I don't always text and drive, but when I do I'm also simultaneously watching porn and making knuckle children.

What is making knuckle children?

Look folks, just about every state that has passed anti cell phone use laws has had an increase in accidents.

motorists have to hide the phone and look away from the road longer... hence more accidents.

Same thing with red light camera, lots of tickets, lots of easy revenue...more accidents.

So where are your priorities?

What gets ignored by reactive blanket legislation is that not all people in the demographic behave in the same way.

Some people can drive safely at .05 blood alcohol level. Some people can't drive safely at .000 blood alcohol level. Some people are great drivers who use their phones occasionally, and some people are bad drivers.

I think everyone should have to take a driving test every 10 years in order to maintain their license.

Yeah, I think so, too, but I was hoping he'd have to explain it to me. :)

It just occurred to me...you ignore the little knob (on the standard chess piece ) and it even has the curvy little vertical slash... I always thought the reference was to the mitered hat, but I bet it's the chess piece.

Knuckle children, though? Bizarre.

It's my understanding that the bishops are the ones who like spanking children.

Whatever BAC you're at when you take the test (and pass) is your legal limit! If you can make 5 Twitter posts during the driving test, you'll be allowed to use phone & drive.

Not really. All you have to do is put the phone away and wait until later to read/send text messages. It shouldn't cause any additional accidents at all. Blame the problem on irresponsible "drivers", not on the very sensible laws.

Now as for those folks who agree that texting and driving shouldn't be mixed, I have a little gadget that I find quite helpful. It is my hands-free blu-tooth speaker. Like previous ones I have used, this allows me to voice-dial calls, answer incoming calls, and hear everything just fine with both hands on the steering wheel. (Of course, there is some justifiable sentiment that I shouldn't have such conversations at all while driving because even that can be a distraction.)

This hands-free device, combined with my phone, offers a feature I hadn't had with previous units. I'm not completely certain whether it's a feature of the speaker, the phone, or the combination. Anyway, the device(s) can recognize when they are connected and interpret that to mean I am driving (unless I tell them otherwise). When I am in "driving mode" and a text message comes in, I am not even notified. The system sends an automated reply text that says that I am driving and will get back to the other party when I can. I have plenty of opportunity to do that when I am not behind the wheel. Great system.
