a lot of navigation systems run through the cabin walls from the cockpit back to the empennage, whether it's the controls for the surfaces back there or the recording wires, and the proximity to passengers was a similar problem. However, they exaggerated the problem greatly both in airplanes and operating quarters in order to get rid of the distraction factor and just left it as a rule. There was a particular cell phone spectrum back a while that operated via common radio frequencies (the bandwidths are very close, and interspersed, among navaids and comm channels) in the tuning crystal days that did interfere, but electronics have cleaned up and crystal radios mostly phased out in aviation, and I think that spectrum that overlapped got re-designated. It hasn't been a real problem for about 15 years.

My mom would constantly yell at me, to quit kicking her seat in the car or at church, It absolutely drove her insane . As a kid I could never figure out why she had such a problem with this. Now I get it
