All indications are that the Windows PC Desktop is on the way out. Not only that MS has relegated it to "legacy" status (meaning all newer developments will not take it into consideration, at least until XP, Vista and Win7 finally run out), but lots of people on the tech press either actively advocate for it or passively take it for granted.

I think this is exactly the wrong thing to do. The desktop allows for a great deal of productivity lacking in the alternative, which is the awful, confusing, awkward Windows 8 "Modern" interface (I use the qutoes because MS can't seem to settle on a name for it). So I'm beginning to look at Linux as my alternative.

The question is: should the desktop be saved or not? That is, should MS, or others for that matter, keep developing programs and utilites for it?

Here's a good(ish) article with just a few (i.e. less than 10,000) omissions about the problems with windows 8:

http://www.zdnet.com/windows-8-one-year-later-10-mistakes-microsoft-made-and-how-they-plan-to-fix-things-7000018697/

Seriously, it's worth the time it takes to read.
