So after a 7 year layoff, billryan re-emerged in may 2016. The timing of that is interesting because his first post of his re-emergence was to disparage a member that had just been banned.
So immediately after billryan's re-emergence post, Wizard posted the following:
This is interesting! Billy here created a whole bunch of accounts in 2009 and a few more in 2010. Then let them simmer for 6-7 years. Since they were all created with the same IP address, which it made it easy to link them all together. Here is a list of them: betbet, billryan, bthefox, burr804, cmcart19, crapzout, dna32wr, dougalou, dpieramico, hammersmoke, HTamburin, Jeffpatrick, jumbofrank, kmsea, leef3053, moneymaker, Mudbone, poppycarl, qkm1958, rgin94134, twilighter, waynemc7, yllib4.
Nice try Billy.
You will notice this is not an official quote as the thread is now closed, which doesn't allow me to make an official quote, but it is word for word what Wizard wrote on May 26, 2016 at 9:31pm.
So my question is why did the same multiple account banning that is standard, not apply to billryan? I mean 23 accounts?
Eat a few of these. It will help take the edge off.
Is this double standard fair to all those that have been nuked for multiple accounts? Are there rules or are there not rules?

Quote: RSI don't remember exactly what happened, but I recall something like there being something weird with the IP address that's common (like it belongs to a casino, an apartment complex, or used by Verizon or some sh**). And/or his IP wasn't even used but it was similar to the ones of the people that got banned, and he was banned on accident (or maybe that was djatc?).
I see. So just to be clear, you are saying, billryan created his account, and in Wizard's words "let it simmer for 7 years" before becoming an active member.
And that this is not related to the other 22 accounts also created in 2009 from the same IP address, that simmered for 7 years before Wizard identified them as linked. And that Wizard incorrectly identified them as linked.
I guess that is the ultimate definition of coincidence.

Interesting. I accept that. I guess I didn't read far enough into the thread. My apologies to billryan. I have never found billryan to be a troll, so reading Wizard's finding of 23 accounts linked more than surprised me.
I am just curious as to whether Wizard has considered this explanation of some of the other members that were banned for multiple accounts. Especially in Las Vegas. Would it not be unusual for a number of members to have Ip addresses from say downtown McDonalds, or downtown casinos, or even the public library?

What happened was pretty much that Mr. Wizard made a mistake , nuking me with a bunch of sock puppets. I never had multiple accounts. I had a couple people vouch for me and Mike reinstated me. I do appreciate your concern though.

Why don't you PM the Wizard and ask him. Much better than making false allegations and insulting a member under false pretenses.

My dog loves these. Just as cheap as a can of dog food and they smell better.

Wizard made the initial false allegation. I just read what he wrote and wondered and asked why. After a reasonable explanation, I accepted it and offered my apologies to billryan.

Why do I have a feeling, if we had this steak and dog food analyzed at a laboratory, the ingredients would be pretty close.

And good for you guys for getting some decent treats for your dogs. Those Chinese hard faux bones can kill a dog with whatever chemicals are in them.

They were 2 for $1 last summer for awhile.
They are always running out at Dollar Tree,
somebody buys them. Bets things at DT
are bottles of hot sauce, canned olives,
canned sardines, pork rinds.
So, I'm closing this thread.
I suggest that if members suspect another member of wrongdoing such as duplicate ID's that they take it to the mods by PM.

Wrong.
The issue in this particular case is a maildaemon on certain accounts that links to the node nearest them of a certain legacy email provider. We did not know about the problem at the time Wizard made that remark. But some IPs get funneled thru a common point that reflects back.
Other issues have included people signing on, especially initial sign-up, from some casinos or hotels via their wifi. Other users which have previously used that wifi sometimes reflect as common to that ip. We have to look at these things carefully before using ip to determine a sock.
Wizard and I both know HenryTamborin, an industry expert, for example. That is his account. We both also know billryan, now. That is his account. AFAICT, billryan is not, and does not have, any socks (and, yeah, i do check). He just used an email provider to sign up whose company passes through a common node.

Appreciate the apology. I was the one who looked into this in some depth at the time, and involved JB in backtracking the problem. So having it come up years later, with an accusation, was a surprise.
It's not unusual to have the wifi issue, as you suggest. We take a longer, monitoring view of these things, and don't just go on a simple ip crossover. There are other factors we look at. Would rather not get into it here, as we have enough sock problems, and Id prefer not to school them on what we can and can't determine.
