Sorry to hear about the need for surgery. In answer to your questions:

(1) "Any idea how many more you can fit?" My calculations say I can fit 624 chips on the black insert, the area where the main array is located. That means 174 more, or about the number I collected in the past four years. I think that adding that many more now would require a good bit longer than four more years -- low hanging fruit and all that.

(2) "Ideas on what you will do when you have too many?" I can expand the array onto the boarder area, where I now have the gift chips and extras, and fit a bunch more. The glass cover that goes over the chips has some cushions fixed to it around the border area, to support the glass weight rather than having it rest on the chips. Those cushions would break up the pattern if I extend into the border area. If I were to use that area and fill it up, the only rational idea I have is to seek to regain my sanity and quit collecting additional chips.

(3) (not really a question) "I have trouble looking at the close up of your display cause my OCD says that the chips should all be turned the same way lol." My son shares that opinion. I asked him which direction they should face -- toward my chair, toward visitors, etc. -- and he couldn't decide, just that he thought they should all be the same. I prefer the semi-random orientation because (a) from any angle at all, you get just as good a view as anyone else and (b) it takes no effort at all on my part to keep them all "straight."

Thanks I appreciate it, just minor surgery to fix a fractured L5. Sounds worse than it is.

1) No worries for quite a while then I guess. Seeing as in the last 2 full years you have collected 55 new chips you have some time to figure out a solution :)
2) Quit collecting? I do not support this in any way!
3) I see your point here, I think that I would have them facing your chair as you are the one that is most often looking at them.

State: California
City: Highland
Casino: San Manuel

I was at the San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino casino this weekend, and noticed that they have two sets of chips in play. I pocketed what I thought was the newer design (because the chips with this design were generally in much better condition), but after checking the COTD entry, it turns out to be the other, plainer one, that I should have kept for posting... bummer.

They did have a Craps table ($10 - $500; but there was small print about a max payout. I think it was $3,000 but I am not certain.) In any case, the game is conducted with cards. Two cards, ranks A-6 come out of a single shuffler, each corresponding to a die face. Suits are ignored. No dice cubes anywhere. The cards are placed back in the shuffler prior to the next two cards appearing. The table was staffed like a regular table with two dealers (handling line and place bets), a stick (responsible for calling "no more bets", handling the center bets, and announcing the total) and a boxman (who pulls the cards from the shuffler).

According to the dealer, there are 13 cards of each rank in the shuffler. I wonder if this game is vulnerable to counting as cards come out of the shuffler prior to the previous (or maybe even six or seven previous) set(s) being re-incorporated?

Not likely, since:

Did I misinterpret something about the way you described the shuffler being used?

Although the two cards are dropped in the back of the machine after each call, rather than being stacked in a discard rack, it doesn't appear that the whole pile in the shuffler is scrambled before the next two cards appear, because the next two cards pop out almost immediately. I suspect the discards are stacked within the machine for some period before being mixed, because the shuffler looks very much like the multi-deck ones found on a blackjack table.

Edit: And oh yes Doc, I am glad to hear from you. I assume you are high and dry despite the heavy rain in your state.

Yes, we are doing fine here in the Charlotte, NC area. We do need to hear some feedback from rdw4potus, since they are having a bunch of flooding down in Columbia, SC where he is located.

I am going to be taking the chip collecting trip that I was talking about. I tried to keep this one less crazy as my last couple trips have been a little nuts.
Day 1 4 Bears, Grand River and then stopping in Deadwood for the night. I am hoping to add 2 more chips here that weren't available last time at Gold Dust and Mineral Palace.
Day 2 Prairie Wind and Rosebud. I was originally supposed to also visit Lode Star but their tables aren't open on Mondays.
I was able to get 2 free nights at Harrah's Council Bluffs for Monday and Tuesday.
Day 4 Driving to Harrah's Kansas City where I got another 2 free nights. Gotta love Caesars properties. I will be visiting Isle of Capri Boonville this day.
Day 5 I will be driving a small loop of Oklahoma casinos, these will be my first chips from the state. I will be visiting Downstream, Quapaw, Buffalo Run, Stables, Wynadotte Nation, Indigo Sky and Grand Lake.
Day 6 On my way home I will be completing my collection of Iowa casinos. Wild Rose Jefferson, Isle, Riverside, Catfish Bend, Par-A-Dice, Jumer's, Rhythm City and Isle of Capri. Hopefully find a cheap hotel on expedia around Bettendorf.
Day 7 Wild Rose Clinton, Diamond Jo, Mystique and Lady Luck then on my way home.

