My draft plan is to fly to Vegas on Monday 4/17 for a one night stay, picking up a rental car at the airport. We will drive to Stateline on Tuesday and mostly rest/loaf on Wednesday. Some time on Thursday morning, we will check out of the hotel and drive a clockwise loop around Lake Tahoe for sightseeing, stopping at Grand Lodge then exiting the lake loop and heading to Carson City and the Max. After that, it's the Nugget in Sparks followed by a turn south to Pioneer Crossing in Yerington then El Capitan in Hawthorne, hopefully getting there some time near when they open the blackjack tables. After that, we will head on down to Tonopah to spend Thursday night and visit the Mizpah Club. Friday we will drive on down to Las Vegas for the Spring Fling on Saturday and stay in town until Tuesday or Wednesday when we will fly home.
That's lots of driving for a couple of geezers, but I think we can handle it.
Airline fares are still not clear, but it appears that all of the Las Vegas and Stateline rooms will be comped, so I will only pay for the night in Tonopah. It is also not yet completely clear which nights I will have to pay resort fees for "comped" rooms.
I have two comped nights at Harvey's Tuesday and Wednesday, except that it appears that I must pay $46 in resort fees and $5.98 tax for a total of $51.98 for two nights. Not free, but I think I can afford it. I'll also pay a total of $33.03 in resort fee and tax for the comped previous night in Vegas.
I got a bit frustrated, though, when I made reservations for the rest of the trip today. The place I planned to stay on Friday and Saturday night back in Vegas (before and after the expected Spring Fling gathering) shows both of those nights as being comps for me on a promo. Unfortunately, after I select the two nights and click to select my room type, it shows that all of the room categories are unavailable. I called and was told that they are sold out on Saturday.
What I don't understand is that Thur-Sat the previous week are shown as sold out, but (according to the web site) the Saturday of interest is not "sold out" -- it just doesn't have any rooms of any type available. ???? I eventually booked just Friday night (totally free) and hope that Saturday night will become available as the second night of my alleged two-night comp. I'll have to change hotels to collect on multiple promos, but I also booked Sunday and Monday nights totally free.
Quote: PokerGrinderResort fees really irritate me. I don't understand why they can't just include them in the price of the room. It's like I can book Harrah's in Las Vegas for $23 a night but the resort fee is $32 lol. Insanity. In Reno I think I'm going to stay in a non casino hotel. I found a couple nicer ones for about $40 USD.
Yeah. Just make it $55 a night, dump the idiotic "fee" and be done with it. No complaints that way.
Ok actually I lied. I am going to post my chips that already have a chip of the day post and tomorrow I will start with the first one my 16 new chips that I have to post.
On March 22, 2014 Tomspur posted his chips from City of Dreams Casino. My chip is the same as his except I took a picture of the opposite side that is not in English as well as the English side. I didn't actually explore this casino much as I spent all my time in their Pokerstars poker room. Very nice room and the restaurant had insanely expensive food that I didn't order.
Up next is MGM Grand. My chip is a new one and much nicer than the one posted by Tomspur on March 23, 2014. I spent almost no time at MGM because they don't have a poker room and we were on our way to dinner.
Next are my chips from the Venetian. I collected a $5 and $25 chip, the reasoning I will get to in a second. My $5 chip is the same one that Konbu posted on March 27, 2014. I also collected a $25 chip.
The reason I took both is we saw $5 Venetian chips in play at Sands (not to be confused with Sands Cotai, two different casinos) as well as $5 Sands Cotai chips but no $5 Sands chips which is why I took a $25 Sands chip. We went to the Venetian and they only had $5 Sands Cotai chips in play. We spent about 20 minutes checking every open table with no luck finding the $5 Venetian chips that we knew existed. At this point I took a $25 chip so I would have a Venetian chip FROM the Venetian. We also returned to Sands to get the $5 Venetian chip even though it was collected at the wrong casino. I plan on using the $25 Venetian chip to display as my chip from the Venetian since I actually got it there. I know, I am nuts.
