after all the time spent learning the odds on craps and bj, i played craps at el cortez ($3 min, 10x odds) and lost $240 in a couple of hours. then lost $120 playing bj in about 20 minutes with $10 hands. my girlfriend and i were a bit blue at this point so we said fuck it and played wheel of fortune. in 30 minutes we had won $375. an hour later we were up another $200.
got wiped out at the tables and saved by the slots... go figure!

You see what knowledge of mathematics and good discipline will get you!
PS: Keep that girlfriend!! If she was game for abandoning knowledge and skill while instead choosing sheer whimsy, she will be fun to be with.

Learning the odds just tells you which games to play.
Practice is the only thing that makes you play
better.

Well, you know what this means, don't you?
Screw the odds, and just play slots! :)

The same thing happened to me in February, mathematical variance can be very annoying sometimes.

Its only annoying when it goes the wrong way :-)!
Gotta love it when those dice just can't seem to roll that seven for 45 minutes.......ahhhhh, variance.......that's why we play the games despite the negative EV!

Lesson #2
Bankroll Management - Was there a point in your craps session when you were ahead? Was there a point when you were at the tables, that you decided to chase your losess? It is important to be able to walk away for the sake of bankroll preservation.
I'm glad you were able to recoup via slots. Don't rely on it to happen everytime though.

i was NEVER up in craps. i was out $120 in about an hour and called it. then we walked around for a few hours and went to another casino to look for a little heat and lost another $100. i did crawl back up to even and started pressing my bets but the table went south again. i quit after another $120 loss
i've played a lot of bj in my time and know perfect strategy but got zero luck. i think i lost 9 out of 12 hands, even missing on two double downs in 11's. it was brutal.
with slots, we played $1 WOF (2 credits) and hit $200, $75 and $100 bonus spins all within 40 spins. once i even hit the bonus spin two spins in a roll. i thought the machine was broken!! then i had two losing runs where i didnt get a bonus spin for $120 worth of credits each time. that brought me back down to earth.
so variance killed me at the tables and helped me at slots. fortunately slots had the bigger payouts when i won but i know it's certainly a loser in the long run...
anyways, thanks to all of you for the tips and advice. great community you have here
