Quote: vegasConnery died today at age 90. When I think of James Bond he is the one I think of. Hard to think he was 90 years old.
I can't even picture Sean Connery. I'm sure I saw im in the old James Bond role but I haven't seen those in 30 years.
I may have seen him in something more recently, but nothing is memorable.
That, and Casino (also Fear and Loathing in LV), are movies I usually watch at least parts of before, during, or after each Vegas trip. This trip I even got my wife to watch most of Fear and Loathing with me the other night while we were here in Vegas.
He put the game on the map as far as the general public was concerned.
Another great movie he did that is rarely seen is The Molly Maguires, a tale of a secret society in the 1890s, formed to fight oppressive mine owners in Pennsylvania.
So
The producers get Roger Moore as a replacement, who is older then Sean Connery

DAF gets a bad rap but it is my favorite Bond film. Isn't the guy at the water balloons Jay Sarno? I heard he got a cameo.
Who wouldn't want to stay at The Whyte House?
Quote: billryanI was never a big Bond fan, but loved him in The Man Who Would Be King. I have a poster from The Rock signed by Ed Harris,Nick Cage and Mr. Connery.

Connery was my Bond. We had a discussion about Yuengling on another board. I bring that up here because The Molly Maguires was about miners who sabotaged mines due to the terrible working conditions that existed. They were held in jail and executed in Pottsville, which is the home of the Yuengling brewery, about nine miles down the road from my home town.

Despite all the great Bond theme songs, "Diamonds are Forever" is my favorite of the Bond themes.

Maybe it has to do with the genre (Vegas) but I love Diamonds are Forever too. I've rewatched it probably more times than most Bond films, although...I really like On Her Majesty's Secret Service too, and think George Lazenby was a great Bond.
Jay Sarno played a side show barker in Diamonds, the scientist who introduces Zambora, the black girl who turns into a gorilla.
I understand that Sarno routinely acted as a real ringmaster at Circus Circus, which he developed and owned along with Caesar's.
Sarno at his desk in 1968.

When I saw the craps scene and understood what Connery, er, Bond was saying — full odds, hardway, all the numbers — I was quite pleased with my casino ken.

It was supposedly set in Vegas to get the American audience. Every few Bond movies they seemed to go back to the USA for this reason. I like it both for that and the ruthless Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd. The scene where they kill her yet take some pictures of the canals "for the children" well they do not make assassins like that anymore.

Thanks! I knew he played something IIRC it was both uncredited and a "sweetner" for using Circus!Circus! for filming.

Who is Shady Tree supposed to be a spoof of?
I never read the Diamonds book, but I understand there was character in it named Michael (Shady) Tree, a gangster, that had something to do with the New York end of the diamond smuggling operation. None of that New York story line was used for the movie.
- getting assignment, usually aggravating his boss
-flirting with money penny
-briefing on weapons with demonstrations
-meeting the “bond” girl
- usually at least two attempts on his life
- getting captured. doesn’t he always end up captured at some point.
- blowing s—- up.
- car chase
- romantic interlude / often with villain girl
- winning the day, usually killing the supervillain
-

You forgot the dialogue after 007 gets captured: "Before I kill you, Mr. Bond, let me tell you my plan…"
1. You only live twice
2. Goldfinger
3. Diamonds are forever
However, I'm in the Roger Moore generation. Not saying he is "better," but he is my Bond.

Which was the first Bond movie you remember? I think usually that determines it.

When I was between the ages of about 8 to 12 I would watch whatever Bond movie that came on TV, which were all Sean Connery ones. The three I liked best were the ones I just mentioned.
However, the first I saw in a theater I think was Moonraker. Since I got to the theater on my own and paid with my own money, I considered Moore to be my bond, where as Sean Connery was my father's Bond.

I remember it was a big event when Moonraker was the ABC Movie of the Night. (My family rarely saw movies in the theater.)
So Richard Kiel ("Jaws") was "my" Bond villain.
Quote: ddlomlI was always partial to “From Russia With Love”. The fight sequence between Bond (Connery) and the Robert Shaw character on the Orient Express train is riveting. It’s probably the least “over-the-top” Bond film that’s been made.
I just cannot watch the newer ones they seem so over the top. I tried watching "SPECTRE" but maybe I am also just getting to be one of those old guys who cannot get much into newer movies in general. But the newer Bonds just do not play to me. I think the last one I liked at all was "License to Kill." Hiding cocaine in gasoline is probably not realistic but it was not as over the top a a North Korean having plastic surgery to look like a Brit.

Yes! I never missed a Bond movie when they came on. Just loved the Bond theme at the beginning and always some kind of exciting beginning.
Yes, wasn't Jaws great!
Trivia time! Besides Jaws, what other villain henchmen changed sides? I can think of only one, I'll put in spoilers, but are there others?

I must be dreaming. Yes, the best name ever of a Bond villain ever. To be honest I forgot she switched sides. However, it's coming back to me...
Need to watch that one again. That movie had a such good slow pacing, unlike today.
Quote: redietzI was 14 when Diamonds are Forever made it into theaters. The shot of Jill St. John lounging on the couch (it was in the trailer, if you want to look) was all I needed to never forget.
Wow, you are older than I imagined. I pictured you as a 48 year old.
'From Russia With Love' has been my favorite along with Lazenby's 'On Her Majesty's SS'. I do like the Daniel Craig films, particularly SkyFall.
Has their ever been a movie franchise with better songs than Bond?

Often overlooked is actress Maud Adams character flip in "Man With The Golden Gun".
After stealing Scaramanga's sun gun key she gets a golden bullet to the heart, leaving her mannequin-like dead where Bond finds her at the Japanese Boxing matches.
Her theft and murder are offscreen which is perhaps why people forget her role.
Trivia, Maud Adams became the only female to play two main but different Bond characters when she later portrayed Octopussy (Is Octopussy a profanity?)

The actress is finally ready to talk about Harvey Weinstein.

I'm not sure if she would be considered a "henchman" (or "henchwoman?") since she didn't (that we know of) do any of Scaramanga's dirty work. Also, she was against Scaramanga from the beginning of the film when she sends Bond the gold bullet with his name number on it.Quote: darkozOften overlooked is actress Maud Adams character flip in "Man With The Golden Gun".

I'm not sure, but if you watch towards the end of the film when Louis Jourdan's character, Kamal Khan, is trying to reassure Octopussy that he really wasn't trying to vaporize her, he says her name twice. It really looks like he is trying to stifle a smile. Like even he can't say "Octopussy" with a straight face!Quote:Is Octopussy a profanity?

Besides being Scaramanga's lover, it is her character that does some of the transactions to obtain bullets if I remember correctly. Including doing a transfer at a gambling location where boxes are lowered to patrons on the floor (what's that all about?).
So I think that qualifies as doing some of the dirty work.
She did send the bullet but that just makes her flipping in advance of the story proper.
Imo she qualifies