Last chip(s) for this post are from SJM or Sociedade De Jogos De Macau, S.A. Konbu originally posted his $10 Jeton that he collected from Oceanus Casino on March 26, 2014. I collected the same Jeton but from Casa Real Casino where we were staying. I also collected a $5 chip that was available, it is not a Jeton but a clover chip mold. Konbu was right when he said that all the SJM casinos use SJM chips... except one! I will get to that when I post it as a chip of the day though. I did visit all the SJM casinos except Ponte 16 on the off chance that they had different chips. I like walking and exploring so this was a reason to do just that.
Tomorrow I plan on starting to post my chips from Singapore.
City: Sentosa, Singapore
Casino: Resorts World
Today's chip of the day is from Resorts World Casino on Sentosa Island, Singapore. Since I basically did a chip of the day already in my thread "Grinder Backpacking Asia" here is what I wrote:
"Later in the afternoon I took a Grab to Sentosa Island to visit the casino but I'm an idiot and forgot my passport. I couldn't get into the casino and the taxi line was 2 hours long. I walked around the island looking at what Resorts World built which is basically an island with a casino, shopping galore, universal studios theme park, tons of expensive restaurants and a bunch of attractions that all cost a lot of money. Oh and about ten hotels of course. I found the subway but the line was almost 2 hours long too they said. I kept walking for about 30 minutes until I hit beach station where the line was the same. I said screw it I guess I'm waiting, when an employee says the bus line is empty. Done deal I walked ten minutes to the bus since at that point I just wanted to get off that damn island. The bus took me to Waterfront station where I took a subway two stations to my hostel. Yikes stupid mistake."
"Yesterday (the next day) the two Canadian guys and I met up with my buddy Patrik that I met in KL and went to Sentosa Island to check out the tourist traps... I mean attractions lol. We took an uber there (all these übers are so cheap) and yes I made sure I had my passport this time... "
"Adam and Ryan (Canadians) took the bus back to Singapore and Patrik wanted to join me in the casino. We took the bus back to the casino since it's much quicker and went in. We looked around a lot and I explained all the games to Patrik since he never had been in a full on casino before. Apparently Slovakia only has small card rooms. He kept asking questions about the games, house edge, strategy and I love talking about all that stuff so it was interesting for both of us. I explained the gamblers fallacy to him and he was so intrigued by the mindset of gamblers. We watched Baccarat, Roulette, the big wheel and BJ/Pontoon each for a while. I found an empty Pontoon table with a $25 minimum so I played to get my chip. I only played one hand. I bet $25, got 8,8 into a dealer 2. I split and got a 2, I doubled and got a J for 20. The second hand I got a Q for 18. The dealer had a 2 up and pulled a 3, K and a 3 for 18. I pushed the second hand and won the double. I was done lol. I got my chip and left up $45. Patrik and I watched random tables being played for the next 40 minutes (I was getting bored but he was having fun) and then finally left the casino."
I apologize if this doesn't read well as a CotD, if it doesn't I will not copy anything from the other thread for other chips. Today I felt this was fine seeing as I have spent most of the day hugging the toilet and I have no energy. Pretty sure I got food poisoning last night.
The chip is the same as the red one I posted yesterday from SJM, obviously the $5 one not the Jeton. It is a pink clover mold chip with the Resorts World logo, the location and the denomination in SGD hot stamped in the middle of the chip in black. I am surprised a casino as lavish and amazing as RW Sentosa would cheap out on their chips. ($10 chips and higher were nicer chips, they didn't have $1 chips) Seems like a weird cost to cut when you have spent billions on the rest of the casino. Just my two cents, or $5 I should say.
Aaand I'm looking forward to PG's posts as well.
