As a general term does it rise to the level of being offensive? I think context matters. I certainly can't ever recall using that term in a good way. It is basically on par with calling someone a donkey at the poker table. It basically means someone who doesn't know what they are doing when it comes to gambling or someone that might know, but they don't care. A ploppy is someone that would play a 6/5 jacks or better when there's a 9/6 open right next to them, or someone who would play 000 roulette even though a 00 is available.
What's offensive is the fact that Alan wants everyone else to act and talk like they are at some fancy dinner party with kings and queens.

Yes and no.
Is there a less offensive synonym of 'ploppy'? There are certainly more offensive synonyms.

Is it offensive to refer to someone as a fish?
Of course, it isn't very respectful. It is used in a derogatory term to describe someone or a group you think has inferior skills.
If it isn't offensive, show us by using it to compliment someone.
I don't think it rises to the level of fighting words, but would you call the 6-5 stranger with multiple tats and scars playing next to you a ploppie to his face?

I don't tend to use the term, "Ploppy," but I think whether or not it is strictly offensive depends on whether or not it is accurately descriptive.
For example, if I call a person a dog, then that is an extremely offensive insult, but if I call a dog a dog, then I am just calling the thing what it is.

I think it’s reasonable to say there are broadly speaking two categories of words: some words I wouldn’t say to someone’s face about them (donkey, ploppy, fish) but I’d still use in conversations with other people. And there are words I wouldn’t use either to someone’s face about them or in any other context. So when you’re determining what is “offensive”, I think the latter category certainly qualifies. The former category id say falls into the category of impolite/you’re a jerk to say to someone but I don’t think the word (donkey, ploppy) is in and of itself offensive.
If anyone gives you 10,000 to 1 on anything, you take it. If John Mellencamp ever wins an Oscar, I am going to be a very rich dude.

My definition is an unskilled casino player.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

My understanding was someone who plops down in a seat without prior thought or strategy for a game. Just play the game by intuition/guessing/feeling.
