And the ironic police see what you did there. Your sig plus leaving out the apostrophe in Women's and ending your question with a period was sheer brilliance.
Well played, sir. Well played.
Oh, and to answer the original question (which I don't find particularly trollish): it's because the vast majority of basketball fans are too used to "above the rim" style, and this just won't be possible for the women's game unless they lower the rims - but then they would have to do it at every level (otherwise all of that training to make free throws has gone to waste), and it's just not cost effective to have backboards that can be adjusted to two different heights in every college, much less every high school, in the country. In part because of this, the three-point line is especially effective.
I think the answer is sexual.
Most guys that are willing to watch any sort of women's sport, will do so on the assumption that they'll see tight boddies and/or jiggling boobs. Not necessarily boobs that become uncovered, but jiggling under the uniform, paired with tight fitting uniforms. The reality is that the athletes have thin, athletic bodies, and/or the uniforms are generally not form fitting.
Somewhat contradictory, but still a good example, is Women's Body Building. They tend to wear tiny little bikinis, but because they are so muscular, there's hardly any erotic bonus in the fact that they are nearly naked.

watched an interview with a female body builder once that showed videos of her in competition. She said it was essential to have a big smile while posing, that the judges just demanded that. There was something about the make-up and the smiling that gave me the creeps. I still get the creeps thinking about it.
Quote: DJTeddyBearWhile Don's response answers the question why Women's BB is less exciting than Men's BB, it doesn't really address the original question.

Actually i dont think it has anything to do with it being a sexual thing. Womens Tennis, Hockey, Softball, etc. is very entertaining. I think Don had a good point about women not being able to play above the rim. It would be like women not being able to take a slap shot, or hit a home run, etc..
Quote: teddysI watched the Baylor-UConn game and it was more exciting than most men's games.
That is one of the funniest things i have ever heard. All that game was a 73 foot women playing against a bunch of 5' 11'' women. That is exactly what Wilt Chamberlain looked like when he played.
Quote: ThatDonGuyMaking this more on-topic to the board: do many (or any, for that matter) Vegas sportsbooks take bets on women's basketball during the regular season? (If not, then what about the Women's Final Four?)
One of my side jobs is inputting stats at basketball games (men's and women's) and I've been doing this for for two years... working the games in general for five. I have never seen lines drawn for the regular season, but two years ago I know that Bodog had lines for every single game in the tournament (it was under the WNBA tag though).
I think the OP is just trolling. Women are less athletic than men, you can't even argue that they're simply "different". Men can jump higher, run faster and grow stronger. This leads to a fundamentally different game that's not nearly as fun to watch. We (the people who staff basketball games) openly mock women's basketball while working.
Also, this is just me, I have a big problem with Title IX and it makes me subtly dislike all women's sports in general. That's a whole different can of worms though.
Edit: I'm a big fan of Women's indoor volleyball though, but it might be because we don't have a Men's college team up here.

Right. For me it's not that they don't play "above the rim". I can go to high schools where they don't play above the rim either, but those boys' games are better than most Women's college games. The gameplay is just not as crisp, not as "in sync". There are way more airballs and bad passes and shots. There's usually no flow..
Quote: poosmellsCan someone explain to me why Womens Basketball is less exciting to watch than dust settling in the corner of a room.
I can't watch any sort of basketball, pretty much the sport I hate to watch most of all the majors. For the most part the only woman's sport I enjoy and enjoy more than the men's version is curling.....
[SPACE LEFT HERE TO INSERT COMMENTS IN REPLIES]
Ok, now why is this? Well, first curling is a percision sport, not about speed, stregnth, or agility. Women could compete with men directly in this sport. It is one of few that way. In some they make outright concessions to women to even it up (golf.) In some there is just no way women would compete head-to-head (hockey.) And some are totally subjective (figure skating, OK there is one I hate more than basketball.......)
The common thread is that the women's version is just a lower-varsity than the men's. It is like watching NFL Europe after the real NFL. People just know they are getting a lower-quality product. There is one more thing about women's sports. Few guys want to watch women play guys games and act like guys. Few women want to watch other women play a sport, they want to watch, support, and cheer for "their guys." They also do not want to see women playing guys team games.
And I will admit, Jennifer Jones is my favorite curler because she is attractive.

Just bustin' his balls. I got to give him a hard time when I can, hoping he'll finally show up to a football game. You know, instead of crying off and missing it like the last one that he claimed he'd make me cry in ;)
Women's B-ball sucks because B-ball sucks. I just can't find a redeeming quality about it. If I could dunk as a senior, what's so fantastic about some 7 foot dude doing it? Totally meh. Add some checking to it, and now we're talking. Prison ball was one of my favorite playground activities.
Women's sports in general I dig. Sure, stuff like the Lingerie Football League is just soft core porn, but the serious stuff is awesome. Softball, Hockey, Curling, it's all good. And that Olympic skeleton rider Amy Williams makes my head all fuzzy. And Ashley Force? Good lord. If I could have just one thing for Xmas...

I went to a high school where the Girls BB team won the state championship. The band played for both men's and women's games, and frankly, my freshman year, the girls team could outplay the boys. The girls were 15-1, while the boys were 2-14. Of course, all our girls pushed 6 foot, where most high school girl teams average at about 5'8, so it was always a bit mismatched. But the team my freshman year averaged 60 points a game, where most teams averaged about 46.
Otherwise, I find women's BB terrible to watch.
I have to question the sportsmanship of this team mercilessly demolishing opponent after opponent week after week. They played Charleston last night and beat them 72-24.
Coach Geno is treated like a king and even has some food outlets named after him at Mohegan Sun. Most people love him, others think he is on a huge ego trip.
I can go to any game I choose but I choose not to.

I played in a hockey tourney last spring and I showed up to find one team was almost entirely girls (only had 4 dudes out of 15ish players). I spent maybe 5 minutes "taking it easy" before realizing we were gonna get killed doing that. I remember rushing at the puck trying to hold the zone while their female forward rushed at me trying to get it out. I had a moments thought thinking I better let up so I don't kill her, but said to hell with that, it's hockey. Next thing I know I'm being propelled off my feet and smashed into the boards backwards. I'm about 6'3", 225lbs all decked out in gear and one of the fastest players on the ice, but that chick not only stopped all that momentum, but reverse it. Violently. I haven't been hit that hard since the biggest dude in the league came to our team.
We lost the championship in OT to that same girl team the next day.