The MoGH chip guide says that the Hoover Dam Lodge Casino (former Hacienda) is slots only. In contrast, CasinoCity.com lists a variety of table games for that same casino. To complicate the issue a little further, this January 2015 article (yes, two years out of date) says:
Quote: Las Vegas Review JournalThere will be about 300 slot machine games once the casino is completely remodeled in the spring, and DesChamps said there are serious talks of adding live gaming to the mix.
So does anyone know the status of (potential) table games at the Hoover Dam Lodge? Did the "serious talks" become reality so that CasinoCity has it right?
Quote: PokerGrinderDoc I called and they don't have table games, only slot machines.
Glad you're not so lazy as I am.
City: Singapore, Singapore
Casino: Marina Bay Sands
Today's chip of the day is from Marina Bay Sands Casino in Singapore, Singapore. This casino is the most amazing one that I have ever visited. I visited a few times during my 6 days in Singapore and ended up winning about $400 SGD. The table limits are insanely high here. The first day I was at the casino they had a few BJ tables at $25 but most were $50 and much much higher. The next time that I visited the limits were all $50+ and this was in the middle of the week. They have 610 table games including blackjack, baccarat, money wheel, craps, 3 card poker, pontoon, roulette, sic bo, Singapore stud, three pictures and live poker although it was closed while I was there for Chinese New Year. They also have 2300 slot machines but I am surprised by that number as I would have guessed quite a bit lower.
I took a few pictures inside the casino while being told not to. Damn Canadians never listen :)
As for the chips, I decided to keep a $1 and $5 chip and I am not quite sure why other than I wanted to I guess. The $1 chip is a very basic white chip with an engraving around the chip's outside. The centre has the casino name, denomination and logo hot stamped in black on the chip. The $5 chip is dark red/purple with the same pattern around the chip as the $1 chip has but it is coloured yellow and not engraved. The denomination is also on the bottom left of the chip in yellow. The chip has a plastic inlay with the denomination in black, the logo and Sands in red while the rest of the casino name is in black. The gold lines in the background of the inlay are quite shiny and really give the chip a look of class.
Are there a lot of smokers? It seems the open design would allow smoke from the floor to drift to the floors above.
How was your experience with currency conversion there? Was it better to do the exchange from Canadian to Singapore dollars at the cage, or at a different place?
Quote: AyecarumbaVery nice! Is it the same on both sides? Konbu's chips had Chinese on one side and English on the other.

Yes they are the same on both sides. Some of my Macau chips have Chinese writing on one side though as you will see later this week.
The casino wasn't smokey which was quite nice.
I brought all my currencies that I would need from Canada to Asia with me. I have a currency mart in Winnipeg that gives a much better rate than any bank ever would or could give.
At what level do the rectangular "plaques " start?
I rather expect that I won't ever need any Asian currencies, because I believe I am unlikely to ever make it there. It appeared almost certain that I would be making a visit to that continent back in 1969, but I was quite happy not to go then. The farthest I got out of the USA that year was Juarez, Mexico.Quote: PokerGrinderI brought all my currencies that I would need from Canada to Asia with me.
Another misdirection of the thread (based on planning my April trip)....
I just noticed something bizarre. Way back in November 2012, when rdw4potus posted his chip from Stockman's Casino in Fallon, NV and immediately followed it with his chip from Stockmen's Casino in Elko, there was the following reply:
Quote: DJTeddyBearIt's interesting that these two, apparently, unrelated casinos should have almost identical names.
It gets more interesting than I had noticed. It seems that the MoGH chip guide page for the casino in Fallon includes a $5 chip saying "Stockmen's" -- yes, with the "e" clearly on it -- but also saying Fallon, NV.
How could a chip manufacturer and the casino itself, not to mention the approval process from NGC, ever let such a thing happen?
The reason I stumbled across this is that I am considering replacing the slot tokens in my collection with true chips (cheques) where possible -- $1 chips if they are available but those oh-so-expensive $5 ones if it's really necessary. I just think the chips look much better in a display, so I'm sussing out the possibilities. My Stockman's souvenir is a token.