I am excited because this trip will put my collection over 400, yes I am a nerd. Also this will bring the chip thread over 900 chips.

Yes, I agree. Have a safe and fun trip and enjoy your hobby. Of all the casinos that you mentioned, I am fairly certain I have only visited two: Harrah's in North Kansas City and Isle of Capri in Boonville. I wonder how much total overlap we have between your collection from 400+ casinos and mine from 450 (or 451 after this coming weekend).

I think I've been to all of those casinos except the ones in SD. And maybe one or two of the newest Iowa properties. Boonville is small and cramped and smoky and smelly. Many of the other Isle and Lady Luck properties in the area are surprisingly nice...don't let that set your expectation for that place.

That is funny I have never thought about that. Well we have at least Harrah's North Kansas City cause I have been there before. I am just using them for their free bed. I would be interested to see how many we overlap with, I would say other than Nevada that it wouldn't be that many. I have yet to collect any from MS, LA, FL. Also I have barely any from NM or AR. I think that most of our CA chips don't overlap either. Do you keep a list of chips that you have collected?

Well maybe I will make Boonville a hit n' run casino. I hate smelly smoky casinos, they give me a headache. I think I have been to one or two Isle casinos before and I remember them being nice.

We overlap on 213 chips, of which 140 are from Nevada. This is exactly how I thought it would be. Roughly half the chips with 2/3 being from Nevada.
Here is the breakdown per state.
Arizona - 2
California - 6 This one was like I thought we have collected from different parts of the state
Colorado - 19 There are 4 casinos available for you to collect in that area again.
Illinois - 2
Kansas - 5
Missouri - 8
Nevada - 140
New Jersey - 11
New York - 5
Pennsylvania - 2
Canada - 11

OK, so I have Monarch, Saratoga, and Z Casino (all in Blackhawk) on my list of chips that I might get some day. What am I missing?

I think that other than spending time in the casinos -- and possibly the impossibility of breathing at the top of Pike's Peak -- my wife liked our visit to Colorado, so there is a chance she might be willing to return some day. It's not a place that I expect to visit frequently.

It is one that you probably have no interest in collecting because the casino only has poker and slots. The casino in question is Midnight Rose.

Yes. I have been to Midnight Rose and did not collect a chip. Here is where I posted about that, right after rdw4potus posted his chip from Midnight Rose. My same thoughts fairly much apply today.

Yes.

Last time was at the inaugural WoV_Con on June 15, 2011. We ate and partied a little at Main Street Station then walked over to Binion's for poker, where we almost filled a table with our group. I had fun and lost $10. I posted a terrible photo of the group, along with my summary write-up here.

Last poker game before that was in February 2003 at Ocean's 11 Casino in Oceanside, CA. I still had a job back in those days, and I was in CA with a couple of my associates working on a project at Camp Pendleton. We went over to Ocean's 11 a couple of times in the evening, and one night I joined in for some poker, my first of two (maybe 3) lifetime experiences at Texas Hold'em.

No, I don't hang around the poker rooms very much.

I'm planning a trip to Seattle and Vancouver next month and just noticed that we don't have chips posted for several (or more) places. I guess I will have a chance to post it!
I don't plan to go out of the way to collect, so that means of the ones not yet posted, I will visit Skagit Valley, Silver Reef, Swinomish, and Quil Ceda Creek. Also should be stopping at Tulalip and Angel of the wind since it'll be on the way to Vancouver.
OK, maybe I have time on the last day, I can detour down to Muckleshoot and the 2 Emerald Queens in Tacoma.

