If you always want to go to the store with the correct change from 1 to 99 cents, but want to carry the fewest coins possible, what is the number and type of coins needed?

(using only US pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters)

I figure some people already figured this out long ago. Heck, this may become archaic info not so long from now in electronic currency.

^ I agree
although your 7th coin can be 5 or 10c.
1 1 1 1 5 10 X 25 25 25 where X can be 5 or 10 - the first 7 coins get you 1 to 24 and the quarters cover the other parts to 99c (technically X=10 allows you to continue up to $1.04 so might be considered a superior answer). Also do they still do 50c coins like you used to see in Vegas, if so replace the 25 25 with a 50?