"Stockmen's" is the name of the place in Elko:

There are no other listings close to those two on the NGC report published in January. Maybe chips from one place found their way to the other, and ended up in play?
Quote: Ayecarumba"Stockmen's" is the name of the place in Elko

Agreed. The bizarre thing is how did Stockman's issue/use a chip that says "Stockmen's" and "Fallon", as shown in the linked MoGH page?
Quote: DocAgreed. The bizarre thing is how did Stockman's issue/use a chip that says "Stockmen's" and "Fallon", as shown in the linked MoGH page?
Was it maybe originally called Stockmen's?
There is a "Stockmen's Automobile Rental Company" in Fallon. Perhaps they gave out these chips as a promo for discounts on a car rental?
According to the Nevada Gaming Control Board Location Report, the Stockman's Casino at 1560 W Williams Av in Fallon applied for its non-restricted license on 01/06/1972.
According to the MoGH page for that casino, the "Stockmen's" chip for Fallon was issued in 1970.
If there was once (as in 1970) a Stockmen's Casino in Fallon, I don't know how to find out about it.
City: Pahang, Malaysia
Casino: Casino De Genting
Today's chip of the day comes from Casino De Genting in Malaysia. Now what part of Malaysia exactly I am not 100% sure. I listed it as Pahang because I believe that is the part of Malaysia even though google maps lists it as Genting Highlands Pahang, Malaysia. Genting Highlands is I believe what the resort is called but Pahang is the area that Genting Highlands is in if that makes sense. Now the website clearly says Resorts World Genting but the chip says Casino De Genting, as does MoGH. I decided to go with the chip. Feel free to correct me if you feel this is wrong.
Anyways I stayed at the hotel (one of the hotels) for one night and paid 54 Ringgits. This was my write up of my visit to the casino, a very short visit.
"The casino is weird they give you 28 Ringgits for the electronic roulette machine for signing up. I won 3 Ringgits off that. There are no TITO's they give you a card which the money goes on like a gift card and you cash it out whenever. Then I checked out the table games, lots of roulette (10 Ringgit min inside), Baccarat (50 min) and no BJ at all but they do have a game called Pontoon which looked almost identical to BJ and the min was 100 Ringgit. I played 2 hands of baccarat and won 130 Ringgit plus my chips I keep. I didn't play much cause the limits were really high. I cashed out and left. "
4.4 Ringgit = $1 USD
I spent the rest of my time hanging out with three Indonesian girls I met on my way there. I had a ton of fun on my visit to the casino resort and barely gambled. If I hadn't had people to hang with I would have been thoroughly bored at this casino.
The chip is a Bud Jones (MoGH has it listed as BJ) dark red chip with 6 sets of 4 white edge inserts or 24 white edge inserts depending on how you want to look at it. The centre inlay is blue with the Resorts World logo at the top of the inlay. "RM" and the casino name are in black and the denomination is in gold. RM stands for Ringgit Malaysia.
Edit: The inserts are white but have been stained by the red chip.
As for the name of the area, perhaps Genting Highlands is right because without the resort it would be nothing but an unoccupied forest.
I'm really not sure cause the area is called Pahang whether the resort was there or not. Google lists it as Genting Highlands Pahang, Malaysia.
City: Taipa, Macau
Casino: Altira
Today's chip of the day is from Altira Casino in Taipa, Macau. Altira was formerly known as Crown Casino until 2009 when Melcro Crown (owners of City of Dreams Casino, Crown Casino and casinos in Australia) opened the Crown Towers Macau and changed the name of the casino to Altira. We were in this casino for about 10 minutes, played one hand of Baccarat and lost either 300 or 500 HKD between Eric and I. I have misplaced my notes so I am not 100% sure. We didn't stay long because the limits were huge and we were in a hurry to make a dinner reservation.