Casino: Harrrah's Cherokee Valley River

Man, that casino name is going to be a long one to fit into the array block in this thread's index! Fortunately, at least in this regard, this is only the second casino in North Carolina. With that small an index array, I think we can handle it.

I'm not going to post much about this casino, because (1) I have only been there once, and (2) I started a whole other thread here about that visit. I didn't post my chip then, because new forum policies had put me in a foul mood. At that time, we were in the midst of controversy about the new policy prohibiting editing of old posts and what problem that would create for the index to this thread. That crisis seems to have been averted.

The souvenir chip is a ceramic chip, and my unfounded guess is that it came from Game On Chip Company. If anyone has better info, please let me know.

This "white" chip is more blue than white. The white areas consist of a mountain (I mean valley) logo at the top (with the river blued out), the full "resort" name and location in font sizes that get progressively smaller with each line, and the denomination. There are two blue edge inserts intruding on the white rim.

UV light reveals that the Harrah's portion of the name and the denomination fluoresce, with some kind of stripes on top of the denomination. Both sides of the chip are the same.

I really like the new Harrah's Cherokee Valley River chip, the blue and white play very well together. That name however is a mouthful.

I just got back from my trip and even though I had mentioned that I had not planned too much driving... I still planned way too much driving! I still managed 4100 miles in 8 days, I am now recovering. The gambling G-ds treated me quite well during the trip, after everything including some shopping I was up $10 on the trip.
A couple of notes from my trip: First off I hate when casino websites say they are in a town and then clearly are 2-10 miles out of town, that makes it really tough to find them, Second pet peeve is when they don't advertise well on the highway. I don't mind if the casino doesn't want to shell out the cash for signs but if you are going to maybe adding some directions to the casino would be nice.
As I have suggested to Doc, Deadwood, SD is a really neat and interesting town. I stopped there for a night again and remembered instantly why I loved the place. I definitely suggest it to anyone that has some extra time in the area.
I made my first additions to my collection from casinos in Oklahoma. The slot machines in OK make the most annoying noises over and over and over again. Obviously not their intentions but the noise cut my visits shorter. Not good for a casino.
I have a morals question, I think I was right in my thinking but I could be wrong. I was playing at Mystique casino in Iowa. I was playing HU Freebet BJ. I bet $10 dealer deals the cards, He has the A of spades showing and immediately checks for BJ, has it and flips his under card. I immediately said you didn't offer insurance. At which point he realized what he had done and tried to convince me that his face card was showing not the A. I said no, clearly had A showing and he calls over the pit boss. I explain and the dealer pleads that the face card was showing. I said no way and you can check the camera, I know what it will show. The pit boss looking annoyed said well were you going to take insurance. I said well your dealer is showing BJ of course I want insurance. Now here is the moral dilemma, I NEVER take insurance but I have the right IMO to be offered it and turn it down, a option that I was not given. Thoughts? What would you have done?

I have to sort and clean my new chips so I will look at starting to post them later this week.

Being a dealer is a thankless, blue collar, job. You are expecting to much from same. If you want a more professional setting you will have to go to a high limit room where I'm sure they use higher paid and more experienced dealers and pit bosses. These people are dealing with riff raff all day. You don't need to act like you are owed anything. You are in the gutter.

I'm not sure if you are for or against what I did? Btw I dealt cards in casinos for over 2 years so I definitely understand the other side of the table.

I'm not sure either, but was and remain of the opinion you aren't dealing with professionals at a $10.usd black jack table at a venue so described. It's, to me, like giving dishwashers or janitors a hard time when you are given a dirty fork or find a bathroom "not so clean". I think you are expecting too much professionalism and good service.

It isn't like I yelled at the dealer, I asked nicely for the mistake to be fixed. Same as I would if I got a dirty fork or their were no paper towels in the bathroom. I would ask for a new fork, I wouldn't eat with the dirty fork. I am never rude to people for making a mistake while doing their job, but I don't think it is wrong to point out the mistake.

