If you are looking to blast off a fully automatic gun or just rent a handgun The Gun Store should be fine. If you are looking for something more let me know.
Quote: WizardI've been meaning to get a membership to a shooting club between the Red Rock casino and the Red Rock Recreation Area. If I do, I'll be sure to report about it. I've cleared the first hurdle, which is to get an NRA membership.
Why on earth would a gun club REQUIRE NRA membership? It's not like belonging to the NRA makes you more responsible about or safer in regard to guns. (It does lead to subtle alterations in brain chemistry, but I hope that won't happen to you.)

I think the club is owned by the NRA. No changes yet in my brain chemistry, but then again, I'd probably be the last one to realize it.

Hmm, good point. We'll have to monitor you closely, then--for example, if you vote for Sarah Palin in 2012, we'll have to hit you with a stun gun, bundle you into an unmarked van, and take you out to our secret location 25 miles west of Pahrump for deprogramming. It'll be for your own good, of course.

Wait your going to take your liberal stun gun against his sarah Palin backed semi-auto.... do you realize he will be able to effectivly use one by then right?
Living in a southern state that has very free gun laws.. I take it that NV is fairly strict?... Like here theres not even a gun registry. People ask me all the time where they can go or what they do to register their guns and I say ".. you cant, no such thing"
Nevada has very good (liberal/loose) gun laws with two exceptions:
1) the state's preemption law does not apply to city/county ordinances that were enacted before a certain date. Thus, you have to register all handguns in Clark County and it is literally impossible to transport guns in any way shape or form in North Las Vegas without breaking their ordinance. NLV rarely enforces that law against anyone other than scrum, but it is on the books. You cannot transport at all. The Clark County registration thing only applies to residents and those staying longer than 30 days IRRC and you must carry it on you at all times if you have the gun to be in compliance. As is typical of registrations it is a burden that yields almost no return, although owners do get their stolen guns back a little more often.
2) The Nevada concealed carry permit requires that you list the semi-automatic firearms that you will be concealed carrying. There is no limit but you are a felon if you carry any other gun than the one you listed, which of course serves virtually no purpose. Buy a new gun? Wait until your new permit comes it with the listing. Listed gun lost or stolen? Welcome to waiting. Pointless stupidity. Nevada recognizes only a few out of state permits so that option is not very good. Word is that they will start accepting Arizona's permit, which is one of the easier ones to get.

If you are talking about the Desert Sportsman's Rifle club, it is not NRA owed. However, to be NRA affiliated a certain percentage of your club's members must be NRA members. NRA affiliation comes with a number of advantages, specifically the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and really cheap liability insurance. CMP is probably what the club is after. Being recognized and affiliated with the NRA allows members to buy surplus rifles and ammunition at about 50% of market rate from the CMP.
Wizard- you should take advantage of those perks if you do end up becoming a member at the sportsmans club. If you are trying to do practical handgun stuff you should try to get some range time at the Las Vegas Metro police range. I have done some classes there and it is top notch. Barring that, find a USPSA club near you.
Quote: FaceSad....I'm off for a free trip to Vegas in about eight days, and the only two things I'm getting excited about are a possible fishing trip on Lake Mead and the opportunity to delve into some fully automatic mayhem. I live in NY where simply uttering the phrase 'fully automatic' gets you put on a watchlist, so I'm definately going to look into what may be my only chance to take part in such pleasure. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! =)[/q
Forget about fishing Lake Mead, just forget it.

Does LV Metro offer beginner classes for handgun use?
Quote: JimMorrisonI think Metro has classes in murder, afterall that's what they are best at.
Why do you say this?

I am not sure. You would have to call them. I know their range is used by instructors to teach classes.
If you are just getting involved in handguns and have little experience look up an NRA instructor and take a basic handgun class. If you have handled guns before and are trying to improve skills I would probably recommend taking the CCW or handgun course at Frontsite. They seem like scammy salesmen, but their instructors are top notch once you cut through the SHAMWOW sales pitch. You will leave with a good understanding of the handgun as a tool.
