Quote: DJTeddyBearI prefer each of the downtown casinos, but for diffferent reasons.
What reasons?
otherwise GN
Quote: LovecompsWhich do you prefer and why?
The D: cons - really loud music in the casino.
- I always feel like they are on the verge of going out of business.
pros - cool retro coin dropper games on the second floor including Sigma Derby.
- The dealers are friendlier than the GN.
GN: cons - Strip quality, but Strip prices Downtown.
- high minimums, even when things are slow.
pros - pool has a shark tank with a slide.
- they actually have a giant golden nugget on display.
- best poker room downtown. However, they are almost the only poker room downtown, as the other option in Binions is just a sad couple of tables.
So... I guess it depends on who is footing the bill. If Im paying out of pocket, I would choose the D since it is cheaper.
Is this still true? I saw the "Hand of Faith" nugget last year in Biloxi of all places (at the GN there, of course). I thought it was a replica, but GN's own website confirms it is in Biloxi. Is there just a replica now at the GN downtown?Quote: Ayecarumbapros

The D has looser machines, better casual food, cleaner and newer rooms, and extremely polite and helpful staff in almost all cases (one surly pit boss, but I went over his head and got my bonus paid). Best comp return for the play I've found downtown.
Low room at the D a definite minus. Casino way too loud, plus FSE noise is incredible in those rooms. Above that level, not bad.

I thought I read somewhere that they revamped and this is no longer the case and Sigma Derby is gone. Can anybody confirm or deny?

Upscale. Or at least upscale for downtown.
Poker.
Shark tank.
The D:
High energy vibe.
Sigma Derby.
Golden Gate:
Old timey look & feel.
Downtown Grand:
Quiet.
California:
25¢ chips on craps - used to buy 4/10 for as low as $5.
Four Queens:
It seems like every $5 chip is different.
Main Street Station:
Great / cheap buffet.
Fremont:
I like it, but can't rememeber why.
---
Binions:
I haven't played there since the WoV poker game, I think in April, 2016.
Plaza:
I don't play there enough to have an opinion.

When I was there not to long ago, the Vegas casino had it. I can't think of why they'd go through the time, trouble, and risk of moving the thing.

Say it aint so Joe! I havent looked for the nugget display in several months.
Sigma was at the D a year ago. I would be sad if it is gone.
I saw it (or so I thought) when I was in Vegas in 2016. It was Mrs. Joeman's first trip to Vegas, and I thought she might appreciate seeing it, so we made a specific trip to the GN to see it. But this Vital Vegas article says that it has been in Biloxi since 2014!!Quote: AyecarumbaSay it aint so Joe! I havent looked for the nugget display in several months.
Was it a replica then? Is it a replica now? I just don't know what to believe any more! :P
Agreed! Is that the last one left? I played on one at the Montbleu (they actually had 2!) in Tahoe a few years back, but I hear those are gone now.Quote:Sigma was at the D a year ago. I would be sad if it is gone.
If I am going downtown, I want the other places...

Ahhck! It is a fake! The GN Las Vegas website confirms the original is in Mississippi.

Good news fake race fans! Sigma is still upstairs at the D. Ominously, it is currently under repairs. Please light a candle and think good thoughts for the quick return of the little fake horses.
If you see little bottles of glue in the gift shop, things did not go well for the ponies...
