I stand by everything I said, as quoted in the OP. However, I should have added that using a dishwasher doesn't guarantee the dish gets clean. I've seen it many times where a part of a dish didn't get hit. The usual response to that from the other side is, "You didn't angle the dishes correctly." However, I'm too lazy to figure out the correct way to load a dishwasher and I'm surely not going to read the manual.
link to original post

It isn't the appliance's fault the hand washers or the Luddites aren't using it correctly, Can we quantify "many times"?

Unless the dishwasher is ancient, no pre-clean or pre-wash needed. That's the old way of doing things. New technology=new way of doing things. The engineers who design and build them and the chemists who design and make the detergents have made our lives and the drain on our wallets much easier.

Following the instructions makes proper loading easy and efficient. No geometry or puzzle solving skills necessary.

Unloading no more time consuming than putting hand washed dishes away.

The energy required to make a dishwasher, deliver it to the store, then deliver it to your home, then install it, then heat the water to wash each load and the electricity to run the machine is much less than the energy needed to heat the more voluminous amount of water to wash the same dishes by hand. Modern dishwashers also use somewhere in the low to mid single digits of water to wash the dishes. Try hand washing and rinsing and sterilizing to NSF standards the equivalent number of dishes using less than 10 gallons of water.
e cost of electricity to run the machine.

That being said, to each his own.
link to original post

I disagree that unloading, "...is no less time consuming than putting dishes away," as bending down takes non-zero time. Also, plates and bowls are easier to stack at approximately arm level so they can be stacked and put in the cupboard all at once.

By the way, is everyone filling their sink to the brim when they hand wash?

I did a little study and it looks like my dishwasher averages about 60 items per load, maybe 70 if there's a lot of silverware. I earlier said I could do all that in 20 minutes or less. That means I would have to wash AND dry 3 items per minute, or 20 seconds each. That might work with small items such as silverware or small dishes, but things like bowls, glasses, pots, etc. would take much longer. So, I probably couldn't wash a full load by hand in the time I said I could.

There is still some sort of "tipping point," though... Obviously if I have exactly one item to clean, it is faster and more efficient to do it by hand than put that one item in a dishwasher and run a full cleaning cycle. At some point it would take the same amount of time and energy to do X amount of items by hand and dishwasher, but who knows what that cutoff point is... 10 items? 20 items? Then it's just better to use the dishwasher.

The key is to put all of the silverware in the sink right off the bat and let the unmitigated and incomprehensible POWER of Ivory Concentrated Dishwashing Liquid:

https://www.safeway.com/shop/product-details.960031001.3132.html

Cut through all of that tough grime, grease and leftover food particles as you are doing the other dishes. By the time Ivory Concentrated Dishwashing Liquid gets done cutting through all of that jazz with its incomparable authority, as compared to other INFERIOR brands of dishwashing product, you barely even have to look at that silverware, much less forcefully scrub it.

I should also mention that the unparalleled greatness of Ivory Concentrated Dishwashing Liquid will also leave your own hands as clean as the day you were born and the doctor first scrubbed you off, and also soft, if you're into that sort of thing.

There's nothing that cleans, disinfects and sterilizes that should even be mentioned in the same breath as Ivory Concentrated Dishwashing Liquid, which was actually originally formulated by God himself. It was bestowed as a gift upon this Earth, undeserving and fallible beings that we are, in order to cleanse and purify us.

Remember, just because we are dirty and besmirched by the stain of a birth into a world of sin, doesn't mean our dishes have to be.

Ivory Concentrated Dishwashing Detergent-Classic Scent. Get yours today at any number of stores or online retailers.

(Still nothing from P&G, but I'm patient.)

I'm a Dawn man.
I've taken up painting plastic toy soldiers. The hobby standard for cleaning the dirt that accumulates on a forty-year-old soldier is soaking overnight in Dawn and vigorously scrubbing with a soft toothbrush. Dawn works on getting the paint off your hands better than Ivory soap.

It's called Dawn Powerwash Dish Spray. You spray the dish, let it sit for a few seconds and wipe.
A word of warning- I once sprayed a few dishes and forgot to wipe them, leaving the stuff on overnight. The next day I was puzzled by what looked like rat droppings all over my dishes.

It was a theoretical comparison. Obviously I wouldn't run a full dishwasher cycle with just one item.

One of the park residents bought a small dishwasher a few months ago, and I asked him about it today. His glowing reviews convinced me to take a shot at it—$ 303 delivered from Amazon. It's countertop sized, weighs about 25 pounds, and has two hoses for hookup and draining. My biggest concern had been the countertop space, and I hadn't thought about storing it on a shelf like he does when its not in use. when not in use.
I'm thinking of getting rid of my stove as I cook outside or with my air-fryer, and space is at a premium.
I'm trying not to be hasty, but every month I'm trying to upgrade my space. I'm a few months away from buying a portable AC so I might as well splurge now.
Have I mentioned I truly dislike washing dishes?

Yeah, FOR YOU!!!

I just can't believe people are fascinated with the art of dishwashing.

I noticed Drich said no scraping because it comes with a garbage disposal. That's certainly interesting. I'm definitely interested in that since we are actually in the market for a new electronic dishwasher. DIY installation?

We recently put in a new Garbage disposal together, but now my wife only uses it sparingly because she doesn't want to wear it out 🤦‍♂️. Me, I'm like, let's see what this baby will do, where's the chicken bones?

If you are suggesting that women will accept the role of 'the dish washer' without thought, I've got some news for you. Around here I've been able to discover the guys I know are something close to 'all' the the chief bottle washer of the household. I do my share of dishes/dishwasher duty. I do my own laundry. I do all the garbage/recycling work. My wife does vacuuming/bathroom cleaning. I do yardwork/ weeding stuff that the guy I pay misses. I do snow shoveling that the guy I pay hasn’t done. I do most of the supermarket shopping. We each cook a little. She does ALL the gift buying! I make the majority of our travel plans. I am very fortunate. My wife does all the cooking, dishes, and housework. I only have one assigned weekly chore and that is to take the garbage cans to the curb on Tuesday morning. My wife is the second laziest person I know with me being the first. We are fortunate enough to have a reasonable income that allows us to hire people to do all of the things we despise. We have a lawn service, a pooper scooper service, a pool service, a bug service, and a handyman on retainer.

I do enjoy going to the grocery store but my wife doesn't trust me enough to allow me to do the shopping. Since I don't eat vegetables, I don't know how to pick them out.

Trimmed!

Only when I'm there.

As to the vegetables, the delivery (or order/pickup) services do a pretty good job of selecting decently.
Yes, I finally tried out some delivery services. I still prefer to do it myself, but I do recognize that sometimes the advantage outweighs the disadvantages.

I love my mini-washer. The only problem was my plates were ten inches and the max for the washer is 9.5, so I had to buy a few new ones. It's on the other side of a wall from my tv but is not loud. I use the rapid cycle and soup to nuts is forty minutes. The regular cycle is two hours and ten minutes but I have not tried it. It's also got a blast cycle for baked-on stuff.
I use it every day but I'll give it tonight off.
