Casino: The Imperial

The Imperial opened in 1992 and operated until 2010 when it changed ownership and was renamed Big Jim’s Gambling Hall & Saloon before closing for good in 2014.

This was a grand Colorado gaming establishment that embraced the old west. Their chip designs reflected that tradition. They issued several $1 designs over the years – all ceramic Chipco’s.

Their standard $1 house chip was elaborately designed with the crown signifying it as the class of Bennett Ave.

In 1992, to celebrate the town’s centennial, The Imperial issued this commemorative $1 chip which also noted Cripple Creek as the World’s Greatest Gold Camp.

$1 Imperial commemorative 1992 chip

In 1996, they issued a set of 5 chips with various poker hands. Each denomination depicted an increasingly better poker hand. The $1 shows an ace-high flush, the $2.50 shows tens full of sevens, the $5 shows quad kings, the $25 shows a seven-high straight flush, and the $100 shows a spade royal.

In 1997 for their 5th anniversary, they issued a 4-chip set. This one depicted various slot machine results from 3 cherries on the $1 chip, 3 BARs on the $2.50 chip, 3 7’s on the $5 chip, and 3 crowns on the $25 chip.

Also in 1997, The Imperial decided to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1947 movie Marshal of Cripple Creek. Yup, you’re getting a movie poster in the Casino Chip of the Day thread.

This was a 4-chip set with each chip depicting a character from the melodrama. I think that the gold panner on this $1 chip was the best of the series.

I love everything to do with all these sets of chips. I wish more casinos would put 1% of the effort into their chips that this casino did.

Casino: J.P. McGill’s

J.P. McGill’s casino opened in 1997. They are now known as just McGill’s Hotel Casino. This Irish themed casino is one of the largest in Cripple Creek. They closed all of their table games many years ago and now offer 280 slot machines. They are operated by Triple Crown Casinos which also operates the two adjacent casinos: Midnight Rose and The Brass Ass Casino.

They issued two different $1 chips: a standard house chip as well as a dated version for their 1997 grand opening. These could routinely be found on their black jack tables. They also issued 60 5-chip numbered sets of the dated variety.

The ceramic Chipco chips are wonderfully designed, but the denomination seemed to be forgotten and added after the fact as an afterthought.

Casino: Johnny Nolon’s

Johnny Nolon’s casino opened in 1991 and was one of the first Cripple Creek casinos to open once gaming in the state was approved.

They were also the first to use clay Paulson chips, which were the industry standard in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Their first issue $1 chip was a white hat & cane mold with a small inlay depicting the Johnny Nolon logo in black with a red $1 denomination. Not a very eye-catching chip.

$1 Johnny Nolon’s 1st issue chip

Later that same year, as Chipco ceramic chips took hold among Colorado casinos, Johnny Nolon’s produced this 2-sided version. The logo on each side differs slightly, but the chip is still an improvement over the original clay chip.

It’s been many years since Johnny Nolon’s has had table games. Like other small Colorado casinos they now only offer slot machines; making these $1 chips a thing of the past.

Casino: Johnny Z’s

Johnny Z’s casino opened in 2010 was originally listed in the Casino Chip of the Day back in 2013, but only their $5 chip was pictured. This casino, like the Four Queens and Palms in Las Vegas, were notorious for issuing a large number of house as well as limited edition chips in all denominations to take advantage of casino chip collectors. The Four Queens has issued 35+ different $1 chips and counting, while the Palms has issued almost 40! Johnny Z’s has issued 21 different $1 chips, but fortunately for the wallets of collectors, they seem to have ended that practice in 2017 before closing their doors for good in 2020. Below is a complete rundown of these chips. Enjoy!

Their 1st issue house chip, produced in 2010, was a clay Paulson hat & cane mold with 3 colored inserts and a small logo center inlay. This high quality chip should have been sufficient for years to come and even today, in 2024, would be in perfectly fine condition for the rigors of Colorado table games.

Two short years later, in 2012, Johnny Z’s decided to abandon Paulson and move to Chipco.

$1 Johnny Z’s 2nd issue chip

Later that same year, Johnny Z’s decided to get into the limited edition chip game. Their first LE was this 2nd Anniversary chip.

In 2013, GameOn, formerly Chipco, produced this Halloween chip in a quantity of 200. Most of these limited edition chips had production runs of 200 or 300.