I thought you posted said request was after you knew he/she had a BJ ? I could look, but it doesn't matter. I still say at that venue and your level of play, the dealers are paid peanuts and so they naturally attract monkeys to deal. It isn't a "mistake" IMHO, it's a matter of not caring and just doing the time(work). Cheers mate and better luck next visit/time.

Casino: Wild Rose

Well this thread is as slow as I have ever seen it. We need to recruit some people to go visit casinos on the west coast to keep the thread going lol. I have 8 new chips to post from my trip.

The first one I am going to post is the new casino that just opened up in Jefferson, Iowa. The Wild Rose Casino had a soft opening on July 14 this year and had their official grand opening on August 7. I found it weird that when I went to get a club card the three Wild Rose Properties all have separate club cards that aren't connected to each other. The casino has 14 tables including BJ and Craps, I didn't take a look to see what else they offered. They also have 536 slot machines. I hit and run this casino so I am not sure what else they offer, I was mostly there to get a chip.

The chip is much nicer than the other Wild Rose chips that I have. The chip is I believe a Chipco product. It is white with two edge inserts, one brown and one orange. The centre inlay has a large faded rose in the background. The casino name along with a smaller rose is in the middle, the location in black at the bottom and the denomination in white at the top.

I was there on Thursday (05/11/2015), and noticed they had finally changed from peach/blue/yellow/purple/white/black/grey to a much more common 50c/light blue/red(?)/green/black/grey(?)/?. The dealer said the chips were new that morning, and, given the crispness of the edges, I'm inclined to believe it. Most of the scuffing in the photos (which looks more severe than it actually is) is from being in my pocket with my phone for an afternoon. Interestingly enough, the larger denominations do NOT have the hat-n-cane impressions. Personally, I prefer the look and feel of the old ones. The newer ones, while using colors I'm accustomed to, have that light and cheap feel to them.

I was a bit slow getting PokerGrinder's Wild Rose - Jefferson chip acknowledged in the thread index, but I've taken care of that now. I also appended a note at the end of my San Manuel CCotD post to direct any archive-browsing folks to Venthus's post right above this one. Thanks to both of you for these chip posts.

Yep, the thread has been slow lately, and we really need to get more members making contributions. I also think that rdw4potus and PokerGrinder both need to invest in UV lamps so they can show us what's hidden on all those chips they have shared with us.

How much is a UV lamp? It seems like over the last year that the thread has lost most of its casual followers. Even rdw doesn't seem to come around very often anymore. I won't be posting a chip today, went to see Craig Ferguson (stand up comedy) tonight and now at a wedding social so I don't think that I will be in any shape to post a new chip of the day until tomorrow after football is done for the day.

How much is a UV lamp?

I purchased mine from a Spencer's store at a nearby mall in May 2012 and paid $10.71 including tax. (Yes, I'm nerdy enough to have that info stored on my phone.) Mine is a 13 watt CFL bulb, and I was told that the coated incandescent bulbs are mostly worthless -- give everything a purple tint but don't really fluoresce much of anything.

I checked the Spencer's web site and found a "Black Light 22 watt CFL bulb" for $12.99. Plenty of power -- more than you will ever need for photographing chips. Just screw the bulb into a lamp, place it where you want to photograph the chip, and turn off all the other lights. It takes a bit of trial and error to get the exposure right.

I have no idea what Spencer's might stock in the retail stores these days. There are probably a number of sources around.

Google UV lamp and you can find many listed for under $10 (hand-held, battery operated). They're also useful for sorting gemstones, so you might get a good-quality one from a jeweler tool site as well.

I had this casino on my list of chips to collect and I wasn't sure why I hadn't collected it the last time that I was in Deadwood. I went into the casino and I knew that I had played there before. I sat down, bought in and as soon as I did I realized. The $1 "chip" is a metal token which wouldn't have stopped me from taking one except that the token has no mention of the casino name or location. All the token says on it is the manufacturers name. This is why I didn't collect one two years ago and why this time I decided to collect a $5 chip which I only do in special circumstances.

