That's a weird movie, but good... even has R. Lee Ermey as a Drill Sergeant. First half or so is like a straight up Vietnam War movie. Then there's a big soccer game out of nowhere. Like they had two different scripts and had to jam them together to get one movie.
Some good sports documentaries: Pumping Iron, Pulling John, Bigger Faster Stronger... and I forget the name but a few years ago I saw a really good doc about the Miracle on Ice game told from the Russians point of view.
Football - Friday Night Lights (Remember the Titans would have been a better movie if it would have stuck to the real story more, but I guess nobody would be interested in a movie where every game but one early-season one was won in a blowout)
Basketball - On Hallowed Ground (I've heard a lot about Hoop Dreams - the movie that made AMPAS overhaul its documentary rules - but have never seen it)
Quote: ThatDonGuy(I've heard a lot about Hoop Dreams - the movie that made AMPAS overhaul its documentary rules - but have never seen it)
I started watching Hoop Dreams years ago but it was soooooo boring I couldn't even finish it. I think it's over three hours long.
Another good baseball movie is Mr. Baseball. Not sure if that's been mentioned yet.

I was going to mention Hoop Dreams. I saw it around the time it came out, so I barely remember it. But I thought it was really good at the time. I think Siskel and Ebert declared it the best film of the year.
It will be boring to some, for sure. It's a real documentary. It's just about these guys and their situation in life and stuff like that. It's a glimpse into someone else's reality, but it's not very Hollywood.

If you want to see the ultimate martial arts movie, watch “Enter the Dragon”. It established a genre that is still being used today (including Bloodsport/Lionheart). “The Karate Kid” (with Ralph Maccio and Pat Morita) is a distant second.
For a good under the radar movie, look for “Redbelt”. It’s a drama with the actor who was Tim “The Toolman” Taylor on the TV show “Home Improvement”.

I don't think it's technically a sport but those guys are definitely athletes.

Oh, aye. Remember "Cat's Pajamas"? 3-ish years old, remember watching it with pops after "Benny Hill" and "Tales from the Crypt". All sorts of old school karate movies, all night long.
But none have that sweet, sweet 80s cheese that Van Damme achieved.

Rollerball
You forgot to write (1975) after "Rollerball". That's very important. The original is one of my all time favorite movies, but the remake is disappointing trash that should have never been made.
I made a joke this week that this was only a minor penalty in "Rollerball". The movie happened to be on the same night that Golden Knights choked Game 7 after that bad major penalty call.
As for other sports, I generally like comedies, so...

Football: The Waterboy

Hehe... Does anyone really need to see Van Damme do the splits... again?
I love action flicks, but the films on this list should have a “sport” competition in them. There are thousands of avenging the death of someone martial arts films, but not all of them use a tournament as a key plot device.
Remember the “Fist Full of Yen” bit from “Kentucky Fried Movie”? That was some good stuff.

Hehe, Maybe because everyone is thinking of “The Big Lebowski” instead?

If the “sport” is fighting for your life, then how about the foreign film Hunger Games is based on, “Battle Royale”?

Wrestling is real, if you're talking about WWE brother
The Wrestler was a great movie.

As soon as I saw the title I thought, “North Dallas Forty”. GREAT sports film.
Also a shout out to a made for television film called The Jericho Mile..

The remake was so bad I actually forgot it existed. Totally agree.
Also Ayecarumba is correct Battle Royale should be on the list
also ""Big Fan" - story of a guy who's whole life is about being a New York Giants fan
Quote: MoscaAs soon as I saw the title I thought, “North Dallas Forty”. GREAT sports film.
I love it. It's a great rep representation of the NFL sex and drugs era. In case someone missed the obvious, they're supposed to be the Dallas Cowboys.
I still love the original Bad News Bears because, for one thing, it's actually a social criticism of Little League as a whole. Also, you have to love a movie that would be protested and maybe not even made today (that miserable remake doens't count) because it's so politically incorrect, I love how Tanner describes his own team which I'll say in PC mode to avoid being suspended:
Just a "bunch of people who believe in Judiasm, Hispanics, African Americans, boys who are less than masculine, and a developmentally delayed boy who likes to consume his own dried mucus."
Ther's a reason why you never see it on television- that and Walter Mathau drinking beer while driving with boys w/o seat belts and sitting on top of a convertible.
Quote: Linacruise1467I will pick The Cutting Edge, its my favorite movie so far.
I’ll Bot you do love that one.
Quote: DRichI think The Natural is my favorite sports movie and the most overrated was Rudy.
I just picked up a Rudy signed football. Won it at an auction. Neither the auction house nor I knew who it was, but it was an official football selling for $5. If nothing else, I could sell it to one of the guys with pitbull's at the dog park. It's amazing what a full grown pit can do to a football. Every parent should watch one in action before they decide to bring one into a home with kids. But I digress...
So I get home, run the number of the guys signature on ebay and up pops Rudy Ruttenger or however you spell his name. Sent out an email to five people who have bought ND stuff from me and it sold the same day for $35. As I'm shipping it, I find a crumbled up COA from some fly by night card store that no longer exists.
Rudy, the man and the movie, still seems to have a lot of fans. I watched it once, and it was okay. I have no desire to see it again.
I think The Natural is over-rated, although the last scene is phenomenal.

"Rocky" is my favorite sports movie. Its successful formula has been replicated, with varying degrees of success, in many different films.