$1 Johnny Z’s Halloween 2013 chip

Later that year they released this Holiday chip.

$1 Johnny Z’s Holiday 2013 chip

With the success of their limited edition chip program, they decided to add St. Patrick’s Day to the calendar in 2014. These four days; Anniversary, St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, and Holiday, would become a mainstay. While the $1 chips alone would not make the limited edition chip program profitable, keep in mind that Johnny Z’s produced these same limited edition chips in $5 and $25 denominations.

$1 Johnny Z’s St. Patrick’s Day 2014 chip

Next up for 2014 was this 4th Anniversary chip…

…followed by their Halloween chip….

…followed by their Holiday chip.

Just to add one more chip to 2013, this promotional chip was also issued. $5 and $25 denominations were also made. These were given to guests and could only be used at the tables.

…then their 6th Anniversary chip, but returning to a 1-sided design.

$1 Johnny Z’s 6th Anniversary chip

It was now that Johnny Z’s decided that their 2nd house rack needed to be replaced after only 4 years of use, so this new design was issued.

$1 Johnny Z’s 3rd issue chip

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program of limited edition chips…

$1 Johnny Z’s Halloween 2016 chip

…followed by their Holiday chip in a surprising 2-sided design.

$1 Johnny Z’s Holiday 2016 chip

They continued with the 2-sided design in 2017 for this St. Patrick’s Day chip.

$1 Johnny Z’s St. Patrick’s Day 2017 chip

This 7th Anniversary limited edition chip would prove to be their last. Perhaps the casino chip collecting community had had enough? Perhaps the limited edition chip program wasn’t as profitable as it once was? Who can guess? But if you’re a $1 casino chip collector you’re likely to have them all.

The Lilly Belle’s casino opened in 1992 and closed in 1994. Since it was mainly a slot parlor, like most early Colorado casinos, the only issued this limited edition design. The graphics were the same on their $5 and $25 chips too. This is easily one of the classic old Colorado Chipco designs.

Casino: The Lodge Casino at Black Hawk

The Lodge Casino at Black Hawk, commonly called The Lodge was previously listed in the Casino Chip of the Day back in 2013, but only the $5 chip was shown. This casino has a couple unique $1 chips worth mentioning.

The Lodge opened in 1998 and is still in operation today. They issued a $1 Grand Opening chip. These were serialized with each chip’s number engraved into the ceramic. Most numbered chips, especially those engraved ones, will have different artwork on each side. That wasn’t the case with this limited run of 500 Grand Opening chips.

In 2000, The Lodge issued this 2nd Anniversary limited edition $1 chip with very unusual artwork. 2000 pieces were produced.

Then, in 2021, The Lodge replaced their entire ceramic chip rack with this inexpensive plastic model.

Casino: Lucky Strike at Pete’s Place

Lucky Strike at Pete’s Place, formerly Pete’s Place, opened in 1995. The casino has long since closed, but not without leaving behind a noteworthy set of $1 chips for collectors.

The first set was a beautiful 5-chip stackable set of $1 chips released in 1996. Each chip depicted a different playing card comprising a spade royal flush. While both sides of the chip had the same artwork, the edges did not. When properly stacked, the edges of the chips displayed each of the four suits as shown below.

$1 Lucky Strike at Pete’s Place 5-chip stackable set

$1 Lucky Strike at Pete’s Place 5-chip set when stacked

In 1997 they released a second 5-chip set of $1 chips. Why so soon after the 1996 set? Perhaps they underestimated the number of chips that would walk out the door and into the hands of collectors. Whatever the reason when this new set was ordered they kept the artwork the same, but replaced the stackable edge design with the year, 1997, in black. Did this make the new set less collectible? Maybe, as when the chips are displayed in a frame the edges cannot be seen. But this didn’t stop many collectors, including me, from picking up this new set.

Casino: Madam June’s

Madam June’s opened in July of 1992 and closed 4 month later in November. Madam June’s, as the name suggests, was reminiscent of an old gold mining town brothel. Aside from the name and décor, there wasn’t much else to the casino, which was predominantly slot machines with a lone black jack table in the back. At least the black jack table necessitated the need for casino chips. This showgirl raising her cocktail glass is one of the more difficult $1 chips to locate.