Mineral Palace opened in March 1993. In the 1800's the spot where the casino is now housed the Gem Theatre which wasn't a theatre but was actually used as a prostitution house. Mineral Palace advertises that they have the most slots in Deadwood with 320 as well they have 6 tables offering, BJ, DD and Three Card Poker.

This chip is made by Chipco. The front of the chip is red with a green middle. The casino name takes up most of the chip, this along with the denomination are in yellow. Hotel and Gaming and the location are in black. The back of the chip is also red with a green middle but you can't see much of the green middle. There are cards in the middle of the chip showing the "Dead man's hand" along with a picture of Wild Bill on the front card. There is a five dollar bill showing the denomination. It say's "Deadwood You Bet" and the casino name in yellow. At the bottom of the chip it says "Raising the stakes Nov 20, 2000" in black. I couldn't find any reference to what this date would mean. It might be when this batch of chips came out but there is no way to find out.

This week got busy and I only ended up posting 2 new chips, I am headed to Regina for a poker series until Sunday so I won't be posting until then.

On November 7, 2000 voters approved raising the max bet in Deadwood from $5 to $100. I think the wording on the chip advertises or commemorates the roll out of the new limit.

I appreciate the postings and write ups, and look forward to the new ones.

Yes, this is the design that I mentioned a few pages back. The yellow $5 denomination was also changed. Personally, I prefer the older design. The new one seems very plain.

Oy that was a bad joke lol.

Very interesting, I am impressed, I couldn't figure out the date for the life of me.

I have just learned from the Nevada chip and token gaming report that Longhorn Casino in Las Vegas is finally getting $1 chips to replace their tokens. I will definitely be heading back to collect one.

I will be starting the chip of the day again tomorrow, I have 6 left to do.

Not that I doubt what explanation was given, but here is proof.

See below:

On November 7, 2000, South Dakota voters passed a bet limit hike from $5 to $100 in Deadwood’s gaming halls, drawing even more visitors to the Wild West Town. Since the legalization of gaming, over one billion dollars in tax revenue has gone to support historic preservation, tourism and state and local governments in South Dakota.

Casino: 4 Bears

I tried to visit 4 Bears Casino almost two years ago on my way down to Las Vegas. My GPS took me down a dirt road to nowhere, I then spent almost a half hour asking directions and looking for it before I eventually gave up and moved on. Not sure if I just gave up or if I still had a lot of driving to do that day and didn't want to waste time, either way I didn't get to collect this chip until a few weeks ago. This time I had much less trouble finding it, turns out the casino is actually 4 miles outside of Newtown, not that any of their signs would tell you that. The main road was closed and the detour happened to lead right to the casino.

The casinos problem with signs extends to their property where they make you think the casino is in one building when it actually is in the first building. Anyway I went in, signed up for a club card to get the $10 freeplay which paid me a grand total of 60 cents, which one more spin eventually got rid of. I played BJ to get my chip, If I remember correctly I was up $50 lost a couple hands and decided to leave with a $20 profit. Sadly all the chips in play have the same colour bleeding problem. Must be a badly made chip because I know these chips are newer because MoGH doesn't even have them listed. So I found the best one and left. The casino opened July 16, 1993. The casino had over 550 slot machines and 10 tables including BJ, Roulette and Craps.

The chip is white with 3 blue edge inserts. The front of the chip has a red circle around the centre inlay with what looks like rope knots. Not entirely sure that is what it is supposed to be. The centre has the 4 Bears name in green/dark green and the location and denomination in the same red that the circle is in, the writing has also bled. The logo above the name and please correct me if you see something else, looks to be a brown bear that has been shot with an arrow in front of the sun that has a red hand on it, not sure what this signifies. The back of the chip has the same red circle but it is incomplete for some reason with the denomination interrupting the circle. The casino name and location are also in red. The picture in the middle is of 3 Indians surrounded by a brown border with writing on it. The writing is not in English, I assume it is whatever language that the tribe speaks. Sadly along with the bleeding of the red on the chip there is also what looks like dirt smudging on both sides of the chip, none of this would come off with a cloth.

