Holidays are coming. I've been filtering my own vodka
for about a year. I know, the Mythbusters did it and the
'experts' weren't impressed. What did we expect.

I've used a Brita filter, which is OK. Whats much better,
and cheaper, is to buy a pound of food grade activated
charcoal on the net. Take an empty 1.75 vodka bottle,
and with a funnel put an inch and a half of the charcoal
into the bottle. Fill with a cheap vodka like Gordons, I
use Kamchatka. Leave an inch breathing space at the
top. Put a lid on and shake it good. I make up several
bottles at once and shake all of them several times a
day for a week. The more shaking, the better. Put them
in the freezer overnight several times after shaking.

After a week, filter thru cheesecloth. You'll have a vodka
as smooth as Grey Goose or Ketel One. You'll have taste
and no bite, for 1/3 to 1/4 the price. It doesn't taste like
Grey Goose, its as smooth as GG. Makes great martini's
and is good on the rocks. And its fun to drink your own
stuff. You can reuse the charcoal 3-4 times, its very
economical.

I drink vodka straight, room temp, with a pure water chaser.
I can tell the good stuff from the cheap stuff instantly.
Believe me, this really works.

Just what impurities are you removing?

Alot of people do their own versions of expensive products. Make your own Frapacino or something. Cost savings can be impressive but nuisance factors are involved also. Beer, wine, root beers, ciders, cheesecakes, lotions from generic recipes are cheap but time consuming.

It mostly removes fusel oils. This isn't time consuming,
leave the bottles where you walk by them every day
and shake them as much as you like. Its really worth
the time. If you mix vodka with soft drinks, you won't
notice a difference. Its in martinis and straight drinks
where it really shines. Leave a bottle in the freezer and
pour into a glass thats been in the freezer. Good stuff.
