Would it be different in another city?
Quote: DocJust don't walk in a group that stretches all the way across the sidewalk.
Absolutely! Some of those people deserved to be rudely shoved (but not into traffic).
i assume everything should be taking the side on the right. i also assumed escalators would work the same way. until the day i tried walking down an up escalator that was on the right side.
Quote: rudeboyoiim pretty big at 220lbs and tall at 6'4". if i see a group of people walking across the sidewalk like that i speed up and lead with one of my shoulders. theyll move out of the way cause im not slowing down.
Somewhere on this site, I posted about one of my co-workers who dealt with porn slappers that way. He was a really big guy, maybe 6'5" and 350 pounds. The slappers cleared out as soon as they saw the truck coming through.

Watch out for escalators and moving sidewalks in Vegas. I think the ones at the Venetian by Mme. Tussaud's is like that and maybe some going into Excalibur. Perhaps others.

im pretty good at ignoring those porn slappers. one time i did stop and talk to them for a sec though. i was holding a drink in one hand and a cellphone in my other hand. they tried to hand me their cards so i had to stop and tell them to use some common sense. does it look like i have a free hand to be able to take one of your cards? why would you even bother trying to hand me one?
Another pet peeve, which I think I wrote about before, is when you come face to face with some other guy walking the other direction, and you're in each others way. Rather than getting into a show of bravado to see who is the bigger man, I'll step aside. Of course, you can tell they get a sense of satisfaction for winning this perceived manhood showdown. I prefer to think of it as an intelligence showdown.

What sometimes happens to me in such cases, is I'll veer to my left, and the other person does too. Not to keep getting in my way, but because we both decide to move at the same time. Naturally I'll move back to the right, and the other person does as well. This usually ellicits a smile or a joke.

I recall an old tale of a very long one-lane bridge on which two drivers met each other head on. One man leansed out of his car window and said, "I never back up for an idiot." The other man leaned out and said, "I always do," and backed up, solving the problem and winning the pissing intelligence contest.

I always get a chuckle out of the following situation: when you approach a set of open double-doors at the same time and in the same lane as someone walking in the opposite direction. You both switch to the other side at the same time to avoid a collision... and then switch again... and then both stop and say "After you"... and then both say "No, after you"... etc.

I've actually run right into 2 people in Vegas when they didn't move. Somehow they both thought I was in the wrong for not moving. No idea how that's right when they could've moved if they didn't want to run into me. One time was at TI between the pirate ships. Other time was somewhere around MGM/Fatburger sidewalk.
i usually handle it with gestures and hand signals accompanied by commentary.
this can range from a polite "keep to your right, please"
all the way up to "GTFO of my way"
depending on my mood and how seriously stupid they are.
Of course I sometimes wind up doing that myself. But that's differnt ;P
This is my life, every day at lunchtime, on Fulton Street. "Where's the Seaport", "How do I get to Park Row", "Can I get to Chinatown from here"Quote: WongBoliving in NYC i encounter the same hordes of clueless tourists who have no clue how to behave on a sidewalk.

I always know where I'm going and how to get there before I start my journey.
Quote: s2dbakerI always know where I'm going and how to get there before I start my journey.
So do I, most times. however:
1) Sometimes I get lost anyway
2) Sometimes I only have a general idea of how to get there
3) Sometimes I very carefull print out several maps before my trip and leave them at home.
Quote: WizardThis is another one of my pet peeves. Traffic, including walking traffic, is supposed to flow to be on the right. Have you ever noticed how moving walkways always are set up that way? Actually, I think the one to the Venetian is the other way, but I assume that is because people drive on the left in Italy.
Nope most of the EU drives on the right. The Brits and Irish drive on the left.
come on wiz, you should know that Macau calls the tune at LVS!
Macau historically followed Hong Kong in driving on the left
because most of the RHD cars in Macau were imported through Hong Kong.
Macau did not follow either Portugal in 1928 or China in 1946 in switching to driving on the right.

Hehe, I had added, "Draft behind a big guy" to the original list, but took it off.
Edit: Came across this image which illustrates that strategy:
Which side of the ship do you want to be on?
Quote: winmonkeyspit3A have a little bit of sympathy for those visiting Vegas from other countries because when I was in New Zealand I kept running into people walking on the right, and nomatter how many times I told myself to walk on the left I kept doing it wrong.
Tourists are killed crossing streets because they are looking the wrong way for oncoming traffic. I wonder if the foot traffic closest to the roadway would be better off facing the automobile traffic, no matter which side of the sidewalk that ends up being?
therefore, the foot traffic closest to the curb already IS facing the oncoming traffic...
and in a country with leftside driving, keeping to the left on the road or sidewalk would have the same effect.
Build the sidewalks so they are wider !
The narrow sidewalk in front of the
Flamingo is riduculous.
Quote: WongBoin America, the general consensus is that you keep to the right, on the road or the sidewalk.

Not all the time. One way streets abound.