Thanks PG! Are the graphics on a "sticker" or are they printed directly on the chip? Does the chip have a finish? I wonder if the bleeding is from a chip cleaning process?

They are printed directly on the chip, I think the chip is made by Chipco but there is no indication on the chip. The chip has a smooth finish. Do you mean my cleaning of the chip? Cause the chip looked like this before I cleaned it.

You mentioned that they were all bleeding, so I wonder if the casino employs a chip washer that caused the color to run. I would be surprised if it turns out to be a Chipco product. They would have replaced the lot when the defective printing appeared. Also, Chipco's usually develop a ring around the rim from stacking, and your chip doesn't appear to have that, despite being several years old.

Oh possibly but I have rarely heard of a casino that actually washes their chips. I do have other Chipco chips that do not have the ring around the rim but you are right most of them do. I would love to know Doc's opinion (he knows a lot about manufacturers of chips) but he seems to be away, maybe on a trip. I don't believe that they were printed like this, I get the impression that the chips looked good at the beginning and something was done to them to make them look the way that they do.

Not on a trip. Got a court case this morning as plaintiff acting pro se. Got my head in a bit of a spin and can't seem to get too focused on the forum/thread. I'll check back in tonight.

BTW, I don't really know much about chips. I just fake it on the internet. This one looks more like a Chipco product than anything I can come up with right now, other than the company that replaced Chipco, and you said this one is several years old.

Casino: Prairie Wind

Ok so I am going to get my butt in gear and try to actually make these next 5 chip posts in 5 days. Been crazy busy which means the chip of the day has been more of a chip of the week.

Prairie Wind Casino is owned by the Oglala Sioux Tribe. I exhausted all my sources but sadly couldn't find a opening date. I visited this casino last month when I left Deadwood. It is a smaller Indian casino with 309 slot machines and 9 table games including 5 BJ, 3 Card Poker and 3 Texas Holdem tables.

I had an interesting experience here, I had timed it out to arrive right when their BJ table was supposed to open at 5 pm. Problem is I used the wrong time zone, I thought the casino was in central time when it was actually in mountain time, so I had a hour to kill. I did my usual sign up for a club card, I got the free play ($10 and won under $1 lol) and they also gave me a 50% off coupon for the restaurant. I hadn't eaten so I decided to use it, that was my first mistake. Their special of the day was a bacon wrapped sirloin and shrimp, I decided why not, how bad could it be? Famous last words! I had the soup and salad bar while waiting for my food. The food comes and the steak is about 1/4 inch thick, no bacon and it is as well done as a piece of meat can be (I ordered it medium rare). I tried it but it was like shoe leather, asked for it to be remade, they did and brought back a new steak equally well done and looked like it had been pre chewed. I tried it and decided to just eat the potato. The shrimp had so much breading on them that after the first one I decided to eat them like peanuts, de-shelling each one before eating them. I felt ill within about 20 minutes, in summary DON'T eat the restaurant in Prairie Wind Casino.

I wasted the last few minutes before the BJ table was set to open and headed over there, the pit was dark... No dealers or open tables. at about 5:10 I decided to go find someone to ask and they said oh sure I will go get you a dealer. Wouldn't it make more sense to have your dealer on the floor rather getting paid to sit in the break room? Well to add to the misery of this place I lost about 80% of the hands for 3 shoes at which point I finally ran away. Let's just say I wouldn't go out of my way to return to this casino.

The chip is made by RTP which if I remember is based out of Las Vegas and the P stands for plastics. I can't seem to find where the company has been referenced already in the thread. They have two series of chips with the same design, the only difference being one has a textured rim and one has a smooth rim, my chip has a textured rim. The chip is beige with a silver inlay. The chip has 8 light blue edge inserts. The chip has a teepee with a couple of trees. This along with the tribe name, denomination of the chip and casino name are all in black.