Even after 7 years of the name being different, Altira Casino still uses chips from when the name was Crown Casino. The chip is a brown with three white edge inserts. Macau is around the centre inlay three times in white. The centre inlay is red with the Crown logo, name, chip denomination and cash all written in white. The chip is in excellent condition, I assume it has been in use for about 15 years.
I was in a hurry yesterday morning because my wife and I were heading out on a quick, one-night trip to Harrah's Cherokee. I played strictly craps, while she played penny slots. I was up after the first session; lost most of that gain in the second session, and went into the negative zone in the third session of the day.
I went back into the casino this morning only to find that at 8:30 A.M. the minimum wager had been increased to 300% of what it had been last night. I did not feel that desperate to either win back my losses or contribute more. Besides, my wife had won more at the slots than I had lost at the table, so we just came on home a little early. Had to be back for an appointment this afternoon anyway.
Last summer I posted a review of the various Paulson hat and cane chip designs, including the rare Inverted Hat and Cane. I commented:
Now I, too, have encountered an IHC logo chip, while I was ahead of the game yesterday afternoon. However, I didn't keep it as a souvenir. You might say that my cheapskate nature prevented that. I just took a couple of cell phone photos to share here. I didn't have any way to photograph a UV image and didn't even have my UV flashlight with me to inspect the chip.Quote: DocI think we only have had three chips of the IHC design presented in this thread. Member/collector rdw4potus posted here a $5 IHC chip from the Lake of the Torches Casino in Wisconsin, and the Wizard posted here and here $8 IHC chips from the Venetian, which were their 2012 and 2013 Chinese New Year commemorative chips. Maybe some day I'll encounter an IHC chip for my own collection.
So here's the chip, with its own explanation of why I didn't keep it.
There is more than the logo and denomination to make this chip unique from others I have in my collection, so I took a second photo to show that.
That smaller chip is a different design than the one I posted back in 2013 at the end of a long rambling post, and I don't know when they changed. It is also different from the chip that rdw4potus posted in response to mine. I'll add a note to my earlier post to reference this one and the additional chip images.
Is it purple? It appears to be a peacock blue on my monitor.
Quote: PokerGrinderDoc you spelt Malaysia wrong in the index.
Was this intentional? :-)
As for color, the chip may have been very slightly darker than it shows up here. The two images I posted show different tones for the same chip. The table games folks probably refer to these chips as "purples", but that might be because no one refers to their chips as "blues". This was just a cell phone photo taken on the table top in the food court, and you can see in the second photo that I was having trouble with sun and shadows.Quote: AyecarumbaIs it purple? It appears to be a peacock blue on my monitor.
Here is one different reference: The MoGH chip guide page for Harrah's Cherokee does not include this IHC chip, but it does show the $5 chip that I just posted. I think they made a typo in describing the edge inserts, calling them "3 Blue 3 Gray 3 Brn". I think the "Gray" was supposed to say "Green".
You can compare their image of the $5 chip to my second image, focusing on the blue edge insert. Then note that, if anything, the big chip is lighter than the edge insert on the small chip.

Shirley it was intenshunul.
Seems funny, but it hasn't even occurred to me to collect a chip in the new style. I suppose I should do that. There's no name change or anything, but I might as well have a current chip from the casino that is closest to me.

Is spelt a Canadian thing? I know it's a British word. Do Americans only say spelled?
Typically only heard in Quebec and some parts of Nunavut.Quote: PokerGrinderIs spelt a Canadian thing?

Really? Why do you think only Quebec and Nunavut?
City: Cotai, Macau
Casino: Studio City
Today's chip of the day is from Studio City Casino on the Cotai Strip in Macau. I visited this casino sandwiched between visits to Sheldon Adelson's casinos Sands Cotai and the new Parisian. The Casino is beautiful both from the inside and out. We walked around for about 10 minutes before playing one hand of baccarat and losing. We grabbed our chips and headed over to the Parisian where sadly they use Venetian and Sands chips. The casino opened in 2015 and cost $2 Billion to build. The building has a figure 8 ferris wheel connecting its two hotel towers.
The chip is light brown with 6 white/red/white edge inserts. The centre inlay looks like it has production lights crossing on it. This is also the logo that is present beside the casino name. It says on the chip that Melcro Crown owns the casino. The opposite side of the chip is in Chinese.
Is this the casino with the Gotham City theme?
It is interesting that it specifies "cash". Are there others that say, "credit"?
Quote: PokerGrinderReally? Why do you think only Quebec and Nunavut?
It was a smarta$$ comment somewhat related to a population base not focused on the English language. (My "sense of humor" is not widely regarded very highly. Or even recognized, in many cases.)
City: Taipa, Macau
Casino: Galaxy
Today's chip of the day is from Galaxy Casino in Taipa, Macau. This is THE Galaxy Casino not to be confused with all the casinos that Galaxy owns and has a partial name share. This casino is massive! Also the limits are enormous, the lowest table we could find was $300 HKD. The Broadway Casino is attached to Galaxy by a skywalk but uses the same chips so we didn't bother to visit. We lost our one bet at Galaxy and left with $25 chips after checking over a 100 tables and figuring out that they don't have smaller chips in play. They do have a $5 chip on MoGH but for the life of me I couldn't find one.
The chip is green with 8 white/yellow/white edge inserts. Around the inlay it says Galaxy Macau and the denomination twice in white. The centre inlay is a shiny silver foil like appearance which has "Galaxy Macau" in the foil as you can kind of see in the picture. The casino logo, casino name, some Chinese lettering which I assume is the name and the denomination are all present on the inlay.
And as for those characters that you cannot read, isn't that the reason we keep Konbu employed as a part-time consultant on this thread? (Of course, the pay is only measured in degrees of abuse.)
Quote: DocWell, you are right on that threshold we have talked about for so long....

My my I have no idea what you are talking about Doc. What threshold might you be referring to? 😂
As for lower limits I would say try to find a Sic Bo table. Limits are much lower and maybe you can put a $10 HKD bet on specific triple for a 180 to 1 payout at something ridiculous like 16% house edge!
Knew we could count on you!Quote: Konbu... 澳門銀河 ....

I looked at something like that but I had absolutely no idea how to play that game. Also we didn't mind gambling a bit.
City: Macau, Macau
Casino: Sands
It is my pleasure today to post the 1000th chip in the chip of the day thread!!!
I just want to start with some cool numbers:
This thread has nearly 1.1 million views! There have been over 6400 posts made in this thread and this March 15th will be the 5 year anniversary of Doc's amazing thread. The thread covers 30 countries and that doesn't even include the cruise ship chips. Doc I have said it before and I will say it again, thank you for this thread. I love it!
Today's chip of the day is from Sands Casino in Macau, Macau. Sands Macau opened in 2004. This is the first casino outside of the SJM chain that we visited and we ended up here three different times. Sands Casino is enormous and beautiful as you would expect from the owner of the Venetian. We ended up playing $300 HKD minimum BJ as the limits in all of the Adelson's casinos are quite high. We won our one hand and then proceeded to not be able to find the $5 chips we wanted. This is when I realized that I most likely was going to end up with a bunch of different denominations of chips since some casinos don't carry small chips. At Sands the problem was that the only tables that had $5 chips either had Venetian chips or Sands Cotai chips. Sands $5 chips apparently don't exist so I took a $25 Sands chip. We also came here for the free shuttle to the island where Venetian and other casinos are. The alternative is a $15 cab ride.
The chip is a blue with 4 light blue edge inserts that each have a half moon under them. Sadly the picture makes the edge inserts look green when in fact they are baby blue. The chip is made by Bourgogne et Grasset as noted by the BG on the left hand side of the centre inlay. The centre inlay is white with the casino name, logo and the chip denomination all in gold. The other side is the same except Sands is in Chinese, I am assuming Mandarin.
